The action-adventure genre has an endless number of games to play, but not all of them are good enough to warrant a second playthrough. A lot of games are a one-and-done experience, unfortunately, and are easily forgotten about once the credits roll. However, there are some amazing action adventure games out there with incredibly high replay value and are designed to keep you busy for hours on end.
In order for a game to have high replay value, it usually has additional content outside of the main quest, such as an extensive number of side quests, collectibles to find, hidden secrets, multiple paths with different outcomes, and more. On the other hand, some games offer such unique experiences that you can't find anywhere else, such as a co-op experience that creates memories, unique mechanics, or an incredible story that encourages someone to play the entire game again.

The Xbox One wasn't all bad and had plenty of games that kept you coming back for more.
After scouring through tons of action adventure games, there are 10 that stood out as titles that have the highest replay value. Each one of these titles is so fantastic that you can't help but pick up the controller and go in for a second (or third) helping. Here are the 10 best action adventure games with high replay value.
10 It Takes Two
Unforgettable Co-Op
Hazelight Studios is known for creating the best co-op experiences in the industry, and one of its greatest titles is 2021's It Takes Two. While nothing changes in a second playthrough of the game, the replay value lies in the enjoyment you’ll get from experiencing this adventure with a loved one. The laughs, emotional moments, and memories you create with your co-op buddy on the first playthrough will make you want to play through it all again.
I was lucky enough to get my fiancé to play through It Takes Two, and it’s a time that was so special to me. On the second playthrough, I played with my brother, and since our relationship dynamic is so different, playing the game a second time felt completely unique from my first playthrough. In other words, finding a different co-op buddy to play through It Takes Two a second time can lead to a different experience overall. You can even try to complete objectives you skipped on the first run, or discover hidden secrets you may have missed.
9 Devil May Cry 5
Addictive Action
Devil May Cry 5 is a game with high replay value due to its scoring system in combat encounters. As players fight through hordes of enemies, they can pull off incredible attack combos that rack up points. The longer your streak of combos is and the deadlier they are, the higher your overall score will be. This addictive mechanic creates high replay value as it leads to an endless loop of attempting to beat your high score by mastering the combat system. New Game Plus can be done on greater difficulties, too, adding a new layer of challenge.
In addition to that, Devil May Cry 5 has a game mode called The Bloody Palace, which is similar to horde modes from other games. The challenge is to rise through the floors of the palace, fighting waves of enemies as you climb, and aiming to get the highest score possible. The farther you progress through the palace, the harder it becomes, and enemies become more aggressive and deadlier. Overcoming the Bloody Palace is no easy feat and will take many hours to master.
8 God of War: Ragnarök
Biggest God of War Yet
God of War: Ragnarok’s replay value stems from the amount of side content in the game. There’s a ton of side quests, favors, secret bosses, and hidden locations to explore, all of which you most likely won’t complete in one playthrough. Since GOW: Ragnarök offers a new game plus mode, you can tackle all these objectives in a second playthrough with a fully upgraded Kratos and Atreus. NG+ even adds new armor, higher level caps, and more challenging mini-bosses. With the addition of the Valhalla DLC, which is a roguelike mode with randomly generated content, the game has even higher replay value than it did at launch.

Also, God of War: Ragnarok is simply great to replay due to the incredible story it tells. Sony has always been the king of stories in video games, and Kratos’ latest adventure is proof of that. Experiencing the story on a second playthrough will help you pick up on stuff you may have missed on the first run, allowing you to get a better understanding of any hidden meanings, secret lore, and the overall plot. Just talking about God of War: Ragnarok right now is making me want to replay it.
7 Hitman 3
Multiple Ways to Kill
If you aren’t familiar with the Hitman series, it’s all about stealth and assassinating enemies in unique ways. Hitman 3 is arguably the biggest sandbox in the series and offers more ways to kill compared to other entries. This means it has a ton of replay value, as players can test out new ways to go about missions, trying to figure out the most clever way to take out their targets. Just when you think you have exhausted all ways to assassinate someone, you’ll discover a new way to go about it.
Additionally, Hitman 3 offers a roguelike mode called Freelancer, which involves randomly generated missions. Each mission feels unique, and you never know how a round of Freelancer is going to turn out. Due to its randomness, fans can play through this mode for hours on end without it ever growing stale. The more you play, the better you’ll get at coming up with clever ways to kill and becoming the best hitman you can be.
6 Resident Evil 2
One of the Best Horror Remakes
While all Resident Evil games have high replay value, the Resident Evil 2 remake stands out as the one that has the most. Unlike other entries in the franchise, Resident Evil 2 offers two different campaigns, one where you play as Claire and the other where you play as Leon. While the campaigns are similar to one another, they are different enough and offer unique story beats that warrant playing through both of them. Both Clair and Leon's stories have unique levels, missions, and characters you meet along the way.
Additionally, Resident Evil 2 gives a letter ranking upon completing the story. This rank is determined by the number of times you use Heal Sprays, how fast you complete the entire story, and the number of times you save your game at a typewriter. This adds replay value to the game as die-hard fans of the series will attempt to get the best score possible, which is not an easy task. Besides that, Resident Evil 2 is also simply one of the best survival horror remakes of all time, which is another excuse to play through the game again and again.
5 Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Brutal and Challenging Combat
The best part of FromSoftware’s games is mastering the combat, and that is especially true in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Unlike Dark Souls and Elden, Sekiro focuses on a parry-heavy combat system that is easy to understand but incredibly difficult to master. It’s because of this high skill ceiling that encourages players to do second playthroughs, to hone their skills even further, and to become the ultimate Shinobi.

