Baki Hanma is back, and he’s stepping into yet another time-bending showdown that pushes this fighting anime to new levels of insanity in Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai. The new series arrives on Netflix on Feb. 26.
After the end of his brutal battle with his father, Yujiro Hanma, Baki and the rest of the legendary fighters find themselves strangely restless. They already fought a caveman ripped from prehistory, a monster strong enough to overpower dinosaurs, so the bar for excitement is pretty high. For a while, nothing seems capable of topping their encounter with Pickle the caveman. Then a secret plan begins to take shape 364 meters beneath Tokyo Skytree: the resurrection of Japan’s greatest swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi.
Yes, that Musashi. The undefeated samurai from the 1600s, famous for his twin-blade style and his legendary 62 duels. As warriors like Doppo Orochi, Jack Hanma, and Kaoru Hanayama prepare to reenter the fray, Baki does the same. It’s not every day you get to prove your mettle against one of the most renowned warriors in history, after all.
What follows is an unprecedented collision between eras. Baki, the strongest underground fighter alive, faces off against Miyamoto Musashi, the ultimate master of the sword. The result is a mixed martial arts battle that literally crosses time and space. Will the mastery of modern martial arts equal the deadly prowess of a man who reached the pinnacle in a world of war and violence? Baki and the other fighters may not like the answer to that question.
Baki-Dou is based on the manga of the same name by Keisuke Itagaki, originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion from 2014 to 2018. The Baki franchise centers on Baki Hanma’s lifelong quest to surpass and defeat his father, Yujiro, the strongest man in the world, by relentlessly sharpening his martial arts skills and raw fighting power. While the fights are often grounded in real martial arts, the series often takes wild turns, as seen with the resurrection of Pickle the caveman first, and now with the return of the legendary samurai Musashi Miyamoto.
