Laurence is an avid writer, gamer, and traveller with several years of journalistic writing experience under his belt. Having helped create a student-focused magazine at university, he is keen to reach the gaming community with his guides and game reviews.

Whether it's trudging through the world of Elden Ring, or grinding out raids in Old School Runescape, Laurence is always up for a challenge. However, in real life, his current challenge is learning how to speak Spanish and cooking authentic Mexican cuisine.

Windrose is a sprawling Open-world Survival game, full of grog, plunder and plenty of pernicious pirates. And these pirates, well, they’ll cut you down before you’ve developed your sea legs.

But what is a pirate without their ship? Don’t worry, because Windrose has you covered in this regard. There are plenty of ships here to fulfill your sea-bound fantasy. Tiny bobbing boats to gigantic timber titans await you on the high seas.

10 Games to Play if You Love Windrose

Fans of Kraken Express' Windrose should try out these 10 games due to their similarity in gameplay and world design.

Let’s take a look at each of the boats in Windrose, as well as their variants, and how they can be used effectively in combat.

Ships and Variants

Windrose Wharf

There are 4 main classes of ships that you’ll encounter in the Early Access of Windrose. However, that doesn’t mean there are only 4 ships in total.

The latter 3 classes of boat, the Ketch, Brig, and Frigate, each have 3 variants you can choose from. Your ship variant is going to hinge on how you decide to play the game.

For example, the generic stock variant is a bit of an all-rounder, with decent Hitpoints, cargo capacity and speed. In comparison, the Brethren variant is slower, with more cargo capacity, while the Blackbeard Variant is quicker, with higher speed, more firepower, and less cargo capacity.

If you just love sailing around, collecting resources and building stunning bases, while not focusing on combat, chances are the Brethren variant is for you. However, once you get stuck into the main story and learn the ins and outs of sailing combat, more often than not, the Blackbeard variant will generally be superior.

To build new ships and their variants, you’ll need to build a Wharf by the water. You will unlock this during the “How My Sea Adventure Began” quest.

Starting Boat

Windrose Little Boat

This little vessel really needs no introduction. You gain access to this boat right at the beginning of your journey in Windrose, as part of the starting quests.

You’ll use this to travel to the surrounding islands while you complete a few quests in relation to the next boat that we’re about to look at. However, as soon as you upgrade, there’s very little reason to return to this boat, unless your main vessel gets destroyed and you need a quick Fast Travel point to escape the gunfire!

The Ketch

Windrose Ketch Menu

Chances are, you’ll unlock your Ketch in your first few hours of gameplay, and it will be your ticket to leave those tiny little coastal islands behind and finally explore the huge open world!

To unlock this boat, you’ll have to complete the following quests:

  • I Need a Bigger Boat
  • Rescuing the Crew

Completion of these quests will allow you to hop on board the Ketch and double the speed of your previous dinghy. The Ketch can take you through a good portion of the game. However, at some point, you’ll need to upgrade.

The Brig

Windrose Brig

The Brig is your next major upgrade and will take you even further into the main story of Windrose. To unlock the Brig, you’ll need the following:

  • 1000 Piastre
  • Level 2 Brethren of the Coast
  • Access to the Foothills

Once you’ve given enough 100 favour worth of insignias and letters to the Brethren, either on Tortuga or their personal base, you’ll be able to purchase the ship designs for the Brig.

Avast, me hearties. Land Ahoy!

You can take this design to the Wharf at your base and construct your new ship there. To build the Brig, you’ll need the following resources:

  • 80x Copper Ingot
  • 120x Course Fabric
  • 40x Linen
  • 200x Nails
  • 200x Wooden Planks
  • 40x Rope
  • 40x Timber
  • 30x Shipwrights Tools

All of these materials can be found within the first 2 acts of the game, on the Coastal Islands and Foothills. The Shipwright’s Tools can be bought from the Brethren of the Coast.

Every variant requires the same amount of materials to build. If you want to change, simply dismantle your Birg and then use the materials to make yourself a new variant.

The Frigate

Windrose Frigate

If you thought the Brig was powerful, well, you’ve seen nothing yet. The Frigate is an absolute leviathan, hosting the most powerful cannons in the entire game. If you want to dominate the waters, well, this is your ticket, my friend.

To unlock the Frigate, you’ll first need the following:

  • 3000 Piastre
  • Level 4 Brethren of the Coast
  • Access to the Cursed Swamps

This is an extremely expensive ship, but its power is well worth the cost, that’s for sure. First, you’ll need to gather the cash by completing a good number of quests, looting dungeons or simply by destroying other ships.

Then you’ll need to unlock level 4 with the Brethren, which requires a total of 1000 reputation points. Many quests give letters of favour; you can get a huge amount of insignias simply by blasting other ships on the high seas. In your quest for cash, you’ll undoubtedly gain a lot of favour resources too.

Finally, you’ll also need to defeat Hands, the 2nd main boss of Windrose. This will unlock the Cursed Swamps, which have resources you’ll need to build the Frigate.

You can actually access the Cursed Swamps before completing the 2nd main boss; however, you won’t be able to use the resources gathered.

Once you’ve bought the ship design from any Brethren Provisioner, return to your Wharf with the following materials:

  • 120x Foothills Iron Ingot
  • 300x Nails
  • 240x Linen Fabric
  • 320x Wooden Plank
  • 80x Rope
  • 80x Tarred Fabric
  • 80x Tarred Planks
  • 160x Timber
  • 50x Shipwright’s Tools

Once more, this is even more expensive than the Brig, and it’ll take a long time to gather the required materials, but the grind is worth it.

The Blackbeard Variant of The Frigate is currently the only ship in the game to be able to fire 36-Pounder cannons, which are, naturally, the most powerful cannons available. While you sacrifice HP in order to use these, you should be able to defeat your enemies far quicker this way. Which is way more fun!