These games are addicting and it's tough to stop playing them.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice offers a New Game Plus mode that allows players to carry over most of their skills, items, and upgrades. Enemies are much harder in NG+, getting higher health pools and dealing more damage, putting the player’s skills to the ultimate test. Also, in classic FromSoftware fashion, there are tons of secrets to discover that you most likely will miss on the first playthrough, making it necessary to play a second.
4 Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
The Nemisis System is a Standout
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor has strong replayability due to its unique Nemisis System. This unique mechanic creates dynamic enemies with evolving personalities based on your decisions and actions throughout your playthrough. For example, an Orc grunt could kill you in combat, and then that same Orc will end up becoming captain and mention in dialogue how he was successful in killing you. Everything has cause and effect, and the game randomizes this for everyone, ensuring that no playthrough feels similar. Going into a second playthrough and playing completely differently, such as making different decisions, will make the entire game feel fresh.
There's nothing quite like Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemisis System and it still stands as one of the best and most original mechanics in video game history. It was revolutionary for its time, so much so that the game went on to win multiple Game of the Year awards from various outlets around the world. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. patented the Nemisis System, which is still in effect today, making it almost impossible to find anything similar in other games (except its sequel). That's okay, though, because Middle Earth still holds up graphically by modern standards.
3 Dishonored
Dishonored is known for its high replay value due to the many different routes players can take to beat a level. Not only can you switch up a route on a second playthrough, but you can also completely change your playstyle, making for a fresh experience. For example, you can focus on utilizing stealth during one playthrough and magic on the next. The deep customization toward character builds allows for experimentation, making each subsequent playthrough feel unique.

These games have such immersive universes that the optional content ends up being just as good as the main campaign.
Additionally, Dishonored offers two main endings with multiple branching narratives, which are decided based on your “Chaos” level. Since your Chaos level is determined by the number of kills you get during the story, you may have one playthrough that consists of killing no one, while the other one focuses on killing every enemy in sight. In other words, how you decide to act throughout the story will result in a unique ending and narrative beat. This makes Dishonored extremely fun to play multiple times, as you aim to earn both endings.
2 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The sequel to the genre-defining open world action adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, improved upon the original in every way possible. Not only is Tears of the Kingdom bigger in scope, having more content to complete, but it also has better systems in place that add replay value to the product. For example, its physics-based mechanics allow players to combine almost all objects in the game to create unique contraptions such as vehicles, planes, and complex machines. If you can think of it, the game allows you to make it with the Fuse and Ultrahand abilities.
This mechanic alone adds tons of replay value to the game, as it allows players to experiment in really fun ways. Outside of that, Tears of the Kingdom has an endless amount of optional content to complete, such as hundreds of shrines with rewards, side quests that can take hours to finish, and hidden areas that can be tricky to find. It's unlikely that a player will finish everything the game has to offer in one playthrough, making it essential to play through the game again. It's also just exciting to explore Hyrule and live in its world.
1 Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight: Silksong can be described as the Elden Ring of metroidvanias due to its sheer size within its genre. There are so many hidden secrets, quests, locations, and bosses to find throughout an insanely large map that you’re bound to miss something on a first playthrough, even if you’re extremely thorough. This makes the game have a ton of replay value, especially for completionists who are looking to complete a 100% playthrough where nothing is left untouched.
Besides going on the hunt to discover everything Silksong has to offer, a ton of replay value can be found in its combat system. There are tons of character builds to try out as the game is loaded with different tools, crests, and skills, allowing players to experiment and create unique combinations. This can make a second playthrough feel completely different since combat will feel fresh as you’ll have new forms of attacks and have to utilize new strategies. It was a long wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong, but the wait was worth it as Team Cherry has delivered a game that we will be playing for years to come.
