Fighting games might be one of the most well-known video game genres out there. Thanks to games like Super Smash Bros. and the decades-long history of arcade games, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't tried a fighting game at least once. They don't exactly offer a lot on the surface. You beat up your friends, unlock the important stuff, and move on with your life.
For those who are committed to what these particular games offer, though, there's plenty to do and see that'll keep them coming back for more. This can range from just wanting to play every single character, or the sheer ridiculous request for some achievements.
10 Most Iconic Super Moves in Fighting Games
When these moves come out, the hype isn't far behind.
While it's true that not many fighting games take too long if you just want to unlock your favorite character and play as them for a bit, some truly do test the patience of the ones that want to leave no stone unturned before turning a game off. Let's look into some of the games that have staggering-long lengths behind the content they offer.
Playtimes are subjective and change from person-to-person. For a bit more objective approach to this list, I'd like to give credit to the dedicated people at HowLongToBeat.com for their averages. Many of their averages will be used in this list to give a ballpark of how long these games have taken players.
8 Mordhau
Between 101–120 Hours for Completion
Mordhau is one of the more unique games on this list because it's a medieval fighting game of all things, and multiplayer to boot. Despite it being a debut indie title from Triternion, it's often praised for how well the game feels and responds to quick-thinking in its war-based setting. There aren't many active players anymore, though, which makes it hard to recommend these days.
The dwindling player activity for this game may be for the best. If you were to try and get all of Mordhau's achievements, it'd take you a stupidly long amount of time. Thanks to the type of game Mordhau is, most of the achievements deal with getting kills in specific ways. Killing 10 enemies in a row without dying is fair enough, but good luck with getting 5 kills on a ladder of all things. That'll cost you several hours just attempting that for sure.
7 Mortal Kombat (2011)
163 Hours Average for Completion
After being around for 19 years, Mortal Kombat got a brand-new reboot with a brand-new game. Players rejoiced as the series was brought to new heights and relevancy with an incredibly fun game that has been seen as one of the best in the series.
The bare minimum of what's needed to clear 2011's Mortal Kombat isn't too demanding. Just 8 hours of your time should be enough to get you through everyone's story mode and then some. So why is it taking over a hundred hours to complete this game? Easy. Trophies.
There are 59 Trophies for Mortal Kombat 2011. It's a large number, but thankfully, a lot of them are tied to simple gameplay milestones. Some will come naturally, like getting through every single tutorial. Others, like performing fatalities with every single character, clearing the Towers, and spending koins take a fair bit of time. Still, it's not the worst Platinum Trophy out there.
You might want to get used to trophies and achievements being the biggest issue on this list. Trust me, it's a trend.
6 Street Fighter V
171 Hours Average for Completion
There aren't many fighting games with a rocky start like the one Street Fighter 5 had. Of course, the game got better with its updates and DLC that brought back everything it was missing. These updates also moved the needle in terms of the game's long-term difficulty. Yes, I'm once again talking about how SF5's Platinum Trophy is pretty hard to get.
Street Fighter 5 doesn't do anything too extravagant with its trophies, except for maybe having a chunk deal with playing online, but it's how long some of them take that's the biggest problem. Reaching Player Level 200, completing 300 Ranked Matches, beating Survival Mode on extreme, and getting one million FM are only some of the large milestones you'll have to chase to even get close to Platinum. Street Fighter V certainly doesn't pull its punches on making you work to put it down for good.
10 Best Fighting Games Still Stuck on Older Systems
Video game developers have done a great job of bringing retro fighting games to modern platforms, but a few are still trapped on older systems.
5 WWE 2K22
174 Hours Average for Completion
Out of all the fighting games with so much to offer that you can put hundreds of hours into it, I don't think many of you expected to see WWE 2K22 on this list. Surprisingly, WWE 2K22 is jam-packed with content. So much to see and do, and plenty of things to unlock if you dare to play everything it has to offer.
Anything unexpected can cause your playtime to increase dramatically in any game, but the objectives in WWE2K22's Showcase can be easy to forget or tricky to execute. That can keep you from unlocking your favorite Superstar or Attire easily. On top of that, the MyRise and MyGM campaigns are considerably lengthy.
