Perhaps the most important choice you will make at the start of the game is what class you will begin your journey as. Will you choose to be a warrior who fights with spear and sword or perhaps a scholar who wields powerful spells?
Which of these classes is the best to start your journey with in Octopath Traveler 0? Let's break down which ones you should choose.
Be a Master Thief
As with previous games in the series, the Thief class can be a bit overpowered in the early game. In Octopath Traveler 0, this class allows you to use the special ability steal.
Steal is a strong ability that allows you to take items from enemies. When used against bosses, you can get powerful items at the beginning of the game that you wouldn't be able to get otherwise.
On top of this, most of the enemies in the game, especially the early game, are weak to swords or daggers, giving you a means of inflicting weak point damage.
To make the Thief class even more powerful, you get access to the SP and HP Thief abilities. These make you steal SP and HP from your opponents, making your character a force to be reckoned with.
Scholar Can Wipe Enemies
If you aren't a fan of melee combat, you can instead choose to be a Scholar. Scholars are powerful magic users who typically use elemental magic to damage enemies.

When it comes to your character, they will get access to fire, wind, and light magic. Thanks to elemental weaknesses, your character will typically be able to wipe out groups of enemies.
I use the Scholar class any time I want to farm enemies for experience. This is because the high-damage spells quickly dispatch enemy combatants, allowing you to get through fights fast.
Along with this, the Analyze ability allows you to uncover enemy weaknesses. This is invaluable even in the later games, as it becomes increasingly difficult to narrow down weaknesses.
Merchants Get Lots of Money
If you want a way to easily get money at the beginning of the game without working too hard, you should be a Merchant. Merchants are melee and ranged combatants that use a spear and a bow, and they also get some major passive buffs.
One of the biggest perks of being a Merchant is that you get access to skills that grant you additional JP, XP, and money from battles, allowing you to quickly level up in the early hours of the game.
Another major bonus of the Merchant class is that it has the ability Mystic Shot. This allows you to regain SP, which allows you to use more of your skills. You will also get access to some low-level magic, which will make quicker work of groups of enemies, similar to the Scholar but not as powerful.
