10 Great Dreamcast Games That Are Immediately Fun

2 hours ago 2

Dreamcast is among the consoles that guaranteed the most pure entertainment for people of my generation, especially considering the era of technological and creative advancements during which it was released.

Each new game seemed unique, ideas were overflowing, and the interactive industry was still young enough that any concept felt groundbreaking, which led to countless incredible works.

These games brought everybody 'round for a bit of Dreamcastin'.

Someone might say I'm speaking from nostalgia, and that's probably a factor, but I'm sure there's no bias in stating that the beginning of this century gave us numerous adventures that still hold up great even today.

Therefore, since it's never a bad time to celebrate the history of interactive media and explore it in depth, I invite you to discover the entries on this list of ten great Dreamcast games that are fun from the start.

10 Metropolis Street Racer

The Underrated King of Racing

Metropolis Street Racer

For how incredibly outstanding it was, I'm surprised by how little Metropolis Street Racing is talked about, a racing game whose elegance and style were extremely high for its time.

Through its Kudos system, striving for mechanical perfection behind the wheel was satisfying from the very first moment, especially since the controls and gameplay were perfect for demanding that level of mastery.

While not necessarily a realistic simulator, but also not adhering strictly to the arcade style, Metropolis Street Racing found a middle ground that hooked you instantly, particularly as you unlocked more and more cars and tracks.

As the spiritual predecessor to Project Gotham Racing, I think it's fair to say it was ahead of its time, though I believe the passage of time has put it in its rightful place, at least among those familiar with the genre.

9 Alient Front Online

War Against Humanity

Alien Front Online

The aliens-versus-humans trope has been a staple of modern culture for a long time, but in the world of video games, virtually none have managed to achieve what Alien Front Online did.

Although I was never able to play it online due to connection limitations, which I think would have made me speak even more highly of it, the single-player missions were more than enough to captivate me with their spectacular warfare.

Regardless of the side you chose, taking over any of the vehicles to wage wars of such scale was breathtaking, with powerful audiovisual effects, magnificent environments, and a strong differentiation between vehicles that truly sustained its replayability.

Seeing metal constructs fly through the air is a familiar spectacle, but one I'll never get tired of, and while Alien Front Online wasn't groundbreaking, it was so simple and fun that it was impossible not to enjoy every second of it.

8 Maximum Pool

Immaculate Vibes

Maximum Pool

Since my father is a huge pool fan, we not only had a table and played practically every week, but we even shared the sport through the magnificent Maximum Pool.

With a relaxing yet addictive soundtrack you could listen to for hours without getting tired of it, numerous game modes to delight connoisseurs of the sport, and an effective mechanic that perfectly captured the real experience, it was a truly perfect game.

Although pool has taken a backseat in terms of video game representation, with most titles being Flash games, Maximum Pool took the sport seriously and gifted those of us who are fans with a terrific title.

Besides, if you don't like pool, this game can have one of two effects: it can either make you like it and want to play it in real life, or at least entice you enough to keep playing.

7 Mortal Kombat Gold

Visceral Pleasure

Mortal Kombat Gold

Your first Mortal Kombat game is the most unforgettable because of how easily it leaves a strong impression, and in my case, that was Mortal Kombat Gold.

It wasn't the most successful console, but its games still have some value.

Being the first game in the franchise to appear on a sixth-generation console, the graphical and gameplay differences compared to its predecessors were noticeable, offering an even more addictive and visceral combat experience.

Having 20 characters with such distinct aesthetics and moves was more than enough to captivate me from the very first match, and even more so when I was challenging my friends or getting hooked on the Tower until I unlocked every last bit of content.

Amazing moves, great cinematography, unparalleled audiovisual effects… Mortal Kombat Gold was among the best in the genre for quite some time, and a virtually endless source of entertainment for my younger self.

6 Confidential Mission

A Perfectly Adapted Arcade

Confidential Mission

One of my favorite experiences during the Dreamcast era was comparing how games looked on consoles versus their arcade versions, and among the standouts in its adaptation was always Confidential Mission.

Even without the light gun, playing as agents Howard Gibson and Jean Clifford was a phenomenal power fantasy, taking you to exotic locations to face intimidating enemies with a constant feeling that you could die at any moment.

It was a demanding shooter, with sequences practically lifted from action thrillers, and bosses that really required a level of precision and awareness that even many games in the genre today struggle to achieve.

