The Metroidvania genre has risen meteorically in popularity over the last decade, and one of the fundamental reasons for this boom lies with Hollow Knight.
Team Cherry's masterpiece perfected the formula to such an extent that numerous games today still attempt to replicate its characteristics, but the average game is unable to achieve the same level of excellence.
The journey to Hallownest remains among the most iconic within and beyond the indie scene, but this is due more to a concatenation of small details that greatly enhance it than mere magic or chance.

10 Reasons Hollow Knight Still Feels Like One of the Most Magical Indie Games Ever Made
Team Cherry made a spectacular debut with an unparalleled game both within and outside its genre.
Therefore, in order to give credit to each of the elements that made this title the marvel it is, here is a list of ten Hollow Knight mechanics that make the game feel completely different from most Metroidvanias.
10 Lighting with Meaning
Training Reflexes
Hallownest presents itself as a bleak and melancholic city, abandoned to its fate without gods to protect it, and lighting plays a fundamental role in the game's ability to convey this.
The inability to see in dark areas not only serves a progression function by limiting your access to certain specific locations like Deepnest, but also accompanies the descent into darkness The Knight must undertake to progress.
Thus, you instill in the player a sense of unease by not being able to see everything on screen at all times, leading them to be constantly alert and tense, while adapting it to the narrative and atmosphere to prioritize immersion over mechanical convenience.
It's not the only Metroidvania to do this, though I'd venture to say no other game in the genre has as many areas so variedly lit as Hollow Knight.
9 Having to Fight to Get Your Geo Back
The Stakes are Always High
Given the influence of FromSoftware's works on Hollow Knight, the mechanic of your money being tied to the last place you died also makes an appearance, but with a rather interesting twist.
Instead of being a static stain, your former self comes to life, moves, and attacks you depending on how many upgrades you've acquired, even turning your own powers against you.
When you're in unexplored territory searching for your shade, the anxiety of knowing it's not as simple as pressing a button and retrieving your geo triples the feeling of unease, instilling an inexplicable pressure not even found in horror games.
When you're an expert, of course, it doesn't matter, though your first playthrough of Hollow Knight, the one where you're afraid to take more than two steps without a nearby bench because you have too many resources, completely changes how you interact with exploration and combat.
8 Secret Charm Synergies
A Highly Customizable Gameplay
Secrets are among Hollow Knight's most exciting aspects, and while they're present in virtually every gameplay and narrative element, my favorites are undoubtedly within the Charms.
Team Cherry didn't just create a considerable number of modifiers that significantly change how the game unfolds, as they also managed to create special combinations they don't ever formally disclose, hoping you'll discover them for yourself.

You may have the platinum trophy in the game, and yet these encounters will cost you more than you expect.
Unleashing your creativity so spontaneously, without tutorials or guides to teach you step-by-step how to achieve certain results, leads to incredibly deep replayability, where you can play through numerous times and feel that each experience is completely different from the last.
The core gameplay remains and is always present, but this also means you're never afraid to try new synergies, as there's always something you've already seen, striking a perfect balance between novelty and familiarity.
7 Overcharming
All or Nothing
Sticking with the Charms system, there's another mechanic Hollow Knight never explicitly describes but has become quite well-known: overcharming.
If you try to equip modifiers beyond your available notches, you unlock the ability to effectively override said limit at the cost of taking double damage, consequently increasing your power and the game's difficulty significantly.
This right granted by the studio to break the game's balance adds an even greater layer of complexity, which is especially exciting for those who have already mastered the base game and want to experience Hollow Knight in new ways.
What in another game would be considered a bug and patched in a matter of days, here's a fundamental part of popular endgame builds within the community, setting it apart from other Metroidvanias.
6 Sequence Breaking
Every Speedrunner's Dream
Hollow Knight has stood the test of time thanks to the deep affection the community has for it, fans that prominently include speedrunners.
Nevertheless, the title's connection with those who enjoy completing games as quickly as possible stems not only from its superb movement mechanics, challenging bosses, and interconnected levels, but also from the very ease with which it can be broken.
Whether it's using the shade you leave behind upon death to access an area you're 20 hours away from reaching, a background element that allows you to bypass the double jump, or spamming your powers to stay airborne longer and reach otherwise inaccessible ledges, there are so many ways to break the intended sequences that many must be deliberately placed.
Therefore, those who are creative enough can face greater challenges by entering areas they shouldn't yet have or make things easier by obtaining upgrades early, offering an uncommon sense of agency within such a premeditated genre.
5 The Nail's Recoil
Power and Strategy
Conveying a sense of power when your character is an insect wielding a nail isn't particularly easy, but Hollow Knight achieves it through recoil.
Along with impact frames, every time you swing your sword, your character is thrown back a few pixels, which not only emphasizes the power of each stroke but also constantly changes your positioning in combat.
In a game with so many vertical and horizontal attacks, the fact that your own thrusts alter your position is highly relevant, as it creates a dynamic situation where you're practically never static.
Everything in the game is fast and agile, and the small but important detail of recoil is among the key factors that make the fights so impactful, and why removing it with the Charm Steady Body makes everything feel so strange.
Positioning Above All Else
Alluding once again to Soulsborne games' influence, the existence of i-frames (being invincible while rolling) became the standard solution for melee action games to evade damage, though Hollow Knight rejected that approach.
Instead, it opted for the unpopular alternative of preventing The Knight from passing through enemies without taking damage (at least until very late in the campaign), which places the entire burden of defense on how well you position yourself.

