Critical Role's Legend of Vox Machina teases season 4's tragic story

Vox Machina returns for its penultimate season in June

If you thought that the bloody war against the Chroma Conclave marked the end of Vox Machina's adventures, no one can blame you. After taking down an entire group of ancient, evil dragons powered by dark magic, it would be hard to find another challenge worthy of Exandria's most famous adventurers, right? Wrong. What about a god?

The Legend of Vox Machina, the acclaimed adaptation of Critical Role's first actual play Dungeons & Dragons campaign, will return to Prime Video on June 3. After a short teaser revealed back in March, we finally got the first full trailer for the penultimate season of the show. In the trailer, our heroes contend with "a vague portent of doom with little to no explanation," plus "death cultists and supernatural villains" — the usual dire-sounding stuff that's met with flippancy and foul-mouth retorts.

Longtime Critical Role fans know that there isn't a lot left of the campaign to adapt into the animated show, but rest assured that some emotional and surprising story bits are still to come. The first teaser gave us a glimpse at the final antagonist of the series, an ancient, powerful being known as the Whispered One (Google it at your peril!). However, that apocalyptic confrontation will happen in the final season, so season 4 will probably act as a bridge to set up the climactic conclusion of Vox Machina's story. As shown in the poster, Vax (Liam O'Brien) and his patron, the mysterious Raven Queen, will play an important role in this season.

Cast members and Critical Role founders Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham will all reprise their roles, with Wayne Brady joining the show as fan-favorite artificer extraordinaire, Taryon Darrington.

The Legend of Vox Machina brought the chaotic fun of Dungeons & Dragons to the attention of a vast audience. While the show understandably made some changes to the actual play campaign, it's still able to transmit the energy and passion that made Critical Role an entertainment phenomenon.
