In just six months, we have already enjoyed adventures whose caliber easily makes them candidates for Game of the Year despite being indies.

Across all genres, audiovisual styles, and creative approaches, developers worldwide made giant strides in the evolution of the interactive medium, gifting us with works whose influence is still palpable.

Whether due to their contextual significance or their timeless quality, many of these masterpieces remain relevant today, so much so that they arguably still reign supreme in their respective fields.

Therefore, in order to recognize these unique experiences that seem to have yet to find any equal, I invite you to explore this list of ten classic 2000s games that haven't been surpassed.

10 Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3

Arena for the Nostalgic

Arena fighting games have become an increasingly neglected subgenre over time in favor of a more traditional approach, which has allowed Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 to remain a title that's always worth revisiting.

Despite receiving a recent and excellent successor, it's a product of an era with different priorities, such as extreme competitiveness and meta-based online play, which practically disregards the nuances that characterized the IP.

The nostalgia factor inevitably plays a key role in its appeal, though Budokai Tenkaichi 3 remains the one with the most varied game modes and refined controls, alongside a roster of characters that is absolutely staggering even by today's standards.

It's not so difficult to stay at the top of the pyramid when you have so few competitors, but the achievements of a title that, almost 20 years later, continues to ignite the most passion among anime fans shouldn't be underestimated.

9 Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Speeds Unattainable for Today

Since the racing genre shifted almost entirely towards simulation, street racing and arcade-style gameplay have become a thing of the past, making it even more certain that Need for Speed: Most Wanted remains king.

Years go by, and despite numerous attempts by its creators and other developers from around the world to replicate this masterpiece's aura, the pursuit of the Blacklist remains the most adrenaline-pumping of them all.

The stars aligned to create a racing game whose vibe is impossible to surpass, combining a splendid sense of speed, vehicles with deep mechanical and aesthetic customization, a perfect soundtrack from start to finish, and an excuse to race that actually encouraged you to become the ultimate street racer.

With an iconic campaign, an unforgettable atmosphere, and a name synonymous with millions of childhoods, Need for Speed: Most Wanted is still waiting for a worthy successor, and nothing suggests that one will arrive anytime soon.

8 Mirror's Edge

Platforming Immersiveness

By mere theory, students are always destined to surpass the master, yet the axiom never specifies how long it takes for this to become reality, which explains why Mirror's Edge has so many students and none better than it.

10 Best JRPGs of the 2000s

The new millennium was a period of major evolution for the JRPG genre.

Although it created a school within the platforming genre, popularizing the use of first-person perspective in immersive environments and parkour-like gameplay, Faith continues to run alone across City of Glass' rooftops.

Few video games have attempted to emulate its success, subconsciously acknowledging that it's impossible to surpass it, as reaching the same level of mechanical, aesthetic, and rhythmic prestige seems only within the reach of an industrial quantity of talent and a touch of magic.

There are Mirror's Edge devotees in post-apocalyptic open worlds, linear arcade campaigns, cyberpunk dystopias with ninjas, and other fresh and abundant ecosystems, though they all continue to pay homage to the true queen of platforming.

7 BioShock

BioShock

BioShock is among the century's most influential video games in so many ways that it would take an entire post to list them all, but even so, it hasn't been possible to dethrone Rapture from the top of the food chain.

While Irrational Games' work is a direct product of their experience with System Shock, both titles coexist in different spaces, with the most recent one advocating for a linear and traditionally cinematic campaign that is simply mind-blowing.

The combination of FPS mechanics and magic with hints of horror and exploration, enveloped in the unforgettable atmosphere of an underwater dystopia that tells its stories with every step you take, resulted in a memorable journey that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who plays it.

Add to that the generational impact it had by establishing environmental storytelling through audio notes and the scenarios themselves, the presence of one of the most iconic antagonists in history, and a truly impressive meta-message about video games, and BioShock rises above all its peers.

6 World of Warcraft

Synonym for MMORPG

Ghosts around a graveyard in World of Warcraft

More than just a video game, World of Warcraft is a global cultural phenomenon that transformed both the video game industry and the lives of millions, establishing itself as an integral part of the interactive medium's identity.

The title has sustained the MMORPG genre for two consecutive decades, even through its numerous stumbles, offering a world whose sheer scale, in terms of maps, lore, quests, characters, stories, gameplay options, enemies, raids, and more, remains completely unmatched.

Massively multiplayer online games have had impressive representatives over the years, though none have ever come close to achieving World of Warcraft's legendary status, capable of bringing the world to a standstill during its heyday.

