With Windrose being a survival game, you are going to be doing much more than simply crafting items like gunpowder and building a base. Instead, you will also need to focus on battling various foes on land and at sea, completing activities, and progressing a main and side missions.

As you explore and complete quests, your character will gain levels. These levels will allow you to place points in various stats and skills, making your character more powerful and helping you survive more easily.

Of course, you probably want to know what the best skills and talents to focus on in Windrose are. Let's break that down.

How to Level Up in Windrose

Windrose Level Up Screen

Before you gain any talents or stat points, you need to understand how to level up in Windrose. Most survival games give you experience each time you kill a creature, build a structure, or complete an important task. Windrose doesn't do this.

Instead, Windrose rewards you with experience points each time you complete a step of a quest, complete a full quest, or complete tasks at a point of interest.

Quests are fairly self-explanatory, as they guide you from one objective to the next, rewarding you for completing the objectives. Points of interest, on the other hand, are a bit more complicated.

Each point of interest on an island requires you to complete a number of tasks, find a number of items, or open a number of chests. This number is shown on the point of interest.

When you complete all the objectives at a point of interest, you will be rewarded with experience points. Most points of interest will give you 25 or 50 experience points, with some of them giving 100.

When you gain enough experience points, you will level up. This will reward you with some points to allocate to your stats, as well as some points to allocate to your talents.

Best Talents

Windrose Talent Wheel

There are various talents to choose from in Windrose, with the talent wheel having four different quadrants with talents to allocate points to.

  • Northern Quadrant — Focused on one-handed weapons.
  • Eastern Quadrant — Focused on crude damage and two-handed weapons.
  • Southern Quadrant — Focused on piercing damage and firearms.
  • Western Quadrant — Focused on stamina recovery and survival.

As you level up, you will be able to allocate points into the different quadrants of the talent wheel, with you having access to more talents as you spend more points in the same quadrant.

When it comes to selecting your talents, here are some that we highly recommend you take first, or as soon as you can, as they will help you with survival.

Talent

Ability

Reasoning

Marathon Runner

Grants additional stamina

Stamina can be a real killer in the earlier hours of Windrose, with your character running out fairly quickly. This will give you additional stamina, allowing you to perform more attacks and dodges.

Stitches and Rum

Gain increased healing effects

This talent increases the amount of healing you receive from potions. Healing is always a must, and this will help with your survivability.

Just a Flesh Wound

Increases damage resistance

You will commonly be attacked by more than one enemy. This talent, as well as being a great Monty Python reference, will increase your damage resistance, allowing you to survive more hits.

Too Angry to Die

Instantly restores 30% health when you receive a fatal blow

Too Angry to Die allows you to regain health instead of dying when you receive a fatal blow. While the cooldown for this ability is 16 minutes, it is still an amazing talent to have when dealing with groups of enemies or a boss.

Surgical Cuts

Increases your critical hit chance

Critical hit chance doesn't sound amazing, but it will matter greatly in the long run when you upgrade this skill multiple times. If you are a fan of one-handed weapons, this skill applies to any of them, even if they don't deal slashing damage, making it great for nearly any build.

Deadly Finale

Consecutive hits increase damage

Combat has a bit of a cycle to it, where you can hit an enemy around three to five times, block, and then repeat. Deadly Finale allows you to take advantage of that cycle, increasing your damage with each hit in that chain.

In addition to these skills, it is important to choose a skill that will increase the damage of the type of weapon you prefer to use. If you like rapiers and guns, you will want to increase your precision weapons, but you will want to increase two-handed weapon damage if you like that weapon type, and so forth. There are no talents currently that will help you with ship combat.
