A Tribute to Insurgency and Six Days in Fallujah Developer Jeremy Faucomprez

Last month, the FPS community lost one of its brightest talents of the current generation of developers. On March 6th, Jeremy Faucomprez (aka Mxthe) passed away. He was most recently the senior game designer for tactical shooter Six Days in Fallujah.

Now, those close to Faucomprez have shared the cause of death as suicide, to bring awareness and help others suffering from similar challenges.

The details surrounding Jeremy Faucomprez's passing were revealed in a statement published by fellow game developer Michael Tsarouhas, who had worked closely with Faucomprez since 2012 in multiple projects.

In his 35 years, Jeremy Faucomprez built an illustrious career that spanned some of the most memorable shooter experiences in recent years.

Half-Life 2, Fallujah, and Mental Health

Faucomprez made a name for himself with the Underhell mod for Half-Life 2, a unique (even if unfinished) horror thriller that oscillates between all-out action and Silent Hill slow burn.

The quality of his work on Underhell was enough to land him a spot at New World Interactive, where Jeremy put his chops to good use in developing Insurgency, Day of Infamy, and Insurgency: Sandstorm. The latter is one of the most celebrated shooters in recent years, sitting at a Very Positive rating with over 130,000 reviews on Steam.

Following the overwhelming success at New World Interactive, Jeremy moved to Highwire Games at the urging of Michael Tsarouhas. There, he would become a senior game designer and help create what is my favorite recreation of urban combat in all of history.

A lot of elements come together to make Six Days in Fallujah a standout experience, but it is the mission design by Faucomprez that really brings everything together.

Despite the game currently having relatively few maps compared to other tactical shooters like Ready or Not, the environments are dynamic between missions, and no two sessions play out the same. Every door you walk through gets your heart pumping, the combat is an adrenaline rush, and the whole thing is a beautiful balance between chaotic action and scary moments of silence where you wonder when all hell will break loose again.

This is the first game since Star Wars: Republic Commando to get that feeling of being in the thick of it with only my squadmates to rely on, and I spent more hours than I'd like to admit running through every mission again and again.

Jeremy's final work, an entire new mission, will be included in the much-anticipated Spring update of Six Days in Fallujah. His passing adds a somber feeling to what is otherwise expected to be an exciting patch in the road to the game's release.

Six Days in Fallujah stands out among shooters because it tries to capture the psychological implications of intense urban combat and is built based on the experience of those who survived the battle. Many of those who made it out of Fallujah physically untouched would later succumb to mental health woes, a fate tragically shared by Jeremy Faucomprez.

Jeremy Faucomprez's legacy lives on through his amazing work on some of my favorite games. The battle against depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder took one of the biggest talents in the gaming industry much too soon.
