A decade and a half after its release, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim continues to be among the most discussed open worlds in the video game industry, and the reasons for this are so numerous that it's entirely understandable.

7 Open World RPGs With User Reviews Better Than Skyrim

These are 7 open-world RPGs that are way better than Skyrim in the eyes of players, at least according to their review scores.

Bethesda's masterpiece is one of the greatest representatives of the interactive medium in the 21st century, with a quality that makes you feel immersed in its world to the point that simply existing within it is wonderful.

Many have tried to replicate the essence and characteristics of this magnificent production, but matching a titan of this magnitude, while not impossible, certainly feels like a distant possibility.

Therefore, in order to remember such an outstanding adventure and, at the same time, demonstrate its still-present supremacy in the genre, I invite you to explore this list of ten Skyrim dungeons that still feel more memorable than entire modern RPG zones.

10 Shimmermist Cave

An Atypical Atmosphere

 Skyrim's Shimmermist Cave

The sheer number of caves in Skyrim is truly overwhelming, but it's only after exploring most of them that you realize why Shimmermist Cave is so unique.

While mechanically it's very similar to its counterparts, especially due to the recurring presence of Falmer and Chaurus, what truly sets it apart is its aesthetic and atmosphere, as its bioluminescent style, replete with glowing mushrooms and mist-filled chambers, gives it a really different vibe.

This is a game that can transform a trivial encounter into a tense and terrifying experience simply by changing the lighting, color palette, and level layout, which is precisely what Shimmermist Cave does without needing to include unique rewards or unforgettable fights.

Much of the game's magic lies in seemingly unremarkable locations that, nevertheless, evoke entirely different sensations, rather than simply repeating the same gameplay formula to give you some loot and send you on your way without giving you immersive reasons to remember what you saw.

9 Shroud Hearth Barrow

Earthly Ghosts

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim's Shroud Hearth Barrow

I lost count of the number of stellar moments I had in Skyrim by repeating the formula of arriving in a town, entering the local inn, and seeking information about what's been happening in the surrounding area lately, with Shroud Hearth Barrow being a particular highlight.

What begins as a supposed investigation of a haunted dungeon turns into a story full of plot twists, tomb raiders using potions to appear ethereal and steal peacefully, and a level structure that gradually reveals itself to suit the quest's pace.

First, you see the main chambers, and then, when you acquire the Sapphire Dragon Claw, you have the freedom to explore the massive surroundings, including plenty of loot, combat, and even a unique mural that truly gives the whole location a different vibe.

However, what I like most about it is the entire process of finding it and discovering what's happening within it, because it's an organic series of events where you truly feel like a medieval researcher gathering clues to unravel an inexplicable secret.

8 Frostmere Crypt

Living a Nordic Myth

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim's Frostmere Crypt

There aren't many occasions in Skyrim where you can make a decision that significantly alters the outcome of a particular objective, but the Pale Lady's quest in Frostmere Crypt is a special exception.

Baldurs Gate 3, Dragon's Dogma 2, and The Witcher 3 Related

It's not just a fascinating cave because of the lore surrounding it, said to be the dwelling place of an ancient spirit that has been driving away Ysgramor's descendants for centuries, but also because of its gameplay.

While exploring and eventually encountering the boss, you can decide whether to keep the Pale Blade and fight her (a truly striking encounter with powerful clones) or return the weapon to its pedestal to appease its shrieks, allowing you the unusual power of choice in a game where almost everything is straightforward.

In any case, the confrontation takes place in the final part of Frostmere Crypt, where a beautiful subterranean forest works as a breathtakingly impressive background, making it a unique visual landscape within the entire game.

7 Frostflow Lighthouse

Showing Off Narrative Mastery

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim's Frostflow Lighthouse

A very valid criticism Skyrim has faced over the years is how the imperative nature of its indicators somewhat diminishes the immersion it achieves through all the other elements, especially considering that they can create places as magical as Frostflow Lighthouse.

Here, without any markers or quests, you enter a horror story where you uncover the sequence of events thanks to environmental clues, showing the death of the family who recently acquired the place.

From seeing the blood on the walls to finding the father's remains in the stomach of the giant Chaurus that killed the residents, you gradually build the nightmare as you delve deeper into the dungeon, ultimately being able to bring peace to the Redguard's remains by burning them on the ceiling.

It's not spectacular or grandiose within the grand scheme of the game's lore, but rather a fragmented and grounded, quite tragic story that becomes even more powerful because you stumble upon it almost by chance, making the experience more natural and immersive.

6 Liar’s Retreat

A Spiraling Conflict

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim's Liar's Retreat

The name Liar's Retreat is quite familiar to anyone who has completed the magnificent quest Discerning the Transmundane, though its usefulness isn't the only reason to hold it in such high regard.

In reality, what distinguishes this intriguing place is the way relevant narrative and mechanical elements converge, as it offers one of the best weapons in the game (The Longhammer) and, at the same time, showcases the region's diverse culture and species.

