Last year at The Game Awards in Los Angeles, California, fans of the long-running Ace Combat series were treated to something special. It was here that the next installment in the franchise, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, was finally shown off to the public via a new announcement trailer.
Bandai Namco Quietly Announced A New Ace Combat Game During 30th Anniversary
Bandai Namco has finally confirmed that a brand-new Ace Combat game is in development, as part of the series' 30th anniversary celebrations.
Since then, however, we haven't heard much buzz about when we can expect to get back into our fighter jet cockpits, aside from confirmation that the game is expected sometime in 2026. Today, however, Pan European Game Information (or, PEGI, as we all know it) listed information about the game that could hint to some large reveals soon.
Most interestingly, of course, is that PEGI posted not only their (more mature) rating of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, but also a release date that... seems impossible.
Reading Into the Incorrect Release Date
On the official PEGI webpage for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the company posted "Pre-Release Dates" for the upcoming flight game, which happened to be 30 May 2026 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 alike. Of course, the 30th was yesterday, and Ace Combat 8 is still not in our hands, so we can officially rule out a shadow drop revolving around this date on PEGI's site.
What's interesting, however, is just the fact that this happened at all, as it more than likely hints to Ace Combat 8 and the team at Bandai Namco Aces Inc. becoming ever so closer to revealing the actual release date to us all. The timing of this happening all makes a lot of sense when you zoom out a bit, too.
Pan European Game Information (or, PEGI, as we all know it) listed information about the game that could hint to some large reveals soon.
It's just about June, which is one of the largest months in the gaming calendar for reveals and announcements. Between one of the various shows during the month, can we now expect Ace Combat 8 will get a confirmed release date at one of these events?
Since the game was originally shown at The Game Awards, it's reasonable to pinpoint Summer Game Fest as the most likely option for Wings of Theve news, as both shows are run by Geoff Keighley and are known at this point for dropping huge updates and reveals on a regular basis. SGF's live show is on 5 June this year, so Ace Combat fans can perhaps tentatively circle that date on their calendars and cross their fingers.
A Closer Look at Ace Combat 8's Rating
Perhaps even more interesting on this PEGI listing was the rating of the game itself. On the website, Wings of Theve is currently rated as PEGI 16, which would mark the first time in Ace Combat's mainline history that one of their games has been rated higher than the series' usual PEGI 12.
This is very interesting, as PEGI 16 is typically closest in association to M for Mature via the ESRB, while Ace Combat games of the past have been rated T for Teen by the ESRB. According to the PEGI website, this PEGI 16 rating is currently due to "Violence" and "In-Game Purchases." And before you write off Wings of Theve receiving a PEGI 16 rating simply for the in-game purchase aspect, it's important to note that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown was flagged for the exact same thing, but still wound up rated PEGI 12 regardless.
If we read into this a bit and the PEGI 16 rating is accurate (important note that the game is still "Rating Pending" from the ESRB), this all seems to imply that Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is now slated to be the most intense, violent, and mature Ace Combat title we've ever seen throughout the franchise's storied history. I don't know about you, but I'm now very intrigued to see what this all means for the series once we finally learn more concrete information about AC8.
