Amazon's Luna Cloud Gaming service has just been added to Prime Video with nearly 100 games, as the company pivots away from competing for the console and PC gaming market—at least for now.
If you have a Prime Video subscription and live in the U.S. or the U.K., you'll now have access to the standard version of Luna, which includes many popular titles such as EA FC 26, Hogwarts Legacy, Dispatch, Fortnite, and a long list of party games that are perfect for living room gatherings.
Amazon Steers Away From PC and Console Gaming
If you're a Prime Video member, you'll now have access to a gaming tab that contains the full collection of GameNight party games, as well as an impressive amount of popular titles like Tomb Raider, Fallout, Death Stranding, and Skyrim, and while receiving nearly 100 games for no extra charge is down-right awesome, what's even more interesting is what Amazon's Gaming GM, Jeff Gattis, had to say on the matter.
In an interview with IGN, Gattis explained that Amazon is no longer trying to compete in the PC and console gaming market: "That market is extremely well served. One might even argue it's overserved today, where they're all just competing for the same customers, same players; the pie's not really growing. Let's not compete. They can have that at least for now."
Instead of competing in a market dominated by XBOX, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam, Amazon is focused on creating interactive entertainment experiences, where every TV show or movie that goes to market is accompanied by a video game, all tightly wrapped into one package.
Amazon's Luna Cloud Gaming service has just been added to Prime Video with nearly 100 games, as the company pivots away from competing for the console and PC gaming market.
Netflix has also been dipping its toes into this new area of entertainment, and now offers over 120 exclusive mobile games that can be downloaded onto your mobile devices and accessed through your Netflix account.
As Prime Video and Netflix begin carving out their own space in the video game industry, Gattis says he believes pairing TV shows and movies with video games into one entertainment package will become the new norm.
Gattis states, "I really think of the future, you'll see every TV or movie is going to have a video game story attached to it, whether that's a AAA game or just some sort of extension of the experience. I think it's going to be just part of how films and TV IPs go to market. And so for us, we want to take advantage of that. So you'll see us invest a lot more in making things alongside MGM properties or other Prime Video shows. Obviously Tomb Raider is coming out next year, there will be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video."
New Games Added Every Month
Luna Cloud Gaming is currently supported for Windows PC, Mac, Fire TV, Fire Tablets, Chromebook, select LG and Samsung smart TVs, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, with additional games, devices, and countries said to be revealed in the future. According to IGN's report, Amazon stated they plan to add new games every month.
Amazon's GM of Gaming says initially, Luna may have been marketed towards the wrong consumers, as console and gaming PC owners don't overly want to part with their beloved hardware, so instead, the company looks to focus on reaching the people who utilize mobile devices and TVs, "I think part of it was a product market fit problem where we were marketing clouds, and I mean collectively as an industry, at the wrong people, whereas I think there is a much broader audience that will probably never own a console or never own a gaming PC and never get a chance to play a lot of these games. That's where I believe in the cloud.”
