Relationships are one of the most important features of any life sim, and how they work takes up a lot of the gameplay on offer. Paralives adopted its own relationship system that differs from the usual number from -100 to 100 that many life sims use.

Paralives goes beyond it, and does a lot to simulate what real world relationships look like and how they work. Relationships and feelings towards other people are often nuanced, as people have different roles in many people's lives, even for the same person. An individual may be a mentor, a sibling, a friend, and a cooking buddy all within the same relationship. Feelings can be one-sided, and interactions can fail. This is all implemented through gameplay in Paralives, which makes relationships feel more natural in some fundamental ways.

8 Conversation Cards

Basic Interaction

The core of any Para's interaction with another Para is through relationship cards. These are the very basis of Para socialization, and only become available through dialogue and conversation. Strike up a conversation with a Para, and you'll find there aren't any interaction options, but after a few seconds their conversation bar will fill, and you'll have the option to select a specific action.

This makes conversation feel like it's flowing, and it's more give and take than lining up multiple interactions and watching them play out. You, as the player, feel more involved in the interaction as you react to and lead the way.

Set Your Chances of Success

Storyteller cards play a role in socialization as they set the difficulty of succeeding in tricky social maneuvers, but also give a heads-up when a memorable moment occurs between Paras.

Getting notified when something significant occurs isn't exactly natural, but forming deeper bonds through moments absolutely is. Another bonus is the difficulty, which is largely influenced by a Para's relationship with each individual Para they're interacting with, but is also influenced by the Storyteller you choose. You get to set the difficulty, and deal with the outcome that brings. Negative results aren't necessarily a bad thing either, and can have some surprising outcomes.

6 Vibe

The Vibes are Immaculate

Each Para has a vibe that informs their general demeanor. Vibes are selected by you in the Paramaker, or come with the Para if you choose a pre-made household.

The following Vibes are available:

  • Energetic
  • Gloomy
  • Jester
  • Overjoyed
  • Serious

Every interaction your Para will have will be influenced by their Vibe, and the conversation cards you get will be a direct result of them. For example, an Overjoyed Para will be able to make those around them happier. This is also a passive ability, but it's a good reflection of how people influence each other based on their attitude and demeanor. It's a great way to make interactions and chemistry between Paras more nuanced, and having it separate from personality traits makes for more complex characters.

5 Personality

A Combination of Factors

Personality also goes a long way in making relationship progression feel more natural. A Para's personality is the combination of their Vibes, Talents, Stats, and Lifestyle.

All these different categories work together to create unique Paras that respond to the world around them differently. This extends to social situations, where the different parts of a Para's personality determine the social cards you get, how they can influence the surrounding Paras, and the mood of the conversation. All these aspects mean that it's not only Paras that are nuanced, but every interaction between Paras has different factors working for and against them, creating relationships that are richer and change depending on the Paras involved.

4 Levels and Ranks

Adopt Different Roles

Rather than tracking relationship progression with a number, Paralives tracks them with ranks and levels. These can vary depending on the activities the Paras do together. For example, a Para could have a Baking Buddy relationship label for another Para, alongside Friend and Crush. Labels can be combined to create new Combo Labels.

It's important to note that these labels are one-sided, and show how that Para feels about the other. Your Para could have a one-sided crush and see them as an inspiration, while the other Para sees them merely as an acquaintance. This lets relationships evolve through interaction and experience, and ultimately makes them multi-faceted rather than just using a single number.

3 Bonded by Meaningful Moments

Grow Through Experience

Doing things together and creating experiences is what brings Paras together. People in real life develop bonds because of what they experience together, and this just makes Para relationships feel all the more natural. Rather than spamming interactions until the number reaches 100, Paras need to do things and experience life in order to develop their relationships.

This makes for richer relationships that have natural progression, and forms a history between two Paras. Meaningful moments and memories can also be formed in groups, creating these experiences that are significant for multiple Paras. I love having my Paras going out and experiencing the world, as it makes them more interesting characters and gives their relationships more nuance.

2 Group Activities

Group activities are so simple to initiate in Paralives. All you have to do is click and drag a box over the Paras you want to include in the group, and they'll begin to follow your lead.

Group activities mean a conversation bar that gets filled faster, and the opportunity for different kinds of activities and memories to be formed. This is also an opportunity for new kinds of relationship labels to form as a group dynamic develops. Group activities can be used for any activity, including hobby development, cooking, and skill progression. Doing things in a group allows members to give each other support, and results in faster skill progression than attempting something on your own.

All aspects of a Para's personality influence socialization, but the most important is the Social Perk. Social Perks inform how a Para interacts and how others respond to them. It also affects their mood when they socialize, as not every Para will feel better when socializing.

Social perks at the moment include:

While some of these Social perks, such as Good at Being Alone, may seem like a drawback when it comes to socialization, they all have their benefits, just like how introverts in the real world have their advantages. Paras who are Good at Being Alone have bonuses to relationships and skill development when they're around close friends.
