15 Clever Easter Eggs in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

1 hour ago 2

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight honors the tradition of referential humor and Easter eggs the series is known for. While there is no shortage of deep-cut Batman references and callbacks, we're more focused on Easter eggs referencing non-Batman material. After all, the whole game is basically an endless stream of Batman references, making it hard to call any of those an Easter egg. Instead, we've pulled together the Easter eggs referencing other media and memes. See how many of these you recognize. Note that this will have some minor spoilers.

It's Always Sunny in Gotham

During the Penguin boss fight, the Penguin makes a reference to the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, shouting "So anyway, I started blastin.'" This goes a layer deeper, since Danny DeVito, who plays Frank Reynolds in the show, also played the Penguin in Batman Returns, which this version of the Penguin is directly based on. He's got a few other lines during the boss fight that make other pop culture references, like "Merry Christmas, you filthy animals" from Home Alone 2.

Street Fighter II

After tracking down Black Mask and disabling his security system, he attempts to escape in his sports car. Batman and Batgirl stop him, before the camera shifts to a side angle as you punch his car into pieces, referencing the car smashing from Street Fighter II.

He's got a particular set of skills

Ra's Al Ghul makes an appearance in Gotham during the prologue, inviting Bruce Wayne to train with the League of Assassins. His opening line is "I have a particular set of skills," referencing Liam Neeson's line in the movie Taken. Neeson also played Ra's in Batman Begins, referencing the actor's other work, just like with DeVito.

Look at that subtle off-white coloring

Referencing Batman actors' other work is a running theme in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Early in Chapter One, Batman makes a visit to Wayne Enterprises, where he hands his business card to the assistant at the counter. There, a minifig who looks like Jared Leto's character Paul Allen from American Psycho starts remarking on the quality of the card itself. Of course, Christian Bale stars in American Psycho and played Batman in the Christopher Nolan trilogy.

A tribute to Kevin Conroy

A billboard found throughout Gotham pays tribute to the late Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman in various cartoons and video games, making him the definitive voice of the Dark Knight. A billboard advertises a show called After Hours with Conroy, sporting the tag line "the voice of Gotham's night."

Five Nights at the Zoo

In the zoo level in Chapter Two, you'll pursue the Penguin as Batman and Catwoman. Throughout the abandoned zoo are animatronic polar bears, relaying information about the zoo exhibits. The last bear you find is promoting a polar bear feeding job, where "our bears can't wait to have you for dinner," before listing a disclaimer stating no responsibility for anyone getting mauled or eaten by the bears, making a reference to the security job you have to take on in Five Nights at Freddy's.

We're all trying to find the guy who did this

Scattered throughout Gotham are old school diners, and you can walk into a variety of different exchanges between the people in there. One of the exchanges involves a food challenge where the server says, "If you can eat fifty-five burgers, fifty-five shakes, and fifty-five tacos, we'll ask you to leave."

This is a reference to the I Think You Should Leave sketch, where a pay-it-forward scheme at a drive-through goes horribly wrong.

From one merchant to another

Bat-Mite, a Batman superfan, runs the shop in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. He's got plenty of funny lines, but one of them is a reference to Resident Evil 4's iconic merchant. Bat-Mite starts to say his iconic line in a deep voice, "What're you buy--," before remarking on how hard it is to do the voice, and how he doesn't understand how the merchant does it.

Risky Business

Alfred gets a standout scene referring to Risky Business early on in the story, dancing in the iconic pink dress shirt and underwear in the Wayne Manor, before answering a call from Batman. For an old butler, Alfred still has some moves.

Bat-Mite is a Weeb

Bat-Mite's store is decorated with posters of iconic anime, but with Bat-Mite featured instead of the original characters. There's a ton of posters, including those for One Piece, Akira, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more. While Bat-Mite should probably expand his horizons, he does have solid taste in anime.

Jurassic Plant

During the Poison Ivy boss fight section that pits the heroes against the Snapdragon, there is a brief cutscene where the beast's two heads snap at each other in a clear remake of the Raptor's snapping at each other in Jurassic Park during their entrance into the kitchen.

Michael Caine Posts

Alfred has a line referencing a viral social media post from actor Michael Caine, who portrayed Alfred in the Nolan movie trilogy. Alfred in the game says the meme tweet verbatim, "Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up. Batman Begin."

Parody News Orgs

Gotham is home to a variety of news outlets, some of which are clearly based on real organizations. GNN, Gotham Globe, and BGC--CNN, Boston Globe, NBC--all take inspiration from their real-world counterparts for their logo designs as well.

Miller and Moore Attorneys at Law

A law firm in Gotham makes a reference to two iconic names from comics, Frank Miller and Alan Moore. Both have made significant contributions to comic books, including some of the most iconic adventures the Caped Crusader has gone on. The Dark Knight Returns is one of Miller's most iconic Batman stories, with Moore writing another timeless classic, The Killing Joke.

Lego Stage Shows

There are a few parody billboards throughout Gotham advertising parody versions of real-world musicals. There is Bats, a Man-Bat play, using the same font and style as the Cats musical, and Les Minifigures, a reference to Les Misérables. Gotham is full of parody billboards for all sorts of stuff, so keep an eye out while exploring.
