With the release of a new Deltarune chapter, there’s the obvious appeals of getting more fun gameplay and some more pieces to the game’s gradually developing puzzle of a narrative. In addition to those, though, a new chapter also brings a gaggle of new characters to obsess over and draw fanart of, whether they be some of the new rank and file enemy encounters of the major, plot-relevant NPCs and bosses. Naturally, Chapter 5 is no exception to this, particularly with its centered focus on Asgore’s flower shop.

Deltarune Chapter 5 Hilariously Immortalizes One Devs Obsession With Final Fantasy 14 Related

Toby Fox and his crew have this miraculous ability to create perfectly quirky characters that precisely wedge themselves in your subconscious, either with endearing character traits, hilarious shtick, or personalities you can’t help but empathize with (or hate, but in a fun way). In the brief time since Chapter 5 launched, these particular characters have already taken social platforms by storm, bringing with them fanart, headcanons, and general gushing by the proverbial bucketful.

Spoilers for Deltarune Chapter 5 ahead!

10 Netskie

Mind the Tail

Deltarune Netskie

I feel like it’s a given that any JRPG or JRPG-adjacent game will, inevitably, have some manner of dalliance with trickster foxes at some point. Kitsune, fox spirits that can transform themselves to trick people, make for a good enemy archetype, and given the Flower Kingdom’s Japanese aesthetics, I guess it wasn’t that surprising that a critter like Netskie showed up.

Netskie, which I assume is a play on “netsuke,” a little decorative statue carved into an animal shape, are fox-like Darkners who like to duplicate and transform themselves to trick and disorient you. They’re also very proud of their, and I’m using the game’s vernacular here, “big fluffy $$$$-ing tails.” It’s a very obnoxious critter, but its elaborately-patterned tail and distinctive laugh animation, not to mention the frequency with which they pop up around the chapter, have given it a more distinctive presence compared to the other enemy encounters of Chapter 5.

9 Kawkaw

No Thoughts, Only Mlem

Deltarune Kawkaw

Every chapter of Deltarune has had at least one regular enemy type who would probably make a really good plushie, like the Hathys, the Tasques, the Pippins, the Mizzles, and so on. If I had to pick a single enemy in Chapter 5 who deserves to get the plushie treatment, it would be the Kawkaws, full stop.

Kawkaws are small crow-like Darkners who pop out of the ground on the Cliffs below the Flower Kingdom proper. They’re very friendly and almost dog-like in demeanor, with the CHECK ACTs saying they consider battling to be the same as playing. If you call them over to you, they’ll joyfully run on up and give you a big, sloppy kiss (which, unfortunately, also slows down your SOUL when dodging attacks). They also make the cutest little “nyon” noises, which I could totally see coming out of a voicebox on a plushie. My only question is what these things’ Light World counterparts are. I assume they’re not regular crows since, well, why would Asgore have a bunch of crows in his flower shop, but if not that, then what?

8 Orange

Never Skips Breakfast

Deltarune Orange

Orange is the smallest member of Asgore’s 7 Colored Flowers, a small mouse-like creature dressed up like a martial artist. Apparently, she missed the memo that humans have neither round ears nor tails, though she seems to think she’s the epitome of humanity. Don’t bother telling her she’s wrong, or she’ll throw a tantrum.

As the smallest, Orange is a bit shy and insecure, overcompensating for her size by being boisterous and rude and accusing anyone she believes to have slighted her of being a bully. Her magic allows her to conjure up orange boxing gloves that can fly in any direction, though they’re not particularly strong on their own. With the help of the other Flowers, though, especially Green, Orange can charge up her strength to a surprising degree and become a genuine threat when the circumstances are right. She does like to make friends, though, and would probably have been easier for the party to befriend had Ralsei not kept inadvertently insulting her with cheese puns.

7 Yellow

Yeehaw, Pardner

Deltarune Yellow

Yellow is the tallest member of the 7 Colored Flowers, and a bona-fide gunslingin’ cowpoke. I think. Flowery apparently wanted to put on a cowboy show for Asgore because he thought he’d like it, but whether Yellow is doing the cowboy thing because of that or was already like that, I couldn’t say.

Whatever the reason for his western ways, Yellow is a firm adherent to the concepts of justice, acting as a peacekeeper for the Flower Kingdom. He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, given how easily Kris and company trick him into giving them his key, but his desire for love and peace is the real deal. It’s so real, in fact, that when he thinks he’s become a criminal, he begins concocting increasingly elaborate ways to punish himself, such as burying himself in the sand, getting run over by a train, or blasting himself with a giant death ray.

6 Aqua

Innocence Incarnate

Deltarune Aqua

Aqua is the first member of the 7 Colored Flowers that the party encounters, and it’s a pretty distinctive encounter at that. Compared to her counterparts, Aqua doesn’t quite seem to grasp why they look like humans, what they’re trying to accomplish, or what’s even happening around her, but she’s down to clown with whatever as long as it’s fun.

