Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the culmination of Square Enix’s ambitious remake project. The game will conclude the story of Cloud, Sephiroth, and the gang while introducing players to a world bigger than they’ve ever seen before. While there’s still some time before we’ll get to play Revelation, game director Naoki Hamaguchi has already shared a good deal of information about what to expect when the game launches in spring 2027.
A World Open From The Start
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth expanded the world introduced in Remake. Players went beyond the confines of Midgard into a vast continent and were able to explore the locales immediately surrounding the city and beyond. Revelation expands upon that further, offering players a true open world where they’ll be able to, from the very beginning, visit anywhere in the vast planet. Thanks to Cid and his Highwind, players will be able to fly anywhere on the planet, revisiting old locations and exploring new ones including Wutai and Rocket Town. To account for the Highwind’s immense size (and in a bit of an homage to that Fortnite game kids be playing all the time), the Highwind’s crew will seamlessly transition from the deck of the airship to the ground with fancy parachutes.
While a truly open world may be exciting to some players, it might give others pause. Too big a world with too much to do can get overwhelming. For Revelation, Hamaguchi has said the development team has streamlined the game into a tighter experience to combat some of the complaints of Rebirth’s overwhelming expansiveness.

Cid and Vincent Join The Fight
Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine are the last two characters to join the gang as permanent party members. Vincent has a deadeye and even deadlier claws, able to transform into beasts to deliver crushing blows. Cid makes use of his devastating spear attacks to launch into the sky and deliver death from above. Hamaguchi has indicated that all of the party members will wrap up their individual stories in Revelation. For Cid, Hamaguchi said his story has changed somewhat from the original, saying in an interview with Polygon, “players will get to see a new side of Cid that hasn’t really been shown before.”
Fresh FITS Change The Flow Of Combat
New in Revelation are FITS, which adds a fashion-based job system that seems reminiscent of the dressphere system from Final Fantasy X-2. With FITS, players will be able to further customize the abilities of their party members. With the black mage FIT equipped, for instance, Cloud will be able to augment his sword strikes with magical attacks. All party members will be able to use FITS and according to Hamaguchi, the game won’t drip-feed them throughout the game, but offer all of them at once when players unlock the system.
Queen’s Blood Takes Over Gold Saucer
Queen’s Blood is perhaps one of the most fun minigames introduced within the remake trilogy. In Rebirth, players were able to challenge characters all over the world to matches. In Revelation, however, Gold Saucer will become the central hub for the game, where players will be able to experience a whole new story centered around card battling. The snowboarding game from the original FF7 will also finally be available in Revelation; it famously occurs after the events that marked Rebirth’s conclusion.
Speaking of minigames, Hamaguchi said a dreaded one from Rebirth won’t be making a repeat appearance: squats and pullups. “From the development team’s perspective, since we did create two iterations of the exercising minigame, we feel like that’s probably enough,” Hamaguchi said in Polygon.
It’ll Play On All The Latest Hardware At Launch
Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth both launched on PlayStation, with other platform releases appearing later. Revelation, however, will launch on the latest platforms, Switch 2 included, simultaneously. Designing for all systems, even the less powered ones, hasn’t hindered Square Enix in its vision for the game. “From the very beginning, we design game assets and resources with a wide range of hardware specifications in mind, from lower-end systems to high-end ones,” Hamaguchi said in an interview with Automaton. “Because of that, moving to a multiplatform approach hasn’t imposed any limitations on our game design.”

Chadley’s Back To Fight The Weapons
Wherever you come down on Chadley, the Shinra researcher is back and still has a part to play in this last installment. He’ll set up a base in the Highwind, researching the Weapons the planet has called forth to combat Meteor. Hamaguchi hasn’t spoiled the exact shape the battles against the Weapons will take, but in interviews he’s indicated that the fights will be truly massive in scale. You’ll be able to fight Emerald and Ruby weapons, though how those fights go down, he won’t say. The underwater area from the original game where players first encounter Emerald weapon will also be in Revelation, but it’s not confirmed if the fight will happen there or elsewhere.
An Epic Ending
There’s been a lot of chatter about how the story of this trilogy will end. The introduction of multiverse chicanery, combined with how the game handled Aerith’s whole thing, rubbed Final Fantasy VII originalists the wrong way. Hamaguchi has said that despite some fan outcry, the original vision for the remake trilogy’s ending hasn’t changed and that he feels confident Revelation’s end will deliver on fan expectations.
