Voltron fans are in for disappointment as Amazon MGM’s live-action adaptation is reportedly skipping theaters entirely. According to reports following Amazon’s upfront presentation, the Voltron film is now expected to debut exclusively on Prime Video, according to DiscussingFilm.

Reportedly in development since 2005 and passed around multiple studios before landing with Amazon, the project marks the latest attempt to revive the classic mecha franchise, which debuted in 1984, for live-action audiences. Amazon and director Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) assembled a star-studded cast, including Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, and Rita Ora.

Although Amazon confirmed the film as a streaming-exclusive title during its upfront presentation, the company has not yet announced an official release date. Either way, this doesn't come as a huge surprise. Other Amazon MGM blockbusters like Red One and Roadhouse made their debuts on Prime Video. Then again, after the theatrical success of Project Hail Mary, it seems likely that this large-scale sci-fi epic with giant robot battles would also premiere on the big screen.

Voltron will reportedly follow a group of teenagers pulled from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic conflict, where they become pilots of the franchise’s iconic robotic lions. As the war escalates across the galaxy, the group must learn how to fight together in order to form the legendary “Voltron,” the towering mech warrior at the center of the series. Henry Cavill is rumored to play King Alfor, the former ruler of Altea and one of the saga’s most important figures, while Sterling K. Brown is expected to portray the villainous Zarkon, Alfor’s longtime rival and the primary antagonist behind the galaxy-spanning war.

Overall, Amazon's Voltron movie remains a pretty big mystery. The company has yet to reveal a single shred of footage despite the fact that filming wrapped in 2025, which suggests a heavy reliance on CGI. And with a release date expected in 2027, we could be waiting a while longer.
