Assassin's Creed projects Hexe and Invictus teased in big franchise update
Image: UbisoftIn addition to looking backward at the Assassin's Creed franchise by remaking Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Ubisoft is also looking toward the future for its historical action-adventure franchise. That future includes a new "darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience," a new PvP multiplayer game, and the return of cooperative multiplayer, according to franchise head of content Jean Guesdon.
On Wednesday, Guesdon addressed multiple reports and rumors about the Assassin's Creed franchise, including that he's now the creative director on Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe, taking over for the outgoing Clint Hocking. Codename Hexe was announced in 2022 at Ubisoft Forward as a "different approach to innovate in terms of gameplay." Guesdon teased Hexe further, saying that players should "expect a unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history."
"We are taking the time to deliver on its ambitious vision, which means we’ll be quiet for a while longer," Guesdon said, "but we love seeing all the enthusiasm happening on our channels and can’t wait to unveil more when the time is right." Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal.
Guesdon also addressed the Assassin's Creed project known as Codename Invictus, which is a PvP multiplayer experience being developed by "a dedicated team of For Honor veterans."
"We understand there’s a lot of curiosity around this project: yes, it’s a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise, but it isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested," Guesdon said. "With player feedback at the heart of our approach, we’re exploring ways to bring the community in earlier so we can shape the experience together. The team is incredibly passionate about what they’re building, and their work reflects our broader goal of offering a wider variety of experiences within the Assassin’s Creed universe."
The rumors that Guesdon references may refer to an unconfirmed report that Invictus will be a "Fall Guys version of Assassin's Creed," described by a streamer as a "kinda 'funny' game with Fortnite-style graphics."
In addition to Hexe and Invictus, Guesdon confirms that Assassin's Creed Jade, is still in development, as is the return of co-op in Assassin's Creed. Guesdon also references the cancellation of an early-in-development project and that "the lessons from that work are already helping shape our approach going forward."
Assassin's Creed fans will hear from the teams next on March 20, during an update — that seems mostly focused on Assassin's Creed Shadows — on the Ubisoft Twitch channel, starting at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT.
