While it might not be for everyone, there's certainly something special about traversing the Boston Commonwealth as the Sole Survivor in Fallout 4. Although there are other RPGs out there that also pit you against insurmountable odds, few feel as threatening as this title. Not only because of the setting, but also due to a few other elements that can take you by surprise.

Whether it is a feral ghoul with its unpredictable behavior, a crazed Super Mutant, the consequences of constant radiation exposure, or even traveling too far before you're ready, there's always something to keep you on edge.

Exploring the Wasteland for Extended Periods has Consequences

While exploring the Boston Commonwealth, there are many dangers you'll have to deal with in order to survive. Whether it is a rabid Yao Guai, a murderous faulty robot, or even raiders, death is always lurking around the corner. And to make matters worse, you also have to constantly worry about the environmental conditions and the impact they have on your health.

Having a strong sense of adventure is great, but it can often come at the cost of your maximum health capacity. So, if you're not careful, you can start losing valuable health points due to the aggressive radiation scattered across the land. I'd say this detail is probably the opposite of some of Fallout 4's relaxing wasteland features.

7 Feral Ghouls

They Can Be Extremely Deceiving

The process of becoming a ghoul has been explored and covered somewhat extensively between the games and the TV series. However, even then, there are still many mysteries around their feral state and the unpredictability behind it. Ghouls are dangerous in any state if they wish to be, but once they become feral and lose the last ounce of humanity within them, that's when the real trouble starts.

One of the most dangerous things about Feral Ghouls is that they can play dead for long periods. You might be walking through a deserted area thinking you're safe, and all of a sudden, what seemed like a dead body can come to life and start attacking you. Nightmare fuel, for sure. That said, there are some really strong Fallout 4 builds that you can create to maximize your chances, even when pitted against the worst possible odds.

6 The Glowing Sea

An Absolute Nightmare of an Area

The Glowing Sea in Fallout 4 is, at least to me, the game's equivalent to Elden Ring's Caelid. It's just one of those areas that feels off from the moment you set foot in them. And while you should never judge a book by its cover, in this particular case, the dangerous atmosphere of the Glowing Sea is a direct reflection of what you can encounter there.

Now, I'm not bashing this area—not in the slightest. In fact, I consider the Glowing Sea to be one of the reasons why Fallout 4 is addictive. It just adds so much variety to the game and raises the stakes considerably when you're exploring it. 5 Legendary Mutations

Some Enemies are Much Tougher to Kill

It should come as no surprise to anybody, that, with radiation levels so high, there are creatures that have not only overdeveloped, but can also mutate mid-fight. This is particularly true for the Legendary versions of various enemies spread throughout the wasteland. The first time I witnessed a Legendary mutation myself, I couldn't believe how well-though that mechanic was, and how terrifying it felt to be surprised by it.

Although a mutation might be more of a problem with some enemies than others, it remains a feature that further pushes the envelope in terms of delivering a rewarding combat experience. 4 Suicider Super Mutants

Crazed Kamikazes with Nothing to Lose

Super Mutants are tough to deal with from the get-go. Not only are they extremely strong, but they are also quite imposing and terrifying. If you add to that the fact that there are some variants that have no regard for their lives or wellbeing and will charge at you while holding a Mini-Nuke, the entire board changes.

Suicider Super Mutants are the kamikazes of the wasteland, and if you're not careful, you'll be sent back to your last save file, most likely in bits and pieces.

3 Regional Difficulty

Venturing Too Far Into the Wrong Places Can Be Deadly

As opposed to a few other RPGs and titles with a similar concept of survival, Fallout 4 doesn't treat enemy level scaling as proportionately as you'd think. Sure, some enemies are designed to give you a proper challenge without overwhelming you, especially in the early stages of the story. However, since it's an open-world, you can venture anywhere you want. And while that sounds like a nice thing to have, freedom sometimes comes at a cost.

If you venture too far South, for example, there's really nothing stopping you from encountering enemies that are way beyond your level. In those cases, survival is nearly impossible, and the experience can become frustrating. That said, exploring beyond your abilities can also be a good thing, as you'll likely find some of the best random encounters in Fallout 4.

2 Crippled Limbs

A Maimed Body Just Doesn't Work the Same

Since it's a survival game, it's no surprise that Fallout 4 penalizes you for not being careful or thinking that your body is immune to damage. This is where the crippled limb mechanics come into play, and I personally love them, as they make everything feel much more realistic.

Crippled legs, for example, will prevent the Sole Survivor from being able to run and even slow their walking pace. And since you're in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, being able to move freely is key to staying alive and well.

A Fun Challenge for Those With the Patience For It

Last, but not least, there are diseases in Survival Mode. For those who are not familiar with this game mode, it's rather straightforward. As opposed to Normal Mode, in Survival Mode, resources are scarce, there's no manual or autosave, and ammo has weight, which forces you to be wiser about what you're carrying unless you want to become over-encumbered. Not to mention that falling ill will also greatly impact your experience.
