His gaming journey spans decades of devotion. He (gladly) sacrificed most of his childhood to Warcraft III and its various mini-games, which made him immediately rebuy the game when Reforged came out, despite its bad reviews. Beyond RTS classics, he also has a soft spot for WWII shooters and RPGs that don't require too much grinding.
LEGO is one of those things that connects the childhoods of many generations, from boomers to Gen Z, so it's no wonder the popular toy maker has jumped into the gaming world and offered many memorable sets to fans of video games. Still, not every LEGO gaming set is going to be viral, and some were more popular than others.
9 LEGO Games With Amazing Couch Co-Op Design
Everyone loves building LEGOs with their buds.
As we jump into the most popular gaming LEGO sets that sold out, we'll actually tell a story about which sets hit nostalgia the hardest and found that sweet spot with people who are mostly used to playing video games.
10 LEGO Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi Starfighter
Famous Jedi Is a Must-Have
The massively popular movie franchise Star Wars has been in the gaming industry for a while now, and its reach is probably one of the more interesting ones out there. The Obi-Wan Starfighter is a small but highly sought-after set, as it features one of the more popular characters in the whole franchise, his robot sidekick R4-P17, and Taun We, a Kaminoan aide to Prime Minister Lama Su.
With 282 pieces, its affordable price of $29, and the inclusion of Taun We, probably contributed to the item selling out, as this is the latter's only appearance in any official LEGO set. The Jedi Starfighter itself is also based on its appearance in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, which gave longtime fans another recognizable prequel-era ship to add to their collection.
9 LEGO Fortnite Battle Bus
Everybody On Board
It's not a big surprise that one of the most popular battle royale games will have its own very highly sought-after LEGO set and that it will often be sold out. Battle Bus has 954 pieces for its $99 price tag and brings the classical blue battle bus tied to a balloon with detachable roof, as well as 9 mini figures which include Adventure Peely, Battalion Brawler, Brite Bomber, Cuddle Team Leader, Cube Assassin, Trespasser Elite, Drift, Meowscles, and Raven. And they all fit the bus!
The crossover between LEGO and Fortnite was almost guaranteed to be a hit, because it appealed to both gamers and collectors. To top it further, the owners of the set got a free "Operation Brite Starter Pack" bundle that was usually sold separately in Fortnite.
8 LEGO Minecraft The Crafting Table
Ready To Go Down Memory Lane?
Minecraft has its way of marking anniversaries, and it decided to mark its 15th one with this simple and nostalgic LEGO set in 2024. Not surprisingly, the popularity of this $89 collectible skyrocketed, and it was selling out fast on the LEGO store. With 1195 pieces, it features Minecraft's iconic crafting table, along with 5 mini builds representing some of the most popular biomes.
What made this set stand out was how different it felt from the usual LEGO Minecraft releases. Instead of focusing on play elements, LEGO designed it as an 18+ decorative display model aimed at longtime fans who grew up with the game.
7 LEGO Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck
Who Knew Robot Giraffes Were So Popular?
This was the first Lego set based on the Horizon Forbidden West game, and it sold out quickly upon release in 2022 from Lego’s website. The gaming partnership with one of the best-looking open-world games turned out to be a great choice for the toymaker when they released this $89 set.
The 1222-piece giraffe-like Recon machine is one of the game's trademarks, as it was often featured in their promo material and trailers. And even though the market was pretty niche compared to some other gaming and movie products Lego has, it sold surprisingly fast and is retired at the moment of writing this article. Still, if you really want to find it, it should be possible through secondary online markets like eBay.
8 Video Game LEGO Sets That Prove the Brand Is Targeting Adults More Than Ever
You need to get the reference, have the patience to build it, and be able to afford it.
6 LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi
16-bit Is In Again
Mario riding Yoshi set is getting popular and often sells out in places like the Nintendo Store UK, which currently doesn't have it in stock, even though it's available on the US LEGO store site for $129, while its planned retirement will go into effect in July 2026. The set itself is a 15.5-inch-tall 16-bit 2D model with a crank on the side that simulates the movement of Mario and Yoshi when turned. The inner mechanism also allows for Yoshi to open his mouth and pop his tongue out. It has 1215 pieces, which means it's not one of the more complex boxes out there.
