Now that Deltarune Chapter 5 is here, we're closer to the end than we are to the beginning. Chapter 6 and 7 are looming ever closer with an estimated 2027 release date for the former, and the Weird Route skipping straight to the latter. Whether we're ready for it or not, Deltarune won't be waiting much longer.
Because of how close we are to the finale, there are plenty of moments in Deltarune Chapter 5 that lead up to the ending narratively. At the same time, Chapter 5 was pretty sparse on deeper lore details, since it's the calm before Chapter 6's storm.
Let's take a brief look at some moments in Chapter 5 that might play a bigger role in the next chapters than we think at first glance.
9 The White Feather
Get Good. You'll Need It.
The White Feather is one of the most fun additions to Deltarune yet. Once the party takes it from the shrine, they unlock the ability to switch perspectives. It turns tons of rooms into platforming sections. You're made to ACT fast by ordering Susie and Ralsei to use their specific moves to activate different platforms. There's even special enemies, bullet patterns, and bosses to encounter in this mode.
This new playstyle required a lot of programming, so most likely, we're going to use it in the future. It'd be a complete waste if we never used it again. We've kept the climbing abilities after Chapter 4, as well. We've had two bosses in a row that have required climbing in Chapter 4 and even after in Chapter 5. It's highly likely that there will be more platforming challenges, especially in important moments, from now on. You better brush up on your skills.
8 Weird Route's Chapter 6 Skip
Let's Make This Quick, I Guess!
Playing through the normal route of Chapter 5 first, then tackling the Weird Route, was a pretty surprising experience. I was wondering what would happen after Noelle and Kris' encounter in Noelle's room, but I wasn't expecting Noelle to dive right into what we were peer pressuring her into. (That pun wasn't intended. I swear.)
I took my time at the festival, already thinking I was going to have to make my way through the Flower King Dark World again, when Noelle suggested we try to go to the other side of the lake. Little did I know that it would make us skip to Chapter 7's "side B." Talk about speedrunning things!
Since we know next to nothing about Chapter 6, let alone Chapter 7, it's hard to say what awaits Kris and Noelle in the future. All we know is there's a Side B to Chapter 7, which is both intriguing and terrifying because of Toby Fox's insistence that Deltarune will have one ending. How does a Side B not have the same ending? These questions are going to haunt me for a while.
7 Asgore's Documents About a Past Dark Fountain
The Wrench Thrown into the Gears of Almost Every Theory
Since Chapter 4 showed Asgore maintaining Carol's mansion and the fact that he was in possession of a Black Shard, a lot of us thought Asgore was involved in the plan with Kris and Carol.
After Chapter 5, however, we know now that Asgore possesses a Black Shard as his one piece of evidence for the existence of the Roaring Knight and the Dark Worlds, after a Dark World appeared in the past. He's documented it as best he can, as well.
The Shelter's a Dark World that could have been trapped under the earth for years. This information from Asgore deepens several mysteries. The way his monologue to Kris is framed might imply Dess was straight up killed, instead of lost. The Knight could also be much older than we think, instead of being Dess herself. Asgore's findings definitely tie into the truth we'll find out at Deltarune's climax. Until then, we're just going to be driven mad by coming up with theories as to what's going on.
6 Sans' Punch Card
"Don't Forget."
During the festival, you have to go and get ice cream from Sans. Both the normal and the weird route require it before meeting Noelle at the beach. On both routes, Sans asks Susie to fill in a punch card, where she draws herself and Noelle, and Ralsei or Kris depending on the route you play.
This ties into a crude drawing Sans has in Undertale that has "don't forget" written on it. It ties into the many things that imply that, somehow, Sans found himself in Undertale, but he originally came from Deltarune.
We've got no idea how this happened, though fans have plenty of decent guesses. It's hard to say if Deltarune will reveal what happened to Sans in detail. Detarune's got its own mysteries to solve, but it could happen in the background. It could happen in a way that leaves fans to connect the dots even further. We've got to have a reason for Sans' reality-hopping if it's true, right?
5 Kris Allowing Asgore's Kidnapping
Do You Ever Assist in Kidnapping Your Parents?
