And it couldn't be coming at a better time
Image: Artisan EntertainmentLionsgate announced today that the fourth Blair Witch film will release on Sept. 24, 2027. Tying in with a recent trend, the movie is being directed by yet another horror YouTuber-turned-feature-filmmaker, Dylan Clark. While details are scarce at the moment, it won’t be a remake of the original movie.
The sequel, which is a co-production between Lionsgate and Blumhouse, was originally announced in April 2024. Clark was confirmed as the director in April 2026, shortly before the Blumhouse-produced films Obsession and Backrooms stunned the box office by grossing hundreds of millions of dollars against relatively tiny budgets. In both cases, Gen Z drove ticket sales through word-of-mouth promotion and social media virality.
This pair of low-budget horror films has a lot in common with 1999’s The Blair Witch Project, which made almost $250 million on a budget under $1 million. The movie remains one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time, largely thanks to a viral marketing campaign that positioned its footage as genuine. There was an official website featuring missing-person posters, fake police reports, and fictionalized interviews. The campaign was so good that some viewers were duped into believing it was all real.
The original Blair Witch was followed up by several less successful sequels. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was released a year later to a much more tepid box office and critical response, and Adam Wingard’s YouTube-centric take from 2016 didn't fare much better. The series also spawned video games, books, comics, and more.
Dylan Clark has his work cut out for him. While the original Blair Witch rode the cultural zeitgeist thanks to its fear factor and found-footage setup, that trick only worked for the series once, at least so far. Clark has a busy schedule, having signed to adapt two of his short films for the big screen: he’s doing Portrait of God with Universal and Story Time with LD Entertainment.
As for other staff, the untitled fourth Blair Witch film will be written by Chris Thomas Devlin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2023). Blumhouse’s subsidiary Atomic Monster, which is coming off co-producing Backrooms, will co-produce alongside Lionsgate. The creators of the original film, Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale, will executive produce alongside original cast members Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams.
