I play video games as much for the stories and characters as I do just to get a break from the real world. Starsand Island is one of those games I find myself returning to just because it feels like a much-needed vacation. There are so many reasons why Starsand Island excels as a cozy game, and its island vibes are only a small part of it.
12 Best Cozy Games with Lots of Collectibles
Cozy games are great, but cozy games with endless things to collect? Even better. From feathers to fish, these are the ultimate collection-heavy games
Starsand Island itself is as much a beach travel destination as it is for the island's residents. The combination of beach town and farming game puts it into a place where it feels like a vacation, even if you're working. This vibe is present in every feature of the game, from the island's design to the weather, food, and clothing options. Here are some of the ways that Starsand Island is one of my favorite games to escape to.
10 An Abundance of Cute Clothes
An Outfit for Any Occasion
Clothes go a long way in establishing a setting, and I'm the kind of player that likes to have my character change her outfit and hair before she leaves the house for the day. I'm very happy with the variety of summer clothes, most of which aren't perfect for a farmer, but are great for beach combing and shopping in town.
Most of the clothing options for Starsand Island just scream beach vibes. Even in the coldest months of the year, the outfits include fashionable options that wouldn't look out of place in a style magazine. Many people often only dress up like this while on vacation, and many of the swimsuits and summer clothing options are styled for a tropical holiday.
9 Starsand Island is Easily Traversable
It Doesn't Take Forever to Get to Places
Starsand Island itself is the perfect size. It's possible to travel across the island in just a few minutes, which translates to a few hours in-game. This makes it the ideal size for a travel destination, and offers a variety of landscapes in a relatively small area.
There are a number of ways to get around the island, all of which are fun in their own way. Using a skateboard or rollerblades is stupidly fun, and my poor character's knees must be finished from all the sick tricks I make her do to save time while traveling. The wide spaces, beautiful environments, and easily traversable paths make Starsand Island a destination all of its own.
8 The Mild Weather
The Perfect Climate for the Outdoors
Rainy days, even in cozy games, can become unpredictable, with rain evolving into thunderstorms. However, even the rainy days on Starsand Island are pleasant, gently soaking the earth and giving you a day off from most farming chores. Because the rain isn't strong, it doesn't feel weird to be working outside, making the outdoors an option all year round.
Top 10 Cozy Games With Satisfying Progression
An in-depth list of The Top 10 Coziest Games With Satisfying Progression.
The island's mild climate meshes perfectly with the idea of Starsand Island as a vacation destination, no matter the weather or season. The lack of extreme weather means that even going out on the sea can be done all year round.
7 The Beautiful Shops
Get the Vibe Right from the Outset
Starsand Island has shops dotted across the island, but most of them are concentrated in the main town center. The shops themselves are incredibly charming and beautifully decorated, with each one showcasing the goods they sell. They also stand out in perfectly matching the vacation feeling of the island, and the personality of the owner shines in the decor options and display choices.
Shops like Lunelle's clothing and pattern shop, the coffee shop, and even the general store all have small-town but travel destination charm. They sell essentials for the island's residents, but dishes at the restaurant and special regional sewing patterns also reflect the island's tourism.
6 A Small But Modern Town
Starsand Town is Made For Visits
The main town on Starsand Island is tiny, but everything has a purpose, and it feels populated and lived-in. Despite its size, it's beautifully designed, and it has a distinct and modern architectural style. Touches like a wisteria trellis shading the road, art on the walls, and the paved road in-town all give the vibe of a town that's benefited from tourism.
Navigating around the town is really easy as the roads are all interconnected and the layout of the town is designed for efficiency, making it just as easy to navigate on foot as it is in a vehicle.
5 Tourists Everywhere
This is a Vacation Destination
Many cozy game towns are often only inhabited by their residents, which makes them feel a bit disconnected from the wider world. Starsand Island is populated with a ton of NPCs beyond its residents, to the point that it feels special when you spot them in the crowd. The filler NPCs are simply labeled "Tourist".
10 Cozy Games for Players Who Love to Explore Beyond the Farm
Cozy games have evolved over time, with some of the best offering rewarding exploration among other new features, but not all succeed.
While this isn't particularly interesting, it does make it feel like Starsand Island is a tourist destination and exists as a part of a wider world. Having so many tourists also drives home that Starsand Island is a travel destination, and getting to live there feels like a vacation.
4 The Food
Everything Tastes Better on Vacation
Cooking is often a big part of cozy games, and the sheer number of different recipes in Starsand Island makes me very happy as a foodie. Starsand Island's cuisine goes a long way in centering it as a desirable destination, with Aurelis being a foreign chef who specifically came to the island because of its natural produce.
There are a lot of food options in Starsand Island, and many of them are drawn from South-East and East Asian cuisine, such as coconut rice, braised fish dishes, dumplings, and sashimi. The cuisine of Starsand Island is mostly based on what exists in real world, centering it as a locale that feels like it could be real.
3 It's a Tourist Destination for Other Games
Meet Characters from Other Games
It's hard to ignore that Starsand Island is a vacation spot when characters from other games visit the island on vacation. Ginger and Gust from My Time at Portia, and Nia and Fang from My Time at Sandrock make surprise visits to the island, under the excuse of getting fresh air and improving their health.
Having visitors from other games goes a long way in making Starsand Island feel like a destination, perhaps even one that your own characters from My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock can visit. It turns Starsand Island from a self-contained, tiny island into one that's clearly a part of a much larger world.
2 The Beach Festival
Celebrate a Holiday
Beach vacations often coincide with events as people make the most of the warm weather. Starsand Island's beach festival is the ultimate summer vacation event. There's a night concert, events to participate in during the day, stalls to buy limited-edition clothing and recipes, and a lot of prep work in the days before the event begins.
Another nice touch is that the festival itself exists as a way to give thanks to the world's ocean goddess, making the festival a part of Starsand Island's lore. This gives the festival more depth, and hopefully it can be expanded upon once Starsand Island leaves Early Acces.
1 All the Beach Vibes
Spend Your Days at the Beach
Tropical getaways are one of the most desirable vacation destinations, and Starsand Island delivers on that front. The ocean is just a stone's throw away from wherever you are on Starsand Island. You can see the ocean from the top of the hill at the temple, while it's just a couple of steps away from your starting home.
Having the beach so close by all the time goes a long way in driving home the tropical vacation feel of Starsand Island. Taking the day off from farming or mining and spending the day at the beach makes it feel like a tropical vacation despite the fact that you're right there at home.