Certainly, it's in the form of corpses left by our Falmer friends, but wandering through the area cleaning up the aftermath of the skirmish is a reflection of these lands' reality, perpetually in conflict both within themselves and with nature.

Many blood types for the Daedric quest, a powerful Warhammer, the opportunity to kill corrupted elves, environmental storytelling… Liar's Retreat constitutes the best aspects of Skyrim's story and gameplay, all in a place that speaks more about the world than it initially seems.

5 Bleak Falls Barrow

The Beginning of a Lifetime's Journey

Bleak Falls Barrow is the blueprint for the majority of Skyrim's dungeons, making it one of the most iconic locations among the hundreds of points of interest the adventure offers.

Skyrim: 10 Strangest Side Quests, Ranked

Skyrim offers players several unique and strange side quests, but these are some of the most bizarre yet entertaining ones in the game.

Within these walls, you have your first encounter with many key elements of Skyrim's universe: draugrs, claw and pillar puzzles, words of power, secret loot… It's a perfect introduction that teaches you what to expect from each dungeon visit.

I've forgotten entire games over time, though no matter how many years pass, I'll never forget being sent by Farengar Secret-Fire to find the Dragonstone, because it marked the beginning of one of the journeys of my life.

Compared to other dungeons, it lacks truly unique elements since its function is different, but it's precisely its role as a tutorial, which it fulfills perfectly, that makes it so memorable.

4 Labyrinthian

Ruins Made to Be Lost In

The skeletal dragon boss fight in Labyrinthian, as part of the College of Winterhold quests for Skyrim.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from Bleak Falls Barrow, you have Labyrinthian, one of Skyrim's most spatially, narratively, and gameplay-wise complex locations, perhaps even a contender for the game's ultimate expression of depth.

First and foremost, it's a place steeped in lore, a space built by Arch-Mage Shalidor, founder of the College of Winterhold, to test his successors, making it a delight for those players who have chosen to become mages.

From unique puzzles that yield impressive items (Diadem of the Savant, Staff of Magus) to a physical layout unlike any other in the game, both for its labyrinthine design and the presence of enemies like Skeletal Dragons and the Dragon Priest Morokei, it literally has it all.

It's one of Skyrim's largest, most expansive, and densest dungeons, so its inclusion on this list is inevitable. You can spend hours exploring its interior and surroundings, and you will continue to discover reasons to delve deeper, almost as if it were a game in itself.

3 Pinewatch

A Deceptive Modesty

pinewatch-cottage-skyrim

One of my favorite aspects of Skyrim is when it decides to subvert player expectations, and I dare say few locations do it as well as Pinewatch.

What from the outside looks like a simple shack you've seen a thousand times throughout your adventures hides an underground complex behind a simple button that functions as a sanctuary for bandits, including a bar where outlaws gather far from the law's eyes.

Besides being a special place due to its connection with the majestic Thieves Guild questline, it feels especially well-suited for players who have chosen to be stealthy assassins, thanks to both the challenges it presents and the level design itself.

In direct comparison, it may be less unique than other dungeons, but Pinewatch stands out for the secrecy surrounding its true nature, which is remarkable considering it's a tactic Bethesda didn't use extensively throughout the game.

2 Skuldafn

The Gates to Heaven

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim's Frostflow Skuldafn

Skuldafn is, in terms of its uniqueness, the most outstanding dungeon in Skyrim, both because it literally serves as the gateway to heaven, Sovngarde, and because of everything surrounding it.

Besides being the only dungeon you can't return to by any means, and the only one you can reach by riding a dragon, it's a roller coaster from beginning to end, especially since it's among the few times the campaign makes you feel like there's truly something at stake.

In that regard, it's packed with the strongest enemies in the title, so much so that it's the only location in my first playthrough where I died more than once, and you can miss loot like Nahkriin's mask. Thus, you're constantly on edge about what you might miss if you're not careful, which is an uncommon feeling in the rest of the areas.

The build-up is immaculate, and the payoff is even better when you finally reach that majestic and unique portal to finally set foot in the game's final area, making Skuldafn by far one of the highlights of all of Skyrim.

1 Blackreach

A Discovery for Posterity

Still from The Elder Scrolls 5 of the Blackreach dungeon.

However, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the best dungeon in Skyrim, and probably the most magical moment of the hundreds of hours it offers, is arriving at Blackreach for the first time.

Whether through a quest or free exploration, as was my case, stumbling upon this subterranean network of luminescent caves with its own sun, flora, and fauna is the closest we'll ever come to experiencing something arcane.

The shift in atmosphere and tone is so profound that it translates to the gameplay, combining a sense of wonder and excitement with uncertainty and dread, because you feel like you're exploring completely uncharted lands.

When it comes to enemy variety, loot, narrative elements, interesting monoliths visible in the distance, aesthetic quality, and overall ambiance, Blackreach is simply divine; the most memorable experience any Skyrim player could ever have.

Years go by, and my skin can't help but prickle every time I set foot in it, especially because no matter how deep I delve, I somehow always end up discovering something new that makes me fall even more in love with it.