Part of the set’s popularity likely comes from how different it feels compared to most Nintendo-themed LEGO releases. Instead of recreating a console or a location, it turns Super Mario World into a moving display piece in the style of classic SNES-era pixel art. LEGO also designed it primarily for adult collectors rather than for play, which helped it appeal to both longtime Mario fans and people looking for a nostalgic gaming centerpiece for their shelf.
5 LEGO Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale
DnD Fans Like Their LEGO Sets Massive
The DnD set is a massive box with 3745 pieces and a lot of details on it, including the obviously big red dragon. At the time of writing this article, it is on backorder in the US LEGO store, because it is one of those sets that gets bought out fast, despite the $349 price tag. Since it's set to retire in July 2026, there probably won't be deals on this one, and it will likely be sold at a higher price tag after LEGO discontinues it.
Even though DnD is primarily a video game, although games like Baldur's Gate 3 are a perfect starting point for those who want to get a taste of it, we couldn't skip putting it on our list, as DnD is a massive part of the gaming community worldwide.
4 LEGO The Burrow Collectors' Edition
Warm Home Atmosphere And Plenty of Secrets
The Harry Potter franchise has been in the hearts and minds of many gamers for generations now, so the demand is huge even for sets like this one, which represent the family home of the Weasleys. Expectedly, among the minifigures you'll find Arthur, Molly, Bill, Charlie, Percy, Erol, Fred, George, Ron, Ginny, and Harry! Even though this box was released in the fall of 2024, it's often out of stock.
The main secret behind this $259 set is most likely its many secrets, such as the fact that the house is split down the middle and can be opened and closed, the floo flames chimney where figures can disappear, or the magical self-washing dishes. With 2405 pieces, plenty of playtime is guaranteed, so even though this isn't the Hogwarts castle itself or the Gringotts Wizarding Bank, it will probably remain up there as one of the most popular sets of the franchise.
8 LEGO Video Games That Were Way More Ambitious Than Anyone Expected
These games were bigger in scope than their block-y appearances suggested.
3 LEGO Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block
A Big Mystery Box
The famous Super Mario 64 Queston Mark Block is now officially retired, but when it was first released in 2021, it did sell out a few times with temporary backorders on LEGO's official site. The set was then retired in 2024, but what surprised most fans is that the last batch was sold out before the official retirement date and caught some of them unprepared.
The box contains 2064 pieces with a nonstandard LEGO character depicting Super Mario and others with three little brick pieces, instead of LEGO's well-known body design. The original price for the set was $169, and today brand-new ones can be found starting at around $240 while used ones can be found in the ballpark of the original price.
2 LEGO Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise
Are You Ready to Catch Them All?
This massive LEGO set, containing 6838 pieces, has been selling out quickly, even though it was priced at $649. LEGO has been restocking it and at the moment of writing this article it was available, although nobody knows how long that can last. On top of that, LEGO fans are used to their favorite toys being a bit more expensive, but this big set has really proven that they will spare a dime when legendary characters like these are involved. Especially Charizard, who was probably one of the more iconic Pokémon out there since the beginning of the whole franchise.
Another reason why this set caused great attention among Pokémon fans was that it allowed them to lay their hands on a Kanto Region Badge Collection, which was only available as a gift for Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise set. One Reddit user who received a lot of upvotes has even claimed that these badges would be their only reason for buying the set.
1 LEGO Great Deku Tree 2-in-1
Which Version Do You Like More?
Great Deku Tree, a recurring living tree character in Zelda games, so no wonder the fans of this game just jumped on the opportunity to grab it as soon as it came out in the spring of 2024. The $300 price tag on this set probably comes from the fact that it allows the owner to build two different versions of The Great Deku Tree. One from Ocarina of Time, where it takes you into one of the best video game dungeons, and the other from Breath of the Wild. Add to that the fact that this set also contains 2 mini versions of Link, a Young Link, and Princess Zelda, and you are getting a lot of fan attention.
The 2500-piece Great Deku Tree set is to be discontinued in July 2026, according to GameRant, and its price could likely rise after that since large Nintendo-themed LEGO sets have a history of becoming much harder to find once production ends, especially ones tied to beloved franchises.
