You may have the platinum trophy in the game, and yet these encounters will cost you more than you expect.

Explaining this reality involves the typical praise for its perfect controls, memorable bosses, stunning audiovisual presentation, and amazing level design, but there's a crucial aspect that's often overlooked: the story.

As is common with games that lack cutscenes or directly told plots, people tend to think of games like this as having a weak or nonexistent narrative, when in reality, the opposite is true.

Therefore, in order to highlight the most underrated aspect of this magnificent creation, I invite you to read this list of ten Hollow Knight details that completely change how you see the story.

10 Menderbug is Still Working

The Routine Doesn't Stop Despite the Chaos

Hollow Knight's Menderbug

One of the most admirable yet hidden secrets cherished by the community is the existence of the Menderbug, a small creature tasked with repairing the signs in the Forgotten Crossroads.

Although it's mostly valued for its rarity, my main affection for this diligent insect lies in how it reminds us that, even in a Hallownest ravaged by infection, there are still beings carrying out essential tasks.

We rarely stop to consider how life continues within the desolate town because, honestly, that's not what the game is about, though the Menderbug demonstrates that, despite the harshest of circumstances conceivable, the world doesn't stop.

It's a minor detail in the grand scheme of things, and yet, it's among my favorite aspects of Hollow Knight's environmental storytelling, especially because it points to an element of its contextual construction that is practically never addressed, but is nonetheless present.

9 Lifeblood is an Infection

A Temporary Power that Absorbs You

Hollow Knight's Lifeblood

Although this reality is reinforced by the presence of plasmium in Hollow Knight: Silksong, even in the series' first installment, Lifeblood is considered more of an infection than a blessing, contrary to what its gameplay effect might suggest.

While it mechanically grants extra masks, which are interpreted as empowering the character, it's actually a substance that, when abused, corrupts its host, depriving them of free will and the ability to act independently.

This explains why it is taboo in Hallownest, as well as why its associated Charms are located in secluded places, and why enigmatic figures like Joni have been locked away in isolated caves, since the Pale King understood the danger of it being freely accessible.

Even so, I recommend you break the cocoons every time you see them because the extra masks don't hurt, though every time you do your best to have a lot of blue health points, remember you're sacrificing your independence in the process.

8 The Hive Survived Through Isolation

Only Solitude Could Stop Radiance

Hollow Knight Hive

Among the most important plot points in Hollow Knight is that Radiance controls the minds and wills of most insects in Hallownest, but there is one notable exception: The Hive.

The reason the bees are the only civilization to remain standing is that they chose to isolate themselves from the rest, preventing the power of this primordial evil from corrupting their way of life.

While often overlooked since it's an optional area, this separate reality serves as a tragic reminder of how Radiance's existence penalizes the formation of communities and the connection between beings, as these are aspects that facilitate the spread of its control.

So that the bees could continue to dream, The Hive secluded itself in its own space, cutting off all contact with the outside world. The price to pay for survival in Hallownest is exacted in many ways, and this is one of the most melancholic I can think of.

7 Nosk Reveals Our Impurity

We Aren't a True, Perfect Vessel

Hollow Knight's Nosk

Understanding that our character's goal is to become a receptacle devoid of feelings and thoughts, aiming to be completely incorruptible and thus house Radiance, there's a small detail in Godhome's Nosk that demonstrates how, no matter how hard one tries, creating the Perfect Vessel is impossible.

This special enemy steals the faces from its victims' memories to lure them into its traps, so its winged variant implies that, no matter how much the Knight tries, ultimately he and all the other potential vessels are destined to form bonds with other beings.

After so many adventures and encounters with Hornet, our protagonist inevitably forged a connection with her, strong enough for Nosk to have been able to find her in his memories.

Of course, it might just be Team Cherry trying to add some spice to the DLC, though I think it ultimately reinforces what's already evident throughout the plot: it's impossible to contain Radiance if the only way to do so is to be completely empty.

6 Snail Shamans are Secluded

The Fear of the Void is Very Real

Hollow Knight's Snail Shaman

The fact that there are only three Snail Shamans in all of Hollow Knight is quite striking from the start, considering how powerful they are, and the reasons for their isolation largely explain the reality of Hallownest.

Hollow Knight: 10 Secrets You Probably Missed

Hollow Knight is a sprawling metroidvania, filled with fascinating secrets and lore that you might completely miss on your playthrough.

Although the Pale King used the Void as the central force of the vessels with which he intended to isolate Radiance, it was also a power he feared, recognizing its potential to bring his kingdom to destruction.

Consequently, and to learn more about the Void, the scholars of the Soul Sanctum began experimenting on the Snail Shamans, attempting to harness their power while simultaneously restricting the free existence of their kind.

