Following years of intense industry speculation, elusive leaks, and even a cancellation that has been rescinded, Panache Digital Games has taken the stage at Summer Game Fest 2026 showcase for a few minutes to officially re-reveal 1666: Amsterdam, a new first-person horror game.
This highly anticipated title serves as the next ambitious project from the independent developer under the creative direction of Patrice Désilets, famously known as the visionary creator behind the iconic Assassin’s Creed franchise and the unique survival experience Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.

A Grim Historical Reality Met With Occult Forces
During the showcase, a chilling cinematic trailer for 1666: Amsterdam was revealed, proving that the experience will lean heavily into a macabre, narrative-driven tone (just as we all expected!). The footage transports players into a hauntingly dark reimagining of the Dutch capital during the height of the Golden Age, a city where hidden occult forces have quietly shaped the destiny of its citizens since ancient times, and it is curiously filled with mysterious black cats.

In a surprise drop that immediately spiked community hype, the studio announced that the game’s official prologue is available to play for free on PC right now via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Also, the full title is scheduled to enter Early Access on these PC platforms later this year, with console versions planned for a subsequent date. This allows players to get a taste of this dark universe ahead of its full release, and I’m definitely taking it!
You can check out the full new trailer below:
In case you didn't know yet, at its core, the narrative of 1666: Amsterdam revolves around powerful, ancient entities known as The Originals. These beings have lived covertly among humans for centuries, offering immense wealth, power, and time to influential figures in exchange for profound, dark debts. Now, in the year 1666, those debts are finally coming due, triggering a catastrophic shift across the city.
With this setup, players assume the role of Noa Brooklyn, a young protagonist known as The Collector, who has been raised by a secretive faction and now must fulfill a grim cosmic purpose she never truly chose for herself, offering all the drama that this macabre setting deserves.
And things get even more complex from there. The game will also submerge players into multiple interconnected timelines, causing the core gameplay to weave between events occurring across four distinct eras: 1333, 1666, 1999, and the modern day. That way, each historic epoch presents fragments of a much larger, overarching truth regarding the foundation of Amsterdam and the lingering influence of the dark contracts sealed in the past.
It is worth remembering that the journey of 1666: Amsterdam is just as tumultuous as its plot. Originally conceived over a decade ago, the IP became the center of a historic legal battle, leading many to believe the project was permanently shelved and doomed to remain a lost piece of development history. Its sudden revival not only marks a triumphant return for the creator but also realizes a dark, historical vision that fans have been dying to see for years. So yeah, I would say we are pretty lucky it was rescued from limbo and that we even have a fresh prologue to play!
