Keeper and Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine Productions dropped a big surprise on Thursday at Xbox Developer Direct: a new multiplayer pottery party brawler called Kiln. In Kiln, players will throw clay to sculpt pots, plates, and jugs, then throw down in a competitive online multiplayer arena as they fight to quench the opposing team's kiln.

Kiln, Double Fine says, "celebrates both Creativity and Destruction: the pleasure that comes from both making beautiful things, and then smashing those things to smithereens." Players can build and customize pottery to make vessels big and small, a strategic decision that plays into battle. Will you sculpt tank-sized pots, or tiny, ninja-like saucers to shatter the enemy team's hopes?

Players can then express their creativity with a variety of glazes, handles, patterns, and even stickers — with more of those cosmetics considerations coming in future updates, Double Fine says.

According to Double Fine founder Tim Schafer, Kiln was born out of the developer's annual Amnesia Fortnight exercise, in which the studio explores creative new ideas that sometimes become actual games. Previous Amnesia Fortnight concepts that have graduated into full games include Costume Quest, Spacebase DF-9, and Headlander, while other ideas have become the inspiration for parts of games, such as Compton's Cookout in Psychonauts 2.

Kiln is launching sometime this spring, and will be available for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It will be available through Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, and with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
