So I fired up Full Metal Schoolgirl expecting some goofy anime chaos and oh boy it did not disappoint from the second the title screen blasted that over-the-top guitar riff I knew I was in for a ride that probably didn’t believe in brakes or subtlety and I love that kind of energy because it’s like the game looked at Devil May Cry and said what if we added more caffeine and school uniforms and I’m not mad about it at all the first mission threw me into a shiny corporate tower full of evil salarymen robots who clearly need a vacation and a therapist and within two minutes I was juggling them mid-air with a chainsaw while heavy metal played and I thought yep this is peak Japan in the best possible way combat is basically third-person mayhem with guns and swords and the kind of camera that sometimes forgets you exist but that’s fine because you’re too busy launching enemies into walls and dodging lasers like a caffeinated ninja each floor you clear gives you upgrades that make you slightly less fragile and slightly more ridiculous and by the time you hit floor 20 you’re doing combos so flashy that even Bayonetta would take notes while sipping tea the roguelike element actually works better than I expected because dying doesn’t feel like failure it feels like a chance to come back stronger and maybe curse the evil corporation.

A little louder next run Akemi and Ryoko the two main girls are half-cyborg half-chaos and 100 percent attitude dropping one-liners so sharp they could slice through HR paperwork and honestly I’d hire them to handle my work emails any day the story is basically corporate Japan but make it dystopian anime satire and while it’s not exactly Shakespeare it hits hard if you’ve ever had a boss who emails you on weekends every enemy feels like a metaphor for burnout there’s literally a miniboss that throws staplers and another that fires emails as projectiles I laughed so hard I forgot to dodge and died instantly worth it though visually it’s a treat with neon lights metal corridors and more explosions than a Michael Bay internship and somehow it all runs smooth enough that my PC didn’t burst into flames which is always a win the soundtrack slaps like someone locked a metal band and a J-pop producer in a room until they made peace through shredding riffs and it works shockingly well now the gameplay loop is classic roguelike madness you fight climb upgrade die repeat and somehow that just one more run itch never goes away even when you swear you’re done at 3 AM the weapons are delightfully stupid in the best way like a laser katana that also doubles as a machine gun because why not and every time I unlock a new one I giggle like a kid on energy drinks there are rough edges of course some animations look like they were mocapped by a sleep-deprived intern.

Sometimes your dodge roll forgets to actually dodge but the chaos is so fun you barely care the bosses are huge angry and full of personality one of them is literally a giant fax machine that screams deadlines and I have never felt more seen or attacked at the same time performance wise it’s solid rarely any crashes and when there are it almost feels like part of the game’s rebellious attitude like oops guess the system couldn’t handle all that schoolgirl rage the upgrade system is deeper than it looks and you can build crazy loadouts that make you feel unstoppable until some random mid-boss deletes you in three hits and you question your life choices what surprised me most is how much personality the game has it’s self-aware enough to joke about anime tropes but not so meta that it becomes annoying it rides that perfect line of we know this is dumb but we love it the tower climbing structure keeps things moving and every ten floors you hit a checkpoint that feels like a reward from the heavens especially after dying fifty times to a coffee-addicted mech secretary I won’t lie it gets repetitive after a while especially if you’re grinding upgrades but the combat stays satisfying enough to keep you hooked even when your sanity starts negotiating the enemies evolve as you go higher and suddenly you’re fighting flying drones that look like office lamps and somehow they’re scarier than the bosses.