Despite the understandable fear the Void inspires, the treatment this group received is among the harshest demonstrations of the Pale King's cruelty, a monarch capable of committing atrocities under the guise of safeguarding Hallownest.

5 The Pale King Created The Collector

A Strange Way to Profess Love

Hollow Knight Secrets That Even Veteran Players Sometimes The Collector

Another of the Pale King's most peculiar actions was the creation of The Collector, about whom many hypotheses exist regarding its nature and, even more so, its true purpose.

There is a more or less established consensus that it's an early version of the beings that would eventually be known as Kingsmoulds; however, even more intriguing is the notion that it was conceived to protect Hallonwest's species.

Recognizing the power of Radiance, The Collector would have been created to safeguard the living beings in order to ensure their preservation through time, imprisoning them in the Tower of Love to prevent Radiance's influence from reaching their dreams.

An exaggerated measure that threatens the well-being of the inhabitants, or a necessary decision given the vessels' inability to contain the primordial evil? It's open to debate, but it's precisely this moral ambiguity that makes it so captivating.

4 Hallownest’s Fear Brought Grimm’s Troupe

The Population's Life is a Nightmare

Nightmare King Grimm boss fight from Hollow Knight

Since most species in Hallownest lack communication skills, it's not common to reflect on how they perceive the situation unfolding in their kingdom, but The Grimm Troupe DLC provides the answer.

Specifically, it's a band of beings who pay tribute to the Nightmare Heart, an entity that feeds on the fear and ruin of decaying civilizations, which explains why it was drawn to the place where the game's events take place.

The inhabitants of Hallownest are terrified by the omnipresence of Radiance and, consequently, by dreaming, since the idea of being corrupted and losing all trace of individuality to a primal force is undeniably frightening.

Even though Hollow Knight's bugs don't communicate (with a few exceptions), we know they feel fear, which in retrospect makes going around destroying them all seem more merciful than malevolent.

3 Hornet is Herrah’s Daughter

The Princess of Hallownest has Her Determination

Hollow Knight's Hornet

Hornet is the most prominent supporting character in the entire game, and given her importance to the events, it was expected that she would have a strong motivation for taking on such a crucial role as protector of Hallownest.

10 Reasons Hollow Knight Still Feels Like One of the Most Magical Indie Games Ever Made

Team Cherry made a spectacular debut with an unparalleled game both within and outside its genre.

However, the revelation that she's the daughter of Herrah, who agreed to become a Dreamer to seal away the Radiance infection in exchange for the Pale King granting her offspring, completely changes our perspective of the character.

This shift affects not only her power, already demonstrated by the fact that she's the only boss in the entire game we don't permanently defeat, but also her desires, which now include not only protecting Hallownest but also carrying on the legacy of the spiders.

By testing The Knight, who overcomes the challenges, Hornet finds in her half-brother the peace of mind to share the responsibility of protecting the kingdom, making her character more than just a cool warrior.

2 The Abyss is a Giant Tomb

All Our Fallen Brothers Lie Here

Hollow Knight walking through the The Abyss at the bottom of the map

It may be fairly clear that The Abyss is a giant tomb, though connecting the dots that lead to this reality is the turning point that truly sets the tone for Hollow Knight's story.

The Pale King and the White Lady's most desperate measure to contain the Radiance infection was to use the power of the Void to create hundreds of thousands of vessels, quickly discarded as soon as they developed feelings.

All these young shades are left helpless at the bottom of Hallownest and sealed away to conceal the terrible secret that sustains civilization's survival, an even worse fate than pure death, as they cannot truly find peace.

Hollow Knight always gives the impression of being a melancholic game, but from here on out, it's downright heartbreaking. We could sit and debate the morality of Hallownest's governing decisions, but not so much how dark the plot truly is.

1 The Hollow Knight Wasn’t a Pure Vessel

His Relationship with the Pale King Prevented It

Hollow Knight's Pure Vessel

At the end of the Path of Pain, one of the greatest challenges in all of Hollow Knight, you won't find a weapon upgrade or a new power, but something far more important: the final piece of the puzzle in its story.

The brief cinematic that plays at the culmination of this grueling course, where the Pale King and the Hollow Knight demonstrate their father-son connection, explains the very reason our journey takes place.

Since they both developed feelings for each other, our older brother's fate was irrevocably altered. There's no going back once a bond is formed, and consequently, he was no longer truly capable of keeping Radiance at bay.

His power allowed him to halt its advance, but the dream-eater seeped through the cracks in his mind, reaching a large portion of Hallownest's population and effectively ending the Pale King's attempt to stop the infection.

However, it's that same developed consciousness that leads the Hollow Knight to stab himself during the final battle to make our task easier, being a necessary vestige of hope to carry out our mission, ultimately making his sacrifice not in vain.
