Cyberpunk 2077 has hit a massive sales milestone, proving it has finally cast off the botched launch that severely damaged the franchise's reputation for years.
It's not hyperbole to say that Cyberpunk 2077 was the most anticipated video game of 2020, with fans eager to see what CD Projekt Red was cooking up after the masterpiece that was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Fans were stunned when the game was borderline unplayable on consoles, especially the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with what was arguably the buggiest launch in history.
Cyberpunk 2077: 10 Mods that Completely Change the Game
These mods will provide endless new content for any Cyberpunk 2077 enthusiast.
It turns out that video game fans are far more forgiving than people might give them credit for, as the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter/X account has announced that the game has sold 40 million copies to date, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.
Cyberpunk 2077 Has Outsold The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
The fact that Cyberpunk 2077 has shipped over 40 million units means it has outsold The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Elden Ring, and Pokemon Gold & Silver. Chances are, the game won't hit any more major sales milestones unless CD Projekt Red has some incredible PlayStation 6 or Project Helix version in the works.
While a ton of credit needs to go to the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 for fixing the game's issues, making the existing gameplay systems more fun, and creating the incredible Phantom Liberty DLC, the real reason people returned to Night City was because of Edgerunners. This amazing Netflix animated show showed what life on the sci-fi streets was really like.

CD Projekt Red isn't done with the Cyberpunk 2077 franchise just yet, as a new game known as Project Orion is also being developed, though most fans refer to it as Cyberpunk 2. No details about the story of Cyberpunk 2 have been revealed just yet. However, it'll be exciting to go on an adventure in Night City without being shackled to Johnny Silverhand and the inevitability of death.
There's also another season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners set to launch in Fall 2026. The next season will follow a new set of characters, with a former Runner named Weak adjusting to a life without cybernetics, while a Nomad named D is on a quest for revenge against the corporations If the new season of Edgerunners is even half as good as the first, then it's a shoo-in for one of the best shows of 2026.
The botched launch of the original Cyberpunk 2077 is often considered the biggest blunder in video game history. If CD Projekt Red had just held off for a year or two, then Cyberpunk 2077 could have launched to universal acclaim and widespread sales. Instead, the company rushed it out the door and was forced to issue refunds, thereby severely damaging its reputation.
Thankfully, Cyberpunk 2077 rose from the ashes and won back the crowd, with updates that made Night City one of the best locations in video game history, matching Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto settings. Hopefully, the future is bright for Night City, as there's more Cyberpunk 2077 content on the way, and there are still plenty of chances for it to be screwed up if it launches in a shoddy state.
