Whether it's trudging through the world of Elden Ring, or grinding out raids in Old School Runescape, Laurence is always up for a challenge. However, in real life, his current challenge is learning how to speak Spanish and cooking authentic Mexican cuisine.

Stardew Valley is a game about freedom and community. You can choose to stay on your farm and become a multi-millionaire, if you wish, but Stardew Valley really comes alive when you interact with the people around you and become a core part of the village.
These people around you have complicated lives, distinct likes and dislikes and stories that unravel as you get to know them. You might love them, you might hate them, but over time, they will quietly make their way into your heart.

These people, and the community that binds them, are part of what has made Stardew Valley one of the most consistently popular indie gems of all time. So let’s take a look at a few of these characters and see what makes them so special.
10 Marnie
The Warming Glow of Stardew Valley
Chances are you’ll first get to know Marnie when you’re trying to fill up your coops and barns. Whether you need chickens, rabbits, or pigs, Marnie has you covered. And of course, first-time farmers always make the mistake of not having enough hay for the winter. Well, Marnie has your back here, too!
If you’re not fond of animals, however, chances are you might have seen Marnie sneaking around with Lewis in the dark! Her secret is safe with us, of course. Just make sure you pick up Lewis’ shorts when you leave her room! I’m sure he will appreciate their safe return!
9 The Wizard
Might, Magic and Mystery!
The Wizard is a very odd character. At the start, you don’t really interact with him that much, save for learning how to communicate with the Junimos.
However, once you’ve completed the community centre, you’ll be able to play through a decently large quest line, involving him and the Witch. It’s a pretty bizarre episode, yet the Obelisk rewards are great for the endgame. In addition, it's nice being able to humanise the wizard a bit, as he’s always seemed pretty removed from the rest of Stardew Valley.
That is, of course, unless you believe the rumours about him and Caroline. But I won’t feed unfounded gossip.
8 Linus
You Don't Need a Lot to be Happy!
It’s easy to see Linus as an outcast, someone not really part of the circle, but the people of Stardew Valley just haven’t made enough of an effort to get to know him.
If you complete enough heart events with Linus, you’ll soon come to realise that he lives the nomadic life by choice. Even if you offer to have him come live on the farm, he will refuse, stating that he enjoys being close to nature. It’s a simple life, but he’s happy, and that’s all that matters.
Later on, when you meet Leo, he and Linus will become fast friends. Don’t forget Linus, he can teach us a lot!
7 Willy
Time Spent Fishing is Time Well Spent
If you’ve ever picked up a rod before and cast it into the shallows, you’ll surely be friends with Willy. A great lover of Catfish and a fishing aficionado, Willy spends most of his time with his lure in the water and behind the counter of his shop at the beach.
The more you get to know Willy, the more amazing recipes he will share with you. And of course, if you want to have a decent chance of catching those legendary fish, you’ll certainly want a buff or two!

Stardew Valley: 8 Most Profitable Pond Fish
Sure, it's passive income, but no one ever wants to catch 10 Lava Eels.
Whether it’s special fishing quests at the Desert festival, a horde of crabs running rampant in the shop, or even ferrying you to and fro from Ginger Island, where there’s water, Willy will be near, and that’s a fact!
6 Pam
Don't Drink and Drive!
Pam can be a pretty divisive character, as many in Stardew Valley are. At the beginning, it’s pretty easy to dislike her, especially as you see the reality of her relationship with Penny.
She has a drinking problem, that’s clear as day, and it certainly doesn’t help when you bring her Pale Ale and Vodka (Strong Stuff). However, when you finally purchase the Community Upgrade, giving her a proper house, you’ll find that she’s trying to work on her drinking. It’s a long road, but with the right support, she’ll get there eventually.
In the meantime, she will always be there to take you to the desert! Handy indeed!
5 Lewis
Unchallenged for 20 years... apparently!
Lewis is one of the first characters you meet upon arriving in Stardew Valley. He is the mayor of the town, and someone you’ll constantly be talking and chatting with, especially during the numerous events and fairs that happen in the town.
But that’s not all! As I mentioned before, you also get little sneak peeks at this discrete relationship with Marnie, and you’re given the choice whether to help them or expose them.
This is, of course, well known, but oddly enough, Lewis is famous for all his strange secrets. Whether it’s the oil, the shorts, the Golden Statue, or even the secret basement in his house, this guy is full of mysteries for us to uncover!
4 Krobus
Shadow Person? Shadow Friend!
Krobus is a monster… but he’s not a monster, if you know what I mean? In fact, Krobus is one of the softest souls you’ll meet on your adventure in Stardew Valley.
You first meet Krobus when descending into the sewers, where you’ll find him selling his wares. He sells some pretty great stuff, from void eggs to Stardrops, to the legendary Return Sceptre!
But of course, he’s much more than a merchant. As you learn more about Krobus, you help him with his struggles against the dwarves, watch him ride sea monsters, and even move in with him, as buddies, of course. And even though he may never grow old like you, you can still treasure that time together.
3 Robin
#1 Fan of Woodcutters Weekly!
It’s odd that one of the first people that springs to mind when I think of Stardew Valley is Robin. Like Lewis, she’s one of the first people you meet when starting a new farm, and over the course of your time there, you’re going to be seeing her almost every day.
Whether it’s simply shopping for homewares, getting upgrades or new buildings, or even just seeing her hard at work on your farm, Robin is an almost constant presence in your life.
She’s a little more subtle than the others, not having a huge amount of events, and you might not think of her of being as a core part of the farm until you ponder it a little more. Robin is completely tied to progress in Stardew Valley, so whether you like it or not, she’s going to be spending almost as much time on your farm as you!
2 Mr. Qi
The Ever Elusive, Ever Watching, Mr Qi!
Mr Qi? What on earth is he doing on this list? It’s funny, at the beginning, Mr Qi was barely a character, but as Concerned Ape continued updating and improving Stardew Valley, Mr Qi became even more involved, yet always mysterious.
Your first encounter with Mr Qi is usually through the quest involving the battery pack in the tunnel, and subsequently in the Casino in the Desert. However, as you progress, you’ll find him in Skull Cavern and then eventually in the Secret Golden Walnut room. Here you’ll be given tonnes of tasks with escalating difficulty, providing a solid endgame experience.
While you can’t become true friends or give gifts to Mr Qi, you spend more time with then so many other villagers! Just be careful not to glitch your way to The Summit, or you’ll be in for a nasty surprise!
1 Your Partner
Happiness is a Mermaid's Pendant Away!
I couldn’t really write a whole list without mentioning the bachelors and bachelorettes, right? It’s odd, as they could really have a whole list of their own, but since most players will only ever marry one, I had to put them here.
Everyone who plays Stardew Valley is going to have their preference for who they end up marrying. Of course, some like to play the field a bit, but in the end, you can only have 1 partner.
It starts with simple gift-giving, then spending more and more time, and eventually learning more and more about each individual character and what makes them truly who they are. Some characters change, and others drop their guard, but soon enough, you’ll end up marrying and moving in together.
Of course, that’s when your life really begins! You get to continue your journey with your chosen person, and even participate in a special 14-heart event! Maybe you’ll choose to have kids! Or perhaps just a couple of new pets. Either way, once you have someone to share your journey with, your farm might finally feel complete.