Like I said before, Kris is involved in whatever plot is going on with Carol and the Knight. That means they're aware of the kidnappings within them before they happen.
Depending on what the plan is, they either made the fountain in Flower King to kidnap Agore altogether, or at least knew he was planned to be taken in advance. With that said, Kris could have stopped the kidnapping from happening at certain points in Chapter 5.
What helps with this idea is that between the two fountains we know Kris has made so far, Asgore was taken successfully. Toriel was kept safe within a gachapon ball during Chapter 3.
There's an argument to be made that the soul could have stopped them from making sure Asgore wouldn't be taken by the Knight, but Toriel's gachapon ball implies that Asgore could have been kept just as secure if Kris wanted him to be. Whatever the plan is, Kris needs Asgore to be at the center of it despite any attachments they have. That's kind of ominous, when you think about it.
4 The Talks Between Flowery and Ralsei
A Passive Prince No Longer
In Chapter 4, Susie gains a surprise mentor in the form of the Old Man. A lot of players, including me, hoped that Ralsei would get a mentor in the same vein soon after.
Like it or not — Ralsei certainly doesn't — Flowery fits this role very well. The way the flowers take advantage of their one day to be themselves to the end, even if it's pretending to be something they're not, shows a deeper side to Ralsei and his servitude to the prophecy.
Flowery also opens up a can of worms about Ralsei that the fluffy boy hasn't addressed. What does Flowery mean by saying Ralsei is an impossibility? Why is there a lingering implication that Ralsei is pretending to be something he's not? Whatever it is, we'll find out, and we'll find out soon enough.
3 Susie Staying in Castle Town
Spelling Future Tragedy No Matter What
At the end of Chapter 5, we walk Susie home, and the "home" in this instance is Castle Town. Not exactly a bad thing on its own, but considering how much Susie's character arc leans into the negatives of escapism, this might not end well.
There's a chance that to keep the balance between light and dark in check, we might have to seal the Castle Town fountain. Ralsei built rooms for Kris and Susie so Castle Town could be their home away from home, not their actual homes.
In Susie's defense, though, her living situation is heavily implied to be terrible. We have no idea what's happening with Susie, but Toriel getting embarrassingly drunk with Sans made her decide to stay far away from her and the Dreemurr household after it became a safe place for her to stay. Castle Town became her home because of all of that.
Either we'll have to say goodbye to Castle Town, or we'll find out about Susie's living situation in future chapters. Or both. Regardless, I'm going to cry, and you'll likely cry, too.
2 Pink Staying in Castle Town
Hang on, Are We Not Sealing This Fountain?
Chapter 5's secret boss is none other than Mad Mew Mew of Undertale fame. That's not an exaggeration, either. It's still Mettaton's ghost cousin possessing Mew Mew Kissy Cutie merchandise. This time, though, the merch she possesses is its own person.
Through the body and the ghost fighting for control, it's made very clear that "Pink" wants to stay a cat girl. The catch is, she can only live her dream in the Dark World while possessing the doll. Susie invites her to Castle Town so she can continue to live in her preferred body.
There's a lot of positivity behind Pink's story that plenty of players relate to. The fact that Pink is invited to Castle Town is one of the best reasons I have to think Castle Town will stick around after the story is over. We'd all be sad if her dream was crushed, even if the worlds were saved because of it.
1 The Last Words of the Flowers
"Thank You For Watching My Dream."
When the "humans" in Chapter 5 become flowers again, their last words are some variation of "Thank you for watching my dream." We're made to say goodbye to them because we can't recruit them for Castle Town, so these are powerful farewells of flowers who lived their dreams to the fullest. If you didn't get emotional about this, you don't have a soul.
These words are likely to be important when Deltarune Chapter 7 comes out, and the game is considered finished. In case you don't know, Deltarune came from a fever dream Toby Fox had in 2011. He had a dream about the ending to a game, and he made Deltarune to be that game. It will have that ending.
It's because of this fact that I know that these words are going to come back in some form when everything is done. Either they'll be thrown at us by Ralsei before we say goodbye forever, by Gaster after the credits roll, or by Toby Fox a day later on Twitter. No matter which way that these words come back in the end, we're going to sob and have the experience stay with us. I guarantee it.
