Matthew Mercer's Exandria is here to stay for a long time to come

When Critical Role's Campaign 3: Bells Hells concluded, it was quickly followed by news of major changes for the popular Dungeons & Dragons actual play show. Rather than being set in Exandria, the fantasy world lovingly crafted by co-founder and Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer, Campaign 4 would take place in the new setting of Aramán. It would also be led by a new DM — Dimension 20’s Brennan Lee Mulligan. The decision, while exciting, left some fans wondering whether it would be the end of adventures in Exandria for good.
In a recent video interview with Polygon, the cast and co-founders of Critical Role said that leaving Exandria behind is simply not in the cards.
“I can just tell you as someone who hasn't read every single page of every single book that Matt Mercer has made in Exandria, there’s just so much room for storytelling,” Travis Willingham, co-founder and chief executive officer of Critical Role, says.
Even skeptical fans can see ample evidence that Critical Role is eager to explore more of Exandria. Only in May this year did the cast and crew travel to Atlanta for their Bells Hells & the Maelstrom Kingdom live show, where the Bells Hells explored a previously undiscovered underwater setting within Exandria. What’s more, this was the first of five live shows on Critical Role’s Echoes of Exandria live tour — meaning there are plenty more tales in Exandria to come.
Yet even outside the realm of actual play, Critical Role’s focus hasn’t wavered from Exandria. The company continues to adapt its campaigns into animated shows such as The Legends of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein — with Bells Hells perhaps on the way if fans show up for it. The company has also partnered with AdHoc Studios to develop its own video game. While we don’t have full details on what to expect, we do know that it, too, is set in Exandria.

However, while Willingham reconfirmed that Critical Role’s main setting wouldn't be abandoned, he added that the company is still committed to exploring other worlds and storytellers.
“Exandria will be around for quite a while, but as we've seen with Campaign 4 and Aramán, with the amazing Brennan Lee Mulligan, there are other worlds and stories to be told as well.”
