It seems that Studio MDHR is ready to test our patience and reflexes once again! During the Summer Game Fest showcase on June 5, the acclaimed indie developer dropped a huge surprise by announcing that two separate Cuphead projects are currently in active development, proving that the franchise's gorgeous, hand-drawn universe is far from over.

A Mysterious Main Entry And A Retro Spin-off
The first big announcement confirmed that a brand-new main entry in the Cuphead series is officially on the way. However, Studio MDHR chose to keep their cards incredibly close to their chest, and the team unfortunately didn't share any specific details regarding whether this project is a direct sequel or a spin-off, leaving fans wondering if our beloved protagonists, Cuphead and Mugman, will return for another round of brutal boss battles.
But that wasn't the only surprise of the night. In a fascinating twist, the developers also revealed that a smaller team within the studio is working on something completely different for the franchise. And unlike the main mysterious project, this second title luckily came with an exclusive sneak peek for the audience.
The acclaimed indie developer dropped a huge surprise by announcing that two separate Cuphead projects are currently in active development.
Titled Mighty Cuphead Adventure, this second game is a platform shooter that somehow aims for an even more retro aesthetic than the original Cuphead. According to the team, the spin-off will lean heavily into classic arcade-style gameplay loops while maintaining the signature charm that made the series a global phenomenon. While it is currently in early development for modern consoles, the brief gameplay tease was more than enough to spike the community's hype levels.
You can check out the official announcement trailer below:
Juggling two projects at the same time is a bold and ambitious move for an indie studio known for its notoriously long and meticulous development cycles (only those who waited years for the DLC understand this feeling). Whether we are getting a true Cuphead 2 or an expansion of this cartoon universe, Studio MDHR just became one of the most exciting developers to watch after this year's Summer Game Fest! More details regarding release windows and gameplay loops will be shared when the time is right.