Try as I might, I have never again experienced the same sense of immersion, adventure, and awe I felt when I played World of Warcraft, and being such a historical product, the circumstances for that to happen may never arise again.

5 Max Payne

Leader of a Genre with Few Variations

Max Payne Shotgunning Enemy

Another genre that hasn't progressed as much as I'd like is third-person shooters, which saw advancements during the consoles' seventh generation with franchises like Gears of War and Uncharted, but ultimately still bows down to Max Payne.

The cover mechanics and cinematic cutscenes are great, but they can do little to compete with the immeasurable stylization of the comic book-style panels and the acrobatic, slow-motion gunplay we experience on the coldest night in New York.

With a captivating story, iconic voice acting, and a constant subversion of expectations, Max Payne constantly shifts direction, drawing you into a spectacular spiral of madness and revenge that is utterly intoxicating.

Without needing hundreds of weapons, thousands of enemies, or cutting-edge technology, Remedy crafted a game with a magnetic presence that leaves you completely mesmerized by its inventiveness and ambiance.

4 Silent Hill 2

A Piercing and Unparalleled Terror

Silent Hill 2

These past few days, I've been reminiscing about the explosion of horror masterpieces we saw at the century's beginning, precisely because of the genre's remarkable current state, though I still believe Silent Hill 2 stays unbeaten.

These 10 Xbox 360 era adventure titles allowed people to become villains or start as villains right from the get-go.

Even considering its remake, the advancements the genre has made, and the wide variety of independent titles that have added more substance to it, nothing remotely comes close to the incredible psychological descent we experienced alongside James Sunderland.

The way Team Silent navigated the era's limitations to create a story that's piercing from its aesthetics to its atmosphere, brimming with symbolism and metaphors that build a singular legend, is truly worthy of eternal praise.

It's difficult to explore its excellence further without venturing into spoiler territory, but let it be clear, Silent Hill 2 is a time-ignoring nightmare that continues to govern the psyches of the genre's fans.

3 Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening

A Stylization Without Precedent or Successors

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

Speaking of dead genres, hack and slash games experienced an impressive golden age where every title was a masterpiece, as is the case with Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening.

After a deplorable sequel that could easily have killed any franchise, Capcom made a 180° turn, transforming a tragic entry into a heavenly creation of action and spectacle with enough personality to generate a cult following.

And indeed, time gathered an untold number of fans around the god of bad jokes, unpaid debts, and the most impressively choreographed combat, battling superbly designed enemies, both in terms of gameplay and visuals, all accompanied by an exhilarating soundtrack that puts you in a trance.

Every boss, level, song, weapon, line of dialogue, and encounter with Vergil is far beyond what we've seen in the last 20 years in terms of charisma and identity, so Devil May Cry 3 continues to eat pizza comfortably on its throne, unafraid of being displaced.

Ahead of Its Time Like No Other

Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty

Although there have been better tactical stealth games if we consider only gameplay, the difference between Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and the vast majority of the video game industry is measured in light years.

As I described with World of Warcraft, Hideo Kojima's creation achieves such an impact that it transcends the interactive medium, establishing itself as a magnificent human creation for its critical and reflective qualities regarding issues that, in an almost oracular way, it warned about: freedom of expression, the internet, and artificial intelligence.

The incredible thing is that it's a fun title, with iconic boss fights, great level design, and a campaign with outstanding characters and writing, making it an extraordinary game that acquires a mythical condition when we consider its thought-provoking nature.

That ability to induce reflection, to make us stop and think about our relationship with video games and ways of interacting with art, is what has made Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty not be surpassed, but rather become more legendary each year.

1 Half-Life 2

Valve Remains Undefeated

Valve decided to abandon its specific focus on single-player games to fully embrace Steam's supremacy and multiplayer experiences, but before doing so, it gifted us one of the most revolutionary, essential, and unparalleled titles in history: Half-Life 2.

While FPS games have branched out in all sorts of ways, none of their variations have been able to match the physics-based mastery of Gordon Freeman's second adventure, whose unresolved cliffhanger stands as the most agonizing in video game history.

The natural way the game guides us through City 17 as the story unfolds in real time, along with emergent gameplay and perfectly executed hip-fire gunplay, makes you feel like you're really under the Covenant's thumb, oscillating between shooting, puzzles, platforming, and horror.

This ability to constantly vary gameplay sequences, never getting stuck on a single idea but perpetually transforming what you have to do and how you do it, boasts a level of quality and depth no other FPS has ever dared to attempt.

Most focus on shooting, melee combat, or movement, though Half-Life 2 embraces every possible feature a video game could have and refines them to their absolute limit; a boldness that, historically, seems to have been reserved only for Valve.