Aqua has innocence comparable to a small child, always asking questions and making brutally honest observations, then laughing and doing a silly little dance whether she understands or not. She’s very cute and endearing, though her tendency to throw knives around tampers that down a smidgen. She’s most often paired up with Seth in their efforts to stop the party, but she also has a tendency to just sort of pop up anywhere and everywhere something interesting is happening, and quickly latches onto Kris due to them both being light blue in coloration.

5 Seth

Knowledge is Power

Deltarune Seth

Seth is the self-proclaimed tactician of the 7 Colored Flowers, who believes the answers to all of life’s problems can be uncovered with sufficient planning and study. They’re also a walking bundle of neurosis, though, so in the event those plans are stifled in any way, and they usually are, they don’t have much else to fall back on besides complaining and running away.

Apparently, Seth used to be named “Purple,” but they adopted a new name that they felt was more befitting of their new human form, and urges the others to do the same. Despite their awkward-ness, they do have a genuine desire to help and support Asgore, possibly second only to Flowery, which is why they’re trying so hard to hamper the party. Also, apparently they’re a fan of Berdly? I guess they think he’s really smart and wants to be like him, which is how Kris was able to bribe them with one of Berdley’s feathers.

4 Blue

The Power of Love

Deltarune Blue

Blue is one of the most prominent members of the 7 Colored Flowers. He doesn’t seem to fill any particular role in the group, but the others really respect him, especially Yellow, with the two all but stated to be in a romantic relationship. Blue is a passionate and elegant ballet dancer, conducting himself in a poetic manner as he moves gracefully through the Flower Kingdom castle.

From the moment Kris and company meet him, Blue makes clear that he is, above everything else, a champion of love. He considers any pursuit rooted in love to be a beautiful one, whether it’s the Flowers’ love for Asgore, Asgore’s love for his family, Susie’s blooming love for Noelle, or Ralsei’s love for Lightners, especially Kris. He’s not much for overt conflict compared to the rest of the Flowers, though when he becomes suspicious that the party hurt Yellow, he starts to take a slightly more overtly aggressive stance. You don’t touch Blue’s precious cowboy. You just don’t do it.

3 Green

Everyone’s Friend

Deltarune Green

Green is the chef and caretaker of the 7 Colored Flowers, and quite possibly the most objectively nice person Kris, Susie, and Ralsei have ever met. They either can’t talk or choose not to, but they’re good at expressing themselves nonetheless, either with quick nods and headshakes, friendly little hand waves, or if necessary, a big ol’ cartoony sign pulled out of nowhere. Green feels rather Hanna-Barbera-coded in that way, and I love them for that.

Green appears regularly throughout the Flower Kingdom Castle, aiding both the party and the other Flowers with tasty food and helpful shop services. They don’t seem to be interested in fighting for either side, working instead to foster peace and good vibes, expertly matching everyone’s vibe with a fistbump for Susie and a hug for Ralsei. Even near the end of the chapter, when the Flowers are trying to stop the party from reaching the Fountain, Green’s only act of “resistance” is to open a shop where everything is exactly one dollar more expensive than their regular shop.

2 Flowery

Sorry to Keep You Waiting

Deltarune Flowery

The de facto leader of the 7 Colored Flowers and, according to him, Asgore’s “best friend and college roommate,” Flowery is without a doubt the most powerful individual in the Flower Kingdom. He’s effortlessly charismatic, able to easily sway others to his side with a skill rivaling even Kris’s, and is apparently able to futz with his own stats to max out all of his capabilities. He styles himself as a handsome young human man, with expertly coiffed hair and a jacket perpetually slung over his shoulder.

Flowery’s first and foremost priority in all things is Asgore, with Asgore having grown him and the other flowers to make his wedding bouquet to Toriel. Flowery wants Asgore to stay in the Flower Kingdom Dark World to get a chance at the happiness he believes Toriel, Kris, and Asriel took away from him, and attempts to cater to his every whim to facilitate that. He’s kind of insufferable, especially to Ralsei, whom he seems to have some history with, but it’s only because he’s genuinely trying as hard as he possibly can to make an ideal world for Asgore and the other Flowers to live in.

1 Pink

Cutie Mew Mew Magic

Deltarune Pink boss

Chapter 5’s secret boss and the unofficial eighth member of the 7 Colored Flowers, Pink is a figure of the anime character Mew Mew that Asgore apparently had lying around, at least partially. Orange sees Pink as an older sister figure, and she’s generally nice and friendly, at least until she feels threatened by the party. Said threat comes about from Ralsei and Susie realizing that Asgore didn’t have a pink flower, and Pink trying to violently persuade them otherwise.

Rather than a traditional Darkner or a plant, Pink is actually a hybrid entity composed of the Darkner of that anime figure and a Lightner possessing it. That Lightner, the angry ghost who lives with Napstablook, likes to possess the figure when Asgore isn’t around to feel closer to her ideal self, and got drawn into the Dark World by accident when the Fountain was made. This is a bit of a problem, as both sides of Pink are at odds with one another, and the ghost won’t be able to keep the body once the Fountain is sealed, though Ralsei and Susie at least offer to bring it to Castle Town so she can keep using it. Technically, a counterpart of this character appeared in Undertale as Mad Mew Mew, but she’s different enough that we can still call her new.
