Once upon a time, the Battle Royale genre took the world entirely by storm. The first one to really pop off mainsteam was PUBG: Battlegrounds, and the rest is history as studio after studio eventually tried to cash in on the hype.
While the genre as a whole has definitely ebbed and flowed in the years since, that doesn't mean that there isn't still a wildly healthy and thriving BR community out there still trying to fight and survive to come out on top round after round. What's also been cool to see is how the genre has continued to evolve into other genres that none of us would've seen coming eight or nine years ago.
With all of that said, here's a list of eight Battle Royale games that are still alive and kicking, and that you can waste away countless days playing endlessly until you wait for your next fix.
8 Super Animal Royale
What the Fluff?
Starting out with a bit of a wild one, Super Animal Royale is actually a wildly unique and creative spin on the Batte Royale formula. As opposed to many other gun-based games in the BR genre, SAR is a 2D, top-down affair, which makes it feel categorically different right from the jump.
Oh, and then there's also the fact that this is a game where cute, cuddly, woodland creatures are mowing each other down by the craziest of crazy weaponry you can imagine.
Super Animal Royale isn't slowing down any time soon either, as the Super Animal World expansion has also now launched, giving players tons of more activities to partake in before jumping into another round of the 64-player chaos.
7 PUBG: Battlegrounds
The OG for Many
There was a time that PUBG: Battlegrounds was really the only readily available Battle Royale game out there, and holy cow, did it have a moment. Originally only on PC and XBOX, this was a game I'd go out of my way to play at friends' houses since I was strictly gaming on PlayStation back in those days.
Of course, PUBG did finally make its way to the Sony platforms eventually, bringing this one to millions more players worldwide, and to even greater heights as a result. There was something truly special about fighting for your metaphorical chicken dinner back in 2017, and if you were there, you know how good it felt to earn that first one.
PUBG did eventually lose out long term to Fortnite in the battle of the first two mega-hit BR OGs, but that doesn't mean that PUBG is any less fun to play in 2026 if you're still keen. The loop is still great, and you can still get lost in it for days at a time. I mean, heck. It's still constantly a Top 10 game on Steam even if it doesn't always feel like it has the same buzz that it used to.
6 F-Zero 99
No Falcon Way
F-Zero 99 was on literally nobody's Bingo cards the year it came out, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still somehow amazing. Truth be told, despite being a Nintendo kid growing up, F-Zero never resonated much with me.
That all changed with 99, a fresh-feeling take on the Battle Royale genre that allowed us to race on classic F-Zero tracks, trying to survive long enough to make it to the next round of action. Deplete all your energy before finishing a race or place too poorly, and it was back to the garage for you.
Sure, in terms of mega-popularity, F-Zero 99 never caught on like some others on this list. But either way, it's a blast if you're willing to give it a shot.
5 Tetris 99
From Russia With Love
Much like F-Zero 99, I'm not sure anyone really could've predicted Tetris 99 either. Nintendo, however, was in an age of Battle Royale innovation, and they were gracious enough to gift us with another banger here, converting possibly the most iconic video game of all-time into the BR format.
As the name would imply, Tetris 99 is you versus 98 other Tetris players, fighting to stay alive till the very end. All the while (and if you're playing well enough), you can send garbage lines of bricks to your opponents in an attempt to sabotage them and gain the upper hand.
I'm aware that games like Tetris might not resonate quite as hard with the younger gamers of the current generation, but for us old heads out there, Tetris 99 is thoroughly addicting. Heck, I wasn't even the biggest Tetris fan in the world growing up myself. But once you hit a certain age, this will be the only BR game you want to play ever again.
4 Call Of Duty: Warzone
Gunplay is Still Great
Oh, Call of Duty. I'm not sure I can think of another franchise that's had higher highs and lower lows. But say whatever you want to about the current state of affairs in CoD-Land – Warzone is still a banger, and it always has been.
It's a hallmark of the franchise at this point that CoD has arguably the best-feeling guns in the FPS genre as a whole, so bringing that feeling to the Battle Royale space was the world's most obvious W in video game history.
Those that remember Warzone launching remember just how big of a moment it had. To this day, it's still many players' preferred way to experience Call of Duty, especially when you factor in that the recent mainline releases have been massive disappointments. All of that aside, Warzone is still a blast to play.
3 Fall Guys
The New Mean Bean Machine
I've always been a sucker for things like American Ninja Warrior, American Gladiators, Wipeout, and everything in between. That's why as soon as I saw Fall Guys revealed, I knew it was going to be something I'd get into.
Luckily, I wasn't alone, as this hyper-colorful, zany BR didn't take long at all to gain a ton of steam and become a long-term mainstay in the genre. Sure, we had to survive the launch period where the game ran like garbage, but now that it's far enough along in its lifecycle, Fall Guys is simply a joy to play.
It's great with friends too, making it a BR that you can sink hundreds of hours into as you survive crazy obstacle courses, grab tails, and try to remain the king of the mountain.
Squad Up
I know I'm not alone when I say that Titanfall 2 is my favorite pure FPS of all-time, which is why seeing creators Respawn were making their own version of the BR back in 2019 was incredibly intriguing. Now that it's here and such a mainstay in the genre, am I glad that this is what's continued to be supported over Titanfall? Well, no. But that doesn't take away from Apex being awesome in its own right.
Apex was unique back in the day for bringing squads to Battle Royale, and also for perfecting the ping system which made playing with others off mic as smooth as humanly possible. For those of us that don't love chatting with randos and don't always have a dedicated squad to run matches with, this was a dream come true.
Apex Legends continues on today as Respawn's bell cow, and for good reason. The only question now is if Highguard eventually takes the spot in the near future.
1 Fortnite
By Default
Was there ever any doubt? Fortnite is still, 100% the most replayable Battle Royale title on the market. Love it or hate it, those that get the loop and have been entirely sucked into the title will tell you that they really don't need any other video games to come out ever again.
The reason for this (aside from the perfected BR loop) is just how well-supported Fortnite has been for so long at this point. Even if you aren't a fan, it's hard not to tip your cap to Epic and acknowledge how much has gone into the dozens of game modes, the ever-changing map, and the hundreds of fever dream-like skins that have kept the game fresh for years and years.
My favorite Fortnite memory is hopping in a golf cart and driving around the racetrack for the entire match, refusing to engage in any combat whatsoever. This strategy was good enough to net me second place, which is a hilarious badge of honor I still wear to this day.
