Sony has announced that its next major physical hardware release has been botched, with a delay without a release date, following the announcement that it would kill PlayStation discs and move to a digital-only model for its future systems.
The PlayStation 5 marks the end of an era for Sony, as it's the last model with a physical drive; disc drives will be discontinued in 2028. The writing has been on the wall for a long time, with Sony offering a digital-only PlayStation 5 when the console debuted in 2020, and with the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 seemingly skipping any kind of physical versions, despite the money they would bring in.
Sony went radio silent for a few days after announcing the disc, then its next social media posts discussed the FlexStrike, an upcoming arcade joystick for PlayStation systems set to launch next month. Those plans were canceled after Sony released an updated statement on the PlayStation Blog, which delayed the FlexStrike.
Sony Has Messed Up PlayStation FlexStrike Orders

The original plan was to launch the FlexStrike on August 6, alongside Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, but that isn't happening anymore. According to the PlayStation Blog, there has been an unexpected production delay for the FlexStrike, with no new release date to replace the old one. As all fans know, the FlexStrike could launch in the 2026 holiday season, maybe just in time for Grand Theft Auto 6.
The pre-orders for the FlexStrike opened on June 12, at a time when people thought the controller was launching in August. Thankfully, it should be easy to cancel the pre-order and receive refunds for those who don't feel like waiting for Sony to sort out a release date, especially if they wanted the FlexStrike for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, as it's the biggest fighting game of the year.

There have been many issues with video game hardware recently due to the ongoing memory crisis, which is driving up costs. However, this shouldn't affect the FlexStrike, as it's just a joystick and doesn't require any advanced tech. Sony claimed that the reason for the delay was the need to give the FlexStrike some "finishing touches", though it's unclear what this refers to exactly.
Maybe it's for the best that Sony is leaving the physical hardware business behind, if it's botching the release of a joystick a few weeks before launch. The company has been producing video game accessories for decades now, including some incredible controllers, like the DualSense, but a fight stick seems to be giving it some last-minute problems.
Fans are still outraged by the death of PlayStation discs and the end of video game ownership, with the industry at large coming down on Sony for destroying the second-hand market, and some international legislators filing cases against the company. There's a chance Sony could change its mind and introduce a physical model for the PlayStation 6, but so far it hasn't budged from its position.
Messing up the launch of its first physical product after the disc announcement is also a pretty bad look for the company, especially as it was connected to the release of one of August 2026's biggest games. The PlayStation 5 has been a great generation for Sony, but the company seems to be botching things hard at the end of its run and could poison the well for the PlayStation 6 when it's officially announced.
