28 Years Later was always intended to be the first in a trilogy. Director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and writer Alex Garland (Civil War) shot their film back-to-back with its sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, written by Garland and directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels). But Sony didn’t initially approve a third movie, waiting to gauge the response to the first two films.
Deadline reports that Sony has made a call ahead of the Jan. 16, 2026 release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, approving a third film. Garland is currently working on a script and Boyle has said he’d like to return to direct the unnamed film. 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy, who reprises his role as the bicycle courier Jim in The Bone Temple, is also in talks to return to complete the trilogy.
Horror remains one of the few bright spots at the box office, and 28 Years Later has made $151 million worldwide since its June 20 premiere, starting with a strong $30 million opening. It was also a great film, with Boyle and Garland reinventing the zombie genre once again by fusing it with an intimate British family drama.
The Bone Temple continues the coming-of-age story as Spike (Alfie Williams) winds up part of a gang led by the twisted Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell of Sinners). The Jimmies terrorize other survivors, including Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), who may have a new ally in the alpha infected Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry). Early impressions of the film have been good, likely giving Sony the confidence to sign on to letting Garland complete his vision of post-apocalyptic England.
