Here are 10 locations in Fallout 4 that are incredibly disturbing and horrifying once people delve into the settings' hidden lore due to them being the site of gruesome events or connected to tragic characters that had their lives forever changed by Fallout's merciless world and villains.

8 Swan's Pond

More Than Meets the Eye

Early on in the game, players probably ventured through the ruins of central Boston and stumbled upon the remains of Boston Public Garden, only to go near Swan Boats and immediately get killed by a massive, gray Super Mutant Behemoth wearing the Swan Boat as armor.

Now this Super Mutant Behemoth may seem to be just another Super Mutant living in the Commonwealth, but if players kill the Behemoth and explore the nearby pond, they'll eventually find handwritten Experiment Logs written by a member of the Institute named Edgar Swann.

These Logs detail Swann's horrific transformation from a normal human into the Behemoth using an experimental version of the Forced Evolutionary Virus, with Swann eventually losing most of his mental capacity and being released into the Commonwealth by the Institute as a failed experiment that kills anyone who gets near his pond.

7 Suffolk County Charter School

South of Boston's Hyde Park, players will discover the ruins of the Suffolk County Charter School, which is now home to a peculiar group of pink Feral Ghouls that can only be found at this location.

Fallout is no stranger to featuring the ruins of pre-war schools, but Suffolk County Charter School is especially disturbing as this school and its many lower-income students were immorally used as test subjects for Vault-Tec.

Students and staff at the school were restricted to only eating a disgusting pink paste that was designed to have a shelf life of over 100 years, which led to consumers becoming increasingly sick and aggressive and their skin changing to a bright pink hue.

6 East Boston Preparatory School

A School's Nightmarish Legacy

A bit north of the RobCo Sales & Service Center, players will find the ruins of the East Boston Preparatory School, but unlike the Suffolk County Charter School, this school is not abandoned or home to Feral Ghouls.

Instead, this school is now home to a ruthless gang of raiders led by a man called Judge Zeller who transformed the religious school into a place to torture kids and young travelers in order to turn them into raiders fearfully loyal to himself.

Zeller would specifically burn the soles of people's feet, remove teeth, feed people rats, and beat them until they signed Blood Contracts which swore to serve Zeller until death, making this possibly the worst fate a school could ever have.

Theme parks like Disney World are regarded as some of the happiest places on Earth, full of entertaining rides and iconic characters that bring to countless kids and adults, but what happens to these sort of locations when a nuclear apocalypse wipes out most of the human population and civilization overall?

Fallout 4's Nuka-World expansion strove to answer this question with the titular western Massachusetts theme park, Nuka-World, which has since become a haven for raiders, slavers, rude robots, and a plethora of violent, mutated creatures including the unique Gatorclaws.

However, post-apocalyptic Nuka-World wasn't a haven for scum and villainy, as it was originally a hub for peaceful traders and Ghoulrillas. If people talk to Jack Cabot and access the House's main terminal, players will discover that the Cabot family is over 400 years old after his archaeologist father, Lorenzo Cabot, discovered the ruins of a mysterious alien Ubar civilization in the Arabian Desert and placed an alien headpiece on his head giving him immortal blood and telekinesis.

The ancient alien headpiece began to drive Lorenzo insane, forcing his family to place him deep underground in the asylum and extract his blood to make them immortal but if players release Lorenzo, his mind will be completely taken over by the headpiece, resulting in the near 500-year-old man being forced to kill his family.

3 University Point

Near University Point, the remains of Massachusetts Bay University, players may encounter a lone fridge and hear a boy pleading for help to get out of the appliance.

Once people free the boy, named Billy, from the fridge, they'll discover that Billy was actually a kid in 2077 who trapped himself in the fridge when the bombs dropped, resulting in him becoming a Ghoul and being trapped in the cramped appliance for about 200 years.

Most kids fear being in the dark alone, so I can't imagine how Billy felt for those 200 years or the nightmares he suffered through hearing his home burn outside and the countess deaths and monsters that popped up following the Great War.

It's well-known in the Fallout universe that most pre-war Americans hated the Chinese due to the Sino-American War between Communist China and the United States over the Chinese invasion of Alaska in 2066 and acquisition of the world's few remaining oil reserves.

This is evident in many remaining pre-war documents and technologies, such as Liberty Prime, but in Fallout 4's Natick Banks, players who read nearby terminals will learn that this hatred of the Chinese went beyond the faraway battlefronts.

Here it's discovered that the U.S. government established Chinese concentration camps during the Sino-American War, rounding up any American citizens of Asian descent and shipping them off in inhumane camps where many were tortured and killed, forcing many Asian families to hide in attics like one found in Natick Banks.

1 Vault 75

If players travel to the Malden Middle School and explore its ruins, they'll eventually discover Vault 75, which was built beneath the school but has since been abandoned aside from Gunners exploring the Vault.

Vault 75's terminals explain that the Vault was originally marketed to be a safe haven for Malden staff, students, and their families in the event of a nuclear detonation, but when the bombs did drop in 2077, only six children and 10 adults made it to the Vault.

Every adult was then executed and subsequently incinerated by Vault Security staff, while the surviving children were trained to eventually explore and help survivors in "Uptopland" when they reached age 18, with those who were smart and obedient joining the Vault's research team while others either had their genes harvested or were executed following graduation.
