One of the more memorable aspects of the Borderlands series is its bosses. There is no shortage of bosses found throughout the series, and Borderlands 4 has some of the toughest of them all.
There are over 40 bosses found throughout the base game and DLCs of Borderlands 4, giving you plenty of options for farming. Of course, not all of them will go down easily. Even with an overpowered build, some of these bosses can take you down quickly.
These bosses are typically avoided or rarely farmed, but they have some good loot if you are willing to put up with them. Here are some of the most difficult bosses in Borderlands 4.
10 Rippa Roadbirds
Dealing With Three Bosses
The Rippa Roadbirds are one of the bosses in the Carcadia Burn region of Kairos. More specifically, you will find this group of bosses in Saw's Clench — the Ripper Drill Site in the northern part of the Ruined Sumplands.
What makes this boss so difficult is that you need to fight three of them at one time: Baby Grunt, Lil' Grunt, and Gruntabulous Vork. Each of these bosses only appears after you have cleared the Ripper Drill Site, leaving you low on ammo and tired from the fight.
While they don't have crazy moves or anything, the Rippa Roadbirds are difficult to defeat for a few reasons. First, the number of enemies in the arena during the fight. Two, their constant movement makes them difficult to hit, and three, the fact that their smoke trails can basically one-hit-kill you if you linger in them for a moment.
9 Idolator Sol
Invulnerable
Idolator Sol is probably the first of the Timekeeper's Commanders that you will fight during the main story of Borderlands 4. He isn't one to be taken lightly, as his fight has plenty of mechanics in it that can take you down quickly.
For starters, he frequently spawns rods, with one of them having a solution attached to it that you must rip off and throw at the boss to make him vulnerable. If you don't hit him with the green canister, he will remain invulnerable throughout the fight.
Later in the fight, he calls in a lot of enemies to aid him. Along with this, he frequently alters the arena, making the need to utilize your dodge necessary for survival. Getting caught in his storm clouds basically means death.
8 Vile Lictor
So Many Hands
Depending on the order you wish to fight the commanders, you might end up fighting Vile Lictor first, and if so, you might be in trouble. Vile Lictor can be more annoying than Idolator Sol thanks to his many hands and attacks that make you look around the arena.
During his first phase, Lictor will spawn walls that you must avoid, as getting hit by them can push you off the map if you get hit by them enough. Along with this, you must attack specific locations to open him up for damage.

In his second phase, Lictor gains the ability to plant a massive bomb, and if you don't avoid it, you will be thrown out of the map and killed for your poor reaction time.
7 Skyspanner Kratch
Flying Enemies Are Annoying
Why are flying enemies always the worst? The Skyspanner Kratch is the boss you will fight in The Lambent Mines, and it can be annoying at any stage of the game. Not only is this boss tanky, but it loves to move, and its arena is annoying to traverse.
In the center of the arena, there is a location where you can fall that will kill your character, so it is best to avoid the center if you can help it. Along with this, the boss will consistently release balloon enemies that will explode if they hit you.
Thanks to these constant enemies, you will always need to take your eyes off the boss, and that is when other enemies or the boss will strike. There is no winning when it comes to this boss, and your attention will always be focused on something else.
6 Sludgemaw
Threshers Are Worse
Few things are worse than flying enemies, but somehow Threshers top them. Sludgemaw is a Thresher boss that loves to hide underground, making him one of the most annoying bosses to deal with.
He will constantly hide and then pop out of the ground to hit you before hiding again, avoiding your shots. This has made it, so players label Sludgemaw as one of the worst bosses in the game.
Admittedly, he might be easier to take down than some others on the list, but the constant game of hide and seek makes him more difficult to hit and deserving of a higher spot.
5 Shadowpelt
Invisibility
Invisibility will always be more annoying to deal with than any flying enemy, and Shadowpelt loves to be invisible. While Shadowpelt has its shield active, it will be invisible, allowing it to easily evade your attacks and maneuver around the arena.
Once its shield is gone, you will be able to see Shadowpelt, but it will continue to move, taking swipes at you before retreating around the cave. If you don't take it down fast enough, it will turn invisible again.
There are few bosses that are more annoying or difficult to deal with than Shadowpelt, and it is a boss that many would rather avoid.
4 Axemaul
The Axes
If you find it difficult to hit fast enemies, you will not like Axemaul. Being another beast-type boss, this enemy loves to run around the arena.
Axemaul is known for carrying around an axe that it will lob at you from a distance. Thanks to how small it is and how frequently the screen fills up with elemental effect bursts, this axe can be difficult to see coming.

Thanks to its constant moving and its ability to throw its axe, Axemaul can easily take you down if you aren't prepared to deal with it. I recommend having a fast character like Rafa.
3 Inceptus
Welcome to the Jungle
Admittedly, Inceptus is probably one of the coolest bosses in the entirety of Borderlands 4. Gearbox nailed the look of this vault guardian, but the team also nailed the difficulty.
Inceptus moves very fast, making its attacks difficult to avoid. Along with this, it has plenty of AOE attacks to deal with, and an invulnerability stage that makes it so you have to stay on the move in the air or die from corrosive liquid on the ground.
It takes a while to get this boss down, and if you aren't prepared, it will easily kill you in subsequent runs.
2 Timekeeper
The Final Boss
The Timekeeper is the final boss of Borderlands 4, and it shows how difficult he can be to kill. This boss has two stages, with the first being his standard Timekeeper form. This is the easy part, as he turns into a Primordial Guardian in his second phase.
During his second phase, the Timekeeper becomes much more difficult, being able to throw you around the arena with ease and dodge attacks with rapid movement.
One of the more annoying attacks the Timekeeper has is electrifying the ground, making it so you must traverse on floating obstacles that you turn using your grappling hook. Miss one, and it's game over.
1 Bloomreaper
The Invincible
Bloomreaper is the first of the invincible enemies Gearbox has added to Borderlands 4, and it is currently the most difficult boss in the game, for good reason. The boss has multiple mechanics to deal with, such as shooting crystals, dodging thorns, and maneuvering around platforms.
Destroying the crystals will allow you to damage the boss, but it will quickly retaliate by covering the entire arena in spikes, making it so you must utilize the other platforms below the arena.
By far the most annoying mechanic this boss has is the ability to throw you into oblivion, completely ending your run in the process. It's easy to say this boss is hated when Gearbox has even mentioned it.
