There's a new god of war. Amazon's Prime Video confirmed Wednesday that Ryan Hurst, best known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, will portray Kratos in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the PlayStation game God of War, which has already been confirmed for a two-season order at the streaming service.

God of War fans definitely know Hurst's work: He portrayed Norse god Thor in 2022's God of War Ragnarök. Hurst was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his performance in the game.

No other casting was announced, so the actors behind Atreus, Mimir, Freya, and the rest are still unknown.

Actor Christopher Judge famously brought the current video game version of Kratos to life in 2018, with PlayStation's soft reboot of the franchise through Santa Monica Studio. Judge took over for Terrence "T.C." Carson, who voiced Kratos during the Greek era of God of War games.

Here's how Prime Video describes Kratos in the TV show's official character description:

The titular character of the entire franchise, Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Over the course of ten wildly successful games, Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures and gods alike. In the process, he became an iconic character in pop culture, known for his stoic nature, unchallenged combat skills, and tragic past. In God of War, the live action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games as he deals with something new: his ten year old son Atreus. This father and son dynamic began a whole new chapter in the legendary series and will be the heartbeat of the new show.

Prime Video's God of War will adapt the story of the Norse-era slice of the franchise, which saw Kratos and son Atreus grappling with the death of Faye — Kratos' second wife and Atreus' mother — as they embark on a journey to fulfill her final wish that her ashes be spread from the highest peak of the nine realms. The stoic but rage-filled Kratos keeps his troubled past as a divine being secret from Atreus, as the duo come into conflict with gods of the Norse world.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind) serves as series showrunner, writer, and executive producer on God of War. TV veteran Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, Fallout) is reportedly directing the first two episodes of the action-adventure series, which is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

God of War is slated to arrive on Prime Video in 2027.