It was extremely short, though, but part of Confidential Mission's fun is replaying it and trying to beat your own high scores, something that's much more enjoyable when played with a friend, competing to see who has the finest aim.

5 Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X

The Most Vivid Zombie Terror

Resident Evil - Code Veronica-2
Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X

The number of traumas Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X inflicted on me is, I think, only matched by the sheer amount of fun I had playing it, as it was an extraordinary survival horror game.

Anyone who thinks it's the series' best game is perfectly entitled to their opinion without being judged as a madman. On the contrary, I think many would agree it's among the best expressions of the series' formula.

Dynamic camera angles, intriguing story, top-notch graphics for the time, gothic aesthetic, challenging resource management, creative puzzles… Think of everything that characterizes Resident Evil, and you'll find pure excellence in this title.

I have to admit it takes a little longer than the other games on this list to really click, but even so, its fun factor reaches such high peaks that I find it impossible to make an article like this without including it.

4 Jet Set Radio

Stylization Made Video Game

As one of the most acclaimed games in Dreamcast history, I can say with complete certainty that Jet Set Radio embodies the word 'unique' like few other titles in the history of this industry.

From its gameplay focused on movement, platforming, graffiti, and style, to its distinctive cel-shaded aesthetic and gorgeously crafted music, it's a title that captivates you from every angle, awakening an affinity for art you didn't even know you possessed.

Whether you were mesmerized by the character and level designs, captivated by the soundtrack, or simply enjoying the exhilarating experience of tagging the city, Jet Set Radio must hold some kind of record for how quickly it convinces you of its brilliance.

Years go by, and despite attempts to replicate what Smilebit did in the 2000s, there are two irrefutable truths: the game has not been surpassed, and frankly, it hasn't needed to be because it still holds up beautifully even today.

3 Crazy Taxi

Madness at Full Speed

Crazy Taxi gameplay

When it comes to pure fun, I think you can count on one hand (and still have fingers to spare) the number of games that are as entertaining as, or even more entertaining than, Crazy Taxi.

These Dreamcast games are always good for one more round.

The game demonstrates the power of a well-chosen premise, and the idea of being a taxi driver trying to achieve impossible times at the expense of the road safety of dozens of pedestrians is simply brilliant.

Of course, the game's visual and sound design shouldn't be underestimated; they're magnificently crafted to complement the absurdity of its world. Regardless, the fun it delivers from the very first moment begins and ends with its arcade gameplay, worthy of being enjoyed for as many hours as possible.

Like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi is one of those games that is very much of its time, so trying to replicate it is pointless, as it's simply a product that can't age. In fact, if I had to choose one, I'd say it just keeps getting better.

2 The House of the Dead 2

A Cooperative Without Parallels

House of the Dead 2 Judgement boss

If you take everything I praised about Confidential Mission, add a theme as captivating as zombies, and include several of the most challenging yet enjoyable boss fights, you get The House of the Dead 2, an icon of light gun shooters.

The sheer variety of environments, enemies, and on-rails combat in this arcade game is one of the most exciting experiences I had on the Dreamcast, which is saying something considering the number of masterpieces the console boasted.

Playing this game with friends was fantastic simply for the challenging goal of completing it, but once you reached the credits, all you wanted was to keep reveling in its wonderful action.

Along with its impressive technical aspects and countless scares, The House of the Dead 2 is an incredibly immersive experience everyone can and should enjoy, as it's among the most amusing games in history.

1 Sonic Adventure 2

The Peak of the Blue Hedgehog

sonic in the city escape level

While I can't call myself a die-hard Sonic fan, I can certainly champion, however unnecessary it may seem, Sonic Adventure 2 as a monumental work for those of us who owned a SEGA console.

Whether you immersed yourself in its vibrant and varied campaign, with its numerous characters, stages, mechanics, and gameplay approaches that imbued it with dynamism, or in its multiplayer mode, designed to provide endless entertainment for you and your friends, it was impossible to get bored playing this game.

The exhilarating sense of speed, coupled with a soundtrack perfectly suited to every situation, offered a type of entertainment so unique and satisfying that it was difficult to find in other titles, even within the same series.

And I say this fully aware of the game's generally low rating, and even its partially accepted status as inferior to its predecessor, because I genuinely believe it has been unfairly maligned.

In any case, when it comes to fun, Sonic Adventure 2 is a phenomenal choice, and my personal favorite from the entire Dreamcast era. Years go by, and I still enjoy replaying it as much as ever, and that says more than anything I can say.
