Deltarune Chapter 5 Is the Series' Most Popular Launch by Far

Toby Fox can finally consider himself a Big Shot, as Deltarune Chapter 5 has broken the series' player count record within the space of a single day.

Deltarune has had a strange release schedule. The first chapter was released back in 2018 as a free download, with Toby Fox intending to charge money for later releases. Those plans were temporarily shelved, as Chapter 2 was also given away for free, due to it launching during lockdown. It wasn't until 2025 that Toby Fox actually started charging money for Deltarune, with Chapters 3 & 4 as part of the same bundle, with the future releases being free downloads to those who purchased it.

Chapter 5 launched on June 24, 2026, and its early success proves that the legend of Deltarune is only growing, as the official Steam figures state that the game has shattered its player count record, hitting 291,816 within a day.

It bears mentioning that the new Deltatune player count figures only account for the Steam version of the game. Deltarune is also available on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch systems, which also have prominent audiences, meaning the player count is likely way higher.

Nintendo has been a huge supporter of Deltarune, giving the game time during Directs, with the most recent being the June 2026 event, which announced Chapter 5's release date. Thankfully, the Chapter 5 release isn't competing with the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, which happened back in 2025.

So, why has Chapter 5 seen such a massive influx of players? It helps that Deltarune has had a growing fanbase online, especially in the YouTube sphere. See, unlike Undertale, which launched as a finished product, Deltarune is episodic, meaning the game is only being released in chunks, making it harder to get invested. This is why it never developed a fan following to the same degree as Undertale, as there's still so much people don't know about the cast and story.

The Internet theory-crafting channels love Deltarune, however, especially with all the hints that are buried in the game's code, making it perfect fodder for videos. Tons of channels have been pushing Deltarune content over the past year, especially with Chapter 4 ending with a reveal that Chapter 5 is only a year away, meaning players wouldn't have to wait long for new information.

The question now is whether future releases will have similar player numbers, or whether Deltarune has hit its peak. Chapter 5 confirms that more episodes are on the way, with Toby Fox seemingly positive about Chapter 6 launching soon. Fans are expecting the series to hit at least seven chapters, though it's always possible that more could be released, along with prequel episodes.

Regardless, it's incredible to see Deltarune doing so well, especially considering Toby Fox and his team worked on the game for free for so long, not counting the merch sales made from its characters. Undertale was a game that took the world by storm, being a complete experience that was unaffected by fan response, yet Deltarune exists in a constantly evolving state, with a team that shapes it as it goes along.

Deltarune is a game that's being influenced by outside forces, as fan references and memes keep getting slipped into the story. With the fanbase growing, one has to wonder whether the final product will truly match Fox's original plans for the game, or whether his Deltarune will become an avatar of its own fanbase.