From a summoner to a mage, from a pure warrior to a hybrid, these are the best charm combinations for your Hollow Knight playstyle.
In a game where platforming is vital to its gameplay, since you're constantly jumping, dashing, and so on, having to rely on these same abilities to avoid damage is frustrating at first but magnificent later on, because it's what allows for such memorable boss fights like Mantis Lords and Watcher Knights.
If you could pass through each attack rather than physically evade it, most of the spectacular attack patterns would remain purely aesthetic, significantly diminishing the enjoyment of the fights.
3 Dynamic Mapping
This is How an Adventure is Made
Metroidvanias place great emphasis on exploration and, consequently, on the mechanisms the player uses to navigate the environment. Therefore, the map plays a fundamental role in every game of the genre.
Although they all tend to use the same system of regionalized items that unlock small portions of the map or that simply open up based on the areas the player visits, Hollow Knight uses both.
When you arrive in a new area, our little warrior becomes a cartographer, creating a rough version of the map based on what he sees, so the player can have a reference point for what they've seen and what remains to be seen.
However, each new area always has an automatic objective: to find the cartographer Cornifer so he can transform our crude attempt at mapping into a truly detailed representation of the environment.
Hence, you experience the enjoyment of exploration and progression while having a clear direction during your quest, which, in most cases, prevents you from feeling lost and unsure of what to do.
2 Dream Nail
A Second Layer of Depth
Hollow Knight's depthis, in general, the easiest way to summarize why it's so captivating, while the Dream Nail is the most compelling expression of said profundity.
It's a tool that redefines our relationship with Hallownest, granting us access to the thoughts of NPCs and enemies, helping to fill the soul meter, and even giving us access to the dream realm, with all the content it entails.
New areas, bosses, ways to travel, and secrets await with the Dream Nail, which feels wonderful after dozens of hours accustomed to a certain way of understanding the game, as it redefines what you know and makes you explore everything with fresh eyes, full of anticipation.
Its inclusion demonstrates Team Cherry perfectly understood that progression and its proper distribution throughout the campaign are essential for creating an addictive Metroidvania, though it turned out to be so incredible that I think it was difficult to foresee how vital it would be to the entire experience.
1 Pogo
Unmatched Verticality
Every time I start playing a new Metroidvania, before I even think about the story, soundtrack, or first boss, my entire focus shifts to a single question: “Does it have pogo?”
If the answer is no, an inevitable and powerful feeling of sadness washes over me, as if a family member had passed away. This is precisely because Hollow Knight built an entire adventure around this mechanic, and it certainly changed my brain chemistry.
For combat, platforming, stylization, verticality, spectacle, and every other element you can think of, the pogo is at the heart of it all. The game wouldn't be nearly as unique without the rebound effect generated by attacking downwards.
Of all the impressive things Hollow Knight does, the pogo is the most subtle yet crucial, and the one you end up missing the most in any other 2D video game, even from those that don't belong to the Metroidvania genre.
