Black Ops and Black Ops 2 leaks fuel rumors of surprise remasters
Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 appear to be getting some sort of rerelease, based on new ratings from South Korea's game ratings board. New ratings for those games, which were originally released in 2010 and 2012, respectively, have appeared on Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee, but details on the dual releases are scant.
The ratings for Black Ops and Black Ops 2 at GRAC don't specify what platforms or new features these Call of Duty rereleases might bring to the originals. But the ratings appear to support rumors of Black Ops remasters being in development at Activision. According to one account of that unconfirmed rumor, the remasters will include multiplayer maps, some of which will be updated, and will be sold as a double pack and separately. The remasters are also said to be arriving on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2.
Activision hasn't announced plans to remaster the first two Black Ops games, but it has revisited a beloved Call of Duty entry once before with 2016's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, a high-gloss update to 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The most recent entry in the Black Ops sub-franchise is 2025's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Although the game remained a bestseller for Activision and Treyarch, its tepid reception forced the developers to rethink their approach to releasing future Call of Duty sequels.
Polygon has reached out to Activision for comment on the Black Ops games ratings and will update this story when the company responds.
With this year's Xbox Games Showcase just around the corner, we might not have to wait too long to see what these Black Ops ratings are for. Adding a couple classic, fan-favorite Call of Duty games would certainly be a good way to bolster Xbox's Game Pass offerings — we keep saying this — now that new entries in the franchise are no longer day-one offerings on Microsoft's subscription service.
Activision just announced a new Call of Duty game on Thursday, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which will be released on Oct. 23. Modern Warfare 4 is set in a "rapidly escalating global conflict centered on the Korean Peninsula," according to developer Infinity Ward. This year's Call of Duty will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Modern Warfare 4 will be the first COD on a Nintendo platform since 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U.
Polygon didn't exist when the first Call of Duty: Black Ops was released, but you can read our review of Black Ops 2 for a dose of nostalgia for that Xbox 360-era game.
