Of course, there are some skeptics out there who don't believe that the game is as good as many believe, and to that, I give them a handy list of reasons why Crimson Desert deserves to be known as a great RPG in the modern era of gaming. The first reason is that you can, indeed, pet the cat and the dog.

7 Freedom to Explore

Go Where You Want

I'm not saying that a massive open world is necessary in a great RPG, but it certainly helps, and the world of Crimson Desert is pretty big. Not only that, you are free to explore to your heart's content.

From the early hours of the game, you are free to run around the world, discover puzzles, fight enemies, and find hidden secrets. There's so much to do in this game that it is extremely easy to get sidetracked and ignore the main story for hours.

This is part of what makes Crimson Desert so great. You don't need to focus on the main story to have fun, and the fun comes from interacting with the environment.

6 No Hand Holding

One thing that has bugged a lot of players in recent years is the way that games treat everyone like a child by holding their hand and guiding them through the game. Not often does a game come out that simply gives you an objective and lets you figure it out.

Crimson Desert holds your hand in the earliest hours to help you get your bearings, but after that, you are left on your own, only being given guidance when necessary.

You don't have yellow paint telling you to climb a specific ledge or an obvious sign telling you to destroy the block. You are free to climb a mountain to reach your objective, or take the more obvious path.

5 Tons of Detail

It's the Details That Matter

Have you looked around in Crimson Desert? Not in the world itself, but at the smaller details of your actions in said world? When you take a moment to look around, you see things you'd never expected.

For instance, you can freeze chunks of ice in bodies of water. More so, you can use fire to melt said ice. On top of this, if your pet is standing on a chunk of ice, it can freeze solid.

There are a ton of details like this that show that Pearl Abyss paid attention to the smaller things in Crimson Desert, and it makes the game all the better.

4 Pet Companions

You Have to Have Pets

Animals have become a bit of a staple in modern RPGs, and it feels weird if they aren't around. There are even entire groups of people who want to know if you can pet the dog in any game they play.

Not only can you have animal companions in Crimson Desert, but they follow you around, and they pick up loot. While they aren't necessary, they make the experience much better.

Something that makes it even better is that you can have up to 30 animal companions. Of course, you can only have one out at a time, but that just means you need to change them out regularly.

3 World Scale

It's Substantial

Let's jump from looking at the finer details to looking at the world itself and the scale of it. Across the map, there are five major regions, with the first of them being Hernand.

Normally, you'd expect these regions to feel empty, almost like nobody exists in them, but Crimson Desert delivers on the scale of the world by filling it with life. Not only that, but the scale of combat matches the world.

When you take over a location, you have to fight tooth and nail to capture it, taking out tons of enemies in the process before taking on their leader. The scale of the world and how well it was filled mark this RPG as one of the greats in this day and age.

Look For Them

It is terrible when an open world RPG feels empty, and clearly Crimson Desert is not empty, as the previous list entry confirmed this, but hidden secrets also make the game great.

There are multiple hidden secrets scattered around the world that you can easily gloss over and not pay attention to. For instance, the quest to obtain the Frostcursed armor can be completely ignored, and I ignored it for some time.

During a mission, I took a side path and randomly discovered a chest with an elk hood in it. This RPG unlocks that sense of discovery that many gamers had when they were children playing their first RPG, and it is fantastic.

1 Not Correct, but Complete

The Puzzle is Solved

Crimson Desert felt a bit lackluster to me until I started solving the game's numerous puzzles, and I realized that there is room for player interpretation in their completion. At that moment, I fell in love with it.

While completing one of the puzzles, I used my pot to absorb a stone block, and then dropped it to get it out of a room. It was clear that there was a way that the puzzle was meant to be solved, but I solved it in what felt like an unconventional way.

Then I realized that there are many puzzles that have multiple means of reaching the same solution, and it shows how much freedom of interpretation you have when completing tasks in the game, and that is what marked Crimson Desert as great in my book.
