Developed by Pearl Abyss, Crimson Desert is a single-player open-world action-adventure game that has officially finished development and will be launching on March 19th.

In Crimson Desert, your journey will take place on the continent of Pywel, where your faction, The Greymanes, has been ambushed by your sworn enemies, the Black Bears.

The members that were lucky enough to survive have been scattered across the continent, and it's your job to reunite them—but there's a lot of ground to cover.

Crimson Desert's Massive Open-World Launches March 19th

In a recent interview, Will Powers from Pearl Abyss gave insight into many aspects of Crimson Desert, including dungeons, combat, their new engine named BlackSpace, and the size of the world, which Powers says is, "At least twice as big as the open world, the playable area, of Skyrim. It's larger than the map of Red Dead Redemption 2."

I guess it's named Crimson Desert on account of the endless blood you'll spill.

The continent of Pywel will reportedly be full of outposts, castles, side content, and challenging boss battles scattered across the map, and your exploration will be made easier by your air transportation—dragons.

Successful open-world games require a good balance of scale and content to avoid giving players the feeling of an empty world, but Powers says Crimson Desert is right in the sweet spot. “Open-world games are about doing things, having activities, having distractions. So we wanted to create a world that's not only massive, but is also incredibly interactive."

Pearl Abyss has built a new engine name BlackSpace, which has been specifically designed for massive open world games, "UE5 is a great engine, but this engine was optimized for this scope and scale of game."

BlackSpace will bring hyper-realistic features to life, utilizing real-time lighting calculations, raytracing, GPU-based cloth and hair simulation, volumetric fog that reacts to every movement, and a day-and-night cycle with detailed atmospheric scattering.
