Backpack Dungeon is a unique pixel-art backpack management roguelike. Your backpack isn’t just storage—it’s your combat core.

Item placement, adjacency, and trigger mechanics determine your survival in the dungeon. A mental challenge of spatial planning and strategy. For anyone stuck on the grenade in the tutorial: it’s possible to accidentally place it in one of the two side slots, which are not the correct locations for it. To continue, simply click Start and begin the fight regardless. It isn’t a softlock or a hardlock. The developer could make its intended use clearer, but progression isn’t blocked. Backpack Dungeon is a lot of fun.

The inventory management mechanics offer a unique twist on the roguelike formula, making each run engaging and addictive. Considering the amount of content available for the price, it offers solid value. In terms of content, Backpack Dungeon is a fairly standard backpack roguelike. The items and relics are interesting, allowing for a variety of creative and enjoyable builds. However, that’s also where many of its strengths end. The roguelike progression systems are fairly limited and require a significant amount of grinding.

The challenge modes and ascension system are functional but feel very conventional, lacking much variety. While there is meta-progression, it mostly consists of minor stat bonuses and starting relic unlocks. The design choice is understandable, but the available upgrade options could benefit from greater variety, as the current selection feels rather uninspired. Overall, it’s a great game with interesting item design, and the generous demo deserves praise for allowing access to most of the existing items while also letting players experience the ascension system before purchasing.
