Pragmata is a game that we admittedly can't put down. This Capcom hit comes after the success of Resident Evil Requiem, and has given the development studio another massive IP to work with.
If you are like us and haven't been able to get over how great the relationship between Hugh and Diana is, but have played the game to death, it might be time to try something new.
10 Best Linear Games That Feel Open World
Sometimes, the illusion of open-ended design is enough.
Rather than focus on games that play similarly to Pragmata, we went on the search for games with a similar story. A story that will show you the bond between a parent and child, or give you the role of a guardian.
10 Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
Keeping Each Other Safe
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons helps fill that emotional gap created by Hugh and Diana's story. Instead of playing as a father, you play as two brothers (hence the name). They journey across a fantasy land in search of a cure for their father's illness.
Along the way, you witness beautiful moments where the brothers help each other and protect one another from danger. The single-player co-op-style gameplay is also unique, allowing you to control two characters at once.
If you want a game that brings out your love for adventuring and gives you that emotional story of protection, Brothers is definitely one to try out.
9 The Walking Dead: Season 1
Apocalyptic Dad Role
If it is that father/daughter style relationship you are craving, and you want something other than Pragmata, you should try out Telltale's The Walking Dead. Specifically, season one is where you will find the most compelling story.
Season one follows the story of Lee Everett, a convicted criminal who gets a second chance after the squad car he is in crashes and is attacked by zombies. He later meets Clementine, a small girl who offers Lee a bit of redemption in this post-apocalyptic world.
The first season is known for its heart-wrenching story, and many have fallen in love with the relationship between Lee and Clementine.
8 Resident Evil: Revelations 2
Barry is Back
Resident Evil Revelations 2: Episode 4
Barry is everyone's spiritual papa in Resident Evil. He has been there since the beginning, and gets a primary role in Resident Evil Revelations 2, by both searching for his seemingly dead daughter and rescuing another little girl.
The story first puts you in the shoes of Claire Redfield and Moira, Barry's daughter, as they are trapped on an island controlled by Alex Wesker. After Claire makes it home and Moira doesn't, Barry sets out on a trip to rescue his daughter.
During his journey, Barry runs into Natalia, taking her under his wing and protecting her. Meanwhile, he goes in to save his daughter from Alex Wesker, in true family man fashion.
7 Bioshock
Save the Little Sisters
If you want the sensation of being a savior, look no further than the game Bioshock. After going down in a plane, you find yourself in the city of Rapture — a massive underwater establishment.
Here, you will see many strange sights, with one of them being the Big Daddies and Little Sisters. As you progress through the game, you run into many Little Sisters, and you can use your abilities to either harvest or save them.
If you decide to save the Little Sisters, you will ultimately get the good ending to Bioshock, where you and the girls escape from Rapture. You then all go on to lead normal lives.
6 A Plague Tale: Innocence
Protect Your Little Brother
Instead of taking on the role of a father, in A Plague Tale, you take on the role of Amicia De Rune, the older sister of Hugo. Although the father role isn't there, you still play the parental role, caring for someone who is in need of your help.
The story follows the pair as they try to survive the plague and the massive swarms of rats along with it. The pair is pursued by the Inquisition, who will stop at nothing to capture Hugo, making your role as the protector all the more important.
There are two games in the series, with the first being A Plague Tale: Innocence, and the second being A Plague Tale: Requiem. Both are fantastic journeys that capture that emotional parental bond.
5 Death Stranding
Baby in a Pod
Death Stranding is perhaps one of the more interesting games that has come out in the last decade. You play as a porter — delivery personnel tasked with delivering supplies across the devastated world.
Along the way, you are given a BB, or Bridge Baby, that allows you to sense BTs. While not the typical parental storyline, you do feel a connection with the child you are carrying, as it aids you throughout your journey.
The sci-fi setting also helps sell the similarity to Pragmata, allowing you to play a game in a similar world, even if the parental relationship is a bit strange.
4 Fallout 4
Your Son is Out There
Bethesda has a knack for crafting stories in the Fallout franchise that involve Vault-Dweller family drama. In Fallout 4, however, you specifically choose whether to play as the mother or father of baby Shaun.
After the bombs fall, you and your spouse are forced into cryo chambers with your child, who is then kidnapped during your time in stasis. You wake up briefly to watch the kidnapper shoot your spouse and run off with your child.
You then wake up, ready to journey across the wasteland to find your son. Another story about a parental bond, but one that will have you making many critical decisions that will shape the wasteland.
3 The Witch 3: Wild Hunt
Searching for Your Daughter
Geralt of Rivia is one of gaming's most recognizable characters. After all, he has been in three Witcher titles, and each one has caught the eye of a massive fanbase. The third title drew in the most people thanks to its massive open world, fun combat, and great narrative.
The Witcher 3 focuses on Geralt's relationship with his adopted daughter Ciri, who is being hunted by the Wild Hunt. As she flees the Wild Hunt, Geralt must track her down, leading you on a grand journey.
This game is defined by many narrative interactions, but none more than the father/daughter bond between Geralt and Ciri, making it a perfect fit for those who want another parental-focused story like Pragmata.
2 God of War (2018)
The Return of Kratos
The Last of Us may have started the craze of the "dad game," but the 2018 God of War title continued it with the story of Kratos and his son Atreus. This title begins with Kratos and Atreus journeying to the highest peak of the Nine Realms to spread Kratos' wife's ashes.
Along the way, Kratos mentors his son, preparing him for life, all while trying to hide who he truly is. This is yet another title where you are thrust into the parental role, though it doesn't quite hit the same note as Pragmata.
Despite the tone being a bit harsher and Kratos not being the world's greatest father, the story still has plenty of emotional weight that is sure to continue your love for the "dad game" sub-genre.
1 The Last of Us: Part 1
Joel and Ellie
While the role of a parental figure existed in games before The Last of Us, it was this series that really set the stage for what is termed as "dad games." The title focuses on Joel and the downfall of humanity, as a disease takes control, throwing the world into an apocalypse.
Joel meets Ellie and the pair get emotionally attached, leading Joel to treat Ellie as the daughter he lost at the beginning of the story. This title captures most of what you experience in Pragmata, which is the bond between a father and daughter.
While the second title in the series isn't as emotionally involved between Joel and Ellie, the pair are still together, and Joel is still ever the father figure, trying to hold on to Ellie as best he can.