The biggest thing that keeps a lot of people invested is, once again, the achievements. With finishing first in MyGM rankings, signing legends, and having a 5-star match all required to increase your gamerscore, you might be wrestling with the best for a while.
4 Super Smash Bros. Brawl
215 Hours Average for Completion
Image Via NintendoFinally! An entry that doesn't triple the playtime through trophies and achievements! Leave it to Masahiro Sakurai to make a game where it naturally rewards players overtime, no extra strings attached. Of course, what you can get out of Super Smash Bros. Brawl depends on your end goal from the start. There are easy-to-follow paths to get characters through association, stages won't take too long to unlock, and only six Assist Trophies are unlockable. If you want to get absolutely everything, though, there are plenty of meat and potatoes for you.
There's the Challenge Board that'll really test what you're made of, especially if you've got a North American copy of Brawl. The PAL version was a bit more lenient on what could be checked off with free check-boxes. NA players would have to do the harder challenges with or without the glass-breaking Golden Hammer. There are also nearly 600 trophies and 700 stickers to collect, if you dare to be a real completionist about things. Good luck and Godspeed to you if you do! Or did! You've got my respect.
3 Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker
222 Average Hours for Completion
Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker has to be the most intriguing Naruto game out of the lot. It's a fully online PvP Naruto game that groups players up into teams of four and lets them duke it out with everything you'd expect from the famous anime series. Diehard fans seem to enjoy it, judging from the player ratings it has. It also has achievements, and that's where this live-service game goes from a fun way to beat up your friends to a great way to waste possibly over two-hundred hours of your life.
If you decide to go for Naruto to Boruto's Platinum Trophy, you'll need to win 100 matches of every mode available, every playstyle available, clear every VR mission, and also win 1,000 matches online. That's just the worst ones. The thousand-victories trophy is a bit of a bold move from the developers, considering not only did Shinobi Striker not review well, but it's also not exactly stable. It crashes frequently, and it's not uncommon to run into hackers that will wipe your team out just because they can.
10 Weirdest Fighting Game Characters
If you love the underdog, then you owe it to yourself to check out this list of delightfully absurd, powerhouse fighting game characters!
2 Killer Instinct (2013)
409 Average Hours for Completion
Similar to Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct also got a brand-new reboot just two years later. Unlike MK, though, KI suffered from the same rocky start SF5 did. It also improved overtime, and with its improvements came swaths of DLC characters. This sounds like a dream come true, especially for Killer Instinct fans who didn't have their favorite character before their late addition to the game. As always, though, these things come with a price.
Every season of new characters brought quality of life changes, but it also brought new achievements with every update. These tied into using the new characters exclusively, which meant those aiming to 100% this game would have to play every character a number of times. Going through Killer Instinct's campaigns could take thirty minutes for one run through at its worst. With a roster that big, it's easy to see how achievement or trophy hunting on Killer Instinct could take a lot of time. If you've managed this, you've also got my respect.
1 Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON
Your Mileage May Vary
Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost
This last game is really something special. It's a bit more of a subjective pick for this list than everything we've talked about so far, but I think it deserves it. The trophies aren't a problem here, they take about 50 hours to complete. There isn't a standard story mode either. So, what gives? What makes it that this game can take over 100 hours of your time? Its huge roster is how.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON is a port of an arcade game that features as many Gundam models as the developers could fit. No, take that amount you're picturing and make it bigger. No, even bigger. The roster is broken up into sub-menus by series. That's how many. When I first heard of this game, I said to myself, "The roster can't be that big." It is that big.
Not everyone will hop on Maxi Boost aiming to play as every single model and/or pilot ever. I know that. But there are all sorts of battles and missions to take on, with some inspired by the anime. Some also have unique win conditions to unlock even more content, and depending on what you came to the game for, you could end up dedicating 100 hours to it. If you want to experience everything with your favorite pilot or Gundam, or play as every single one in every mode because you love Gundam that much, it has hundreds of hours of content for you. Enjoy.
10 Fighting Games You Should Definitely Avoid
No matter how hard it is to make a fighting game, some things are just inexcusable.
