IO Interactive was already a team that seemed to be doing pretty well with the iconic Hitman franchise becoming bigger and better than ever in recent years, and it seems like things are only ramping up from here. Getting the 007/James Bond license is no small feat for a dev team, and according to recent rumors and reports, a ton of resources were poured into the recently released 007 First Light.
Reviews have been very strong for the game, which currently sits at an impressive 88 aggregate overall on OpenCritic, good enough to be slotted into the Top 10 Best Reviewed Games of 2026 so far. But just what does this level of investment mean for the IOI and Bond partnership?
If the critical success as well as warm fan reception to this point are any indication, it seems we can expect IOI's massive investment in the IP and high-quality results are only good signs for fans of Britain's most famous spy in many years to come.
The Investment in 007 First Light was Massive
According to a Reddit post which sources and references news details from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, 007 First Light was developed over the course of seven years, and ended up costing a whopping 1.3 billion kroner (local Danish currency), which converts out to about $200 million USD.
A ton of resources were poured into the recently released 007 First Light.
Let's put that money into perspective. In 2006, Casino Royale was released, which kicked off the widely successful and critically-acclaimed Daniel Craig-era of the James Bond franchise. According to reports, Craig's debut film as 007 cost somewhere between $100m and $150m.
Sure, 2006 was a different time, and this provided range for Casino Royale's total budget is large, but even at the top end of reports, 007 First Light apparently cost at least $50m more than Casino Royale. Video games are expensive to make, especially ones at the scale of First Light, but this number is still pretty staggering nonetheless.
A Signal for Future Bond Titles
Odds are, we should expect to see more from IOI and Bond in the future. It would be shocking for a team to invest this much time and money into one single release without there being plans on the table for much more to come. IOI has said as much themselves, with the plans reportedly being for their 007 license to eventually result in at least a trilogy of games once it's all said and done.
What this also implies is that if First Light was already $200m to produce, we can likely expect any subsequent games from IOI to push things even further for this new, exciting slate of video games. First Light is already full of impressive visuals, high production value, and thrilling set pieces, so it will be very interesting to see what heights the games reach in the future as well.
For fans that have already blitzed through First Light and loved what they've experienced, this should all be exciting news. IOI is apparently positioned to go all-in on Bond, even beyond what the movie studios have invested in the past, so everything coming in the future for James Bond in the video game space seems to be very positive.
Here at DualShockers, our reviewer of 007 First Light, Christian Bognar, gave the game a very impressive 9 out of 10 overall. If the investment and quality continues to stay this high moving forward, consider us on board for more to come from IOI and Bond.
