Few games have managed to deliver an experience with amazing storytelling, great combat mechanics, and interesting folklore, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This is a game that has tons of replay value and always has new surprises to delight players with. Before playing this title, I'd never even considered reading the books, or playing the previous installments of the franchise. But all that changed once I set foot on The Continent.
Some quests in the story are very straightforward, whereas others take a 180-degree turn and will leave you in shock. And there are a few others that, when replayed, offer a whole new perspective. They might not all deserve to be classified as the best quests in The Witcher 3, but they sure are more interesting the second time around. Please be aware that there are spoilers below.
8 The Whispering Hillock
The Wrong Call Can Have Dire Consequences
This is one of those quests where every little choice and detail matters more than you think. During this quest, you'll come across a tree spirit, and you'll ultimately have three different choices: kill it, release it before talking to the Ealdorman, or do so after you've talked to him. Once you've already played through this quest once, you're well aware of the consequences of each choice.
For those who don't remember, here's what happens—if you kill the spirit, the village of Downwarren will be spared, the Crones of Crookback Bog will take the orphans and eat them, and Anna (the Bloody Baron's wife), will go mad. If you free the spirit before talking to the Ealdorman, the orphans will survive, and Anna won't be turned into a water hag. However, Downwarren will be attacked. Lastly, if you talk to the Ealdorman before freeing the spirit, the orphans will be safe, Downwarren will be attacked, and Anna will be turned into a water hag.
7 Carnal Sins
The Least Suspicious Character Ends up Being the Culprit
Novigrad, like any other great city, has a lot of secrets and dangers lurking in the shadows of dark alleyways. The quest begins when Priscilla is attacked and Geralt accompanies Dandellion to the hospital to see her. There, the head doctor suggests she is not the first victim of the attacker and asks Geralt to investigate another victim's body at the morgue.
Long story short, the morgue's physician, Hubert Rejk, who initially helps you analyze the victim's body, is actually the culprit and reveals himself to be a vampire that you'll have to fight. Once you know this and replay the quest, every word that comes out of that foul creature's mouth is an insult to Geralt's intelligence. If you find it difficult to beat Rejk, you can try some of the best potions in The Witcher 3 to make your life easier.
6 A Towerful Of Mice
An Innocent Request Hides Ill Intentions
Malignant spirits are a daily occurrence on The Continent. Whether it is a Penitent, a Noonwraith, a Nightwraith, or any other incorporeal being, villagers always need to be on the lookout—especially considering that they can lie. Upon exploring Fyke Isle Tower, you'll encounter the ghost of Anabella, the former lord's daughter. She will ask you to bring her bones to her former lover, Graham, so he can bury them.
After you've completed this quest once, you'll know that you should, by no means, accept Anabella's request, because if you do, she will reveal herself as a Pesta, kill Graham, and spread disease across the land as soon as her curse has been lifted.
5 Possession
A Wild Goose Chase
Whether you love or hate the Skellige Isles, it's undeniable that exploring them is a blast and often yields handsome rewards. The region has inspired what is, to some, one of the best Gwent cards in The Witcher 3, although not the best, for sure. The Possession quest is interesting, but once you've completed it once, there are some elements about it that feel pointless.
You're originally led to believe that by recovering Brokvar (Udalryk's family's sword), you'll be able to lift a powerful curse. However, when you're nearing the end of this quest, you realize that the curse is actually caused by a Hym. Don't get me wrong, the journey is still fun, but the quest for the sword does lose some of its charm when you have full knowledge of the situation.
4 Lilac And Gooseberries
Talking To The Devil Himself Can Go Unnoticed
For me, this was probably one of the biggest "oh, wow", moments when I replayed The Witcher 3 for the first time. During the Prologue, when Geralt is asking about Yennefer's whereabouts, you sit down and talk to a merchant in White Orchard to describe her scent of Lilac and Goosberries. He seems polite and interesting—and after all, how could he not be if he's the Devil himself?
That merchant you strike up a conversation with is no less than Gaunter O'Dimm, who, if you recall and have played the Blood and Wine DLC expansion, is the ultimate personification of evil in The Continent. It's amazing how you can be 4 feet away from the darkest being in existence, and only realize it during your second playthrough. There are other games like The Witcher 3 that play with a similar concept, but in my opinion, this title does it masterfully.
3 Family Matters
The Bloody Baron's Crimes Are Unforgiveable
When you arrive at Crow's Perch, the town seems like it's seen better days. You can feel the morale among the villagers is six feet under, and there seems to be no sign of future prosperity. And then, you meet the Bloody Baron, born Phillip Strenger, and everything makes sense. At first, he just seems like an ill-mannered man who is desperate to find his family. But the more you dig, the worse it gets.
8 Most Morally Bankrupt Decisions You Can Make in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Create Geralt's darkest (and most out of character) moments in the Witcher 3 with these decisions.
Once you've played through his questline once, you know of all his crimes, his violent nature, and his role in the creation of the Botchling—there's no coming back from that. The fight against the Botchling isn't what I'd call the ultimate challenge, but I've always wondered if it would have been made easier if I'd had access to the Witcher Gear Sets from the beginning of my first playthrough.
2 The Nithing
Love Can Often Trump Reason
It's no secret that love sometimes makes people do crazy things. And "The Nithing" quest is the perfect example of it. Focusing on Lothar, in the region of Skellige, he tells Geralt someone's put a Nithing in front of his home, cursing him. Geralt can either turn the curse on the caster, or get the caster to remove the curse—the only problem is finding out who the caster is.
In a nutshell, Geralt finds out that the caster is Jonna, Lothar's former lover, whom he abandoned to marry another woman. Once you have this information, you can either choose to turn the curse on Jonna and kill her, or let Lothar sacrifice his beloved life with his new family to be with Jonna, so she removes the curse. In either case, someone suffers. But in my experience, replaying this quest with a level head and the knowledge of Jonna's motivations, makes the decision much harder.
1 Scenes From A Marriage
One of the Most Tragic Quests in the Game
This list would not be complete without the tragic story of Olgierd von Everec and his late wife, Iris. "Scenes From a Marriage" is a main quest in the Hearts of Stone DLC, and, in my opinion, one of the best in the entire game thanks to its atmosphere and the narrative it presents to players. Geralt is tasked to recover the rose Olgierd once gave his wife, but it's no easy task.
Once you've replayed the game and reach this quest a second time, everything feels more grim. Every word, every item, every corner of the von Everec Estate carries a whole new level of emotional weight. If at any point you're struggling too much at the Estate, finding the best silver swords in the game will surely help.
