It is hard to believe it has been an entire decade since anime fans last stepped into the shoes of a Time Patroller in the Xenoverse saga, but the long wait is finally nearing its end. And Bandai Namco just caught the entire gaming community off guard today by dropping a special showcase for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, coming with a glimpse at what lies ahead.

The highly anticipated sequel is officially locked in for a 2027 release window, and it is bringing a staggering amount of fresh story details, a brand-new futuristic setting, and our very first look at how the next generation of anime brawlers will actually play.

A New Shonen Journey in AGE 1000

According to the showcase, which is accompanied by a trailer packed with action and iconic characters from the franchise, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is set to take players all the way to AGE 1000, introducing a vibrant, completely reimagined version of West City.

Instead of just managing timelines from a hub, your custom protagonist will actually be living a double life, and the gameplay footage reveals that you will be balancing your time as a student at West City University while simultaneously answering the call to heroism. And iconic figures like Bulma and Gamma 1 will be right there to welcome you into the ranks of the legendary Great Saiya Squad, anchoring an expansive narrative that blends slice-of-life anime charm with cosmic showdowns – and a whole lot of nostalgia, of course.

Also, to help make this new era feel different from previous installments, Xenoverse 3 is introducing a fresh roster of original characters who will be making their grand debut in the franchise, such as Brett, Lilica, ROM, and Tap, who will be heavily woven into the narrative fabric of AGE 1000. These newcomers will help expand the lore, guiding your custom hero through a web of choices and battles that will shape the future of the universe, truly living up to the shonen spirit of the original Dragon Ball.

However, such a big world means nothing without a shiny combat to back it up, and that is exactly where the development team is putting its artillery.

The new gameplay showcases the series’ signature high-speed aerial mobility, lightning-fast dashes, and screen-clearing Ki blasts, but the real talking point right now is how the upcoming chapter wants to one-up previous titles from the franchise, especially Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. That's because, while Kakarot set quite a high standard for cinematic, narrative-driven single-player fights, Xenoverse 3 seems to be aiming to surpass that intensity by introducing more tactical mechanics to the battlefield.

Basically, the core of this mechanical leap rests on two game-changing features: Soul Assist and Soul Swap. The first mechanic allows you to call upon legendary Z-Fighters during the heat of battle to execute devastating, synchronized tag-team attacks – and this goes a step beyond standard support characters, blending your custom hero's moveset with the franchise's strongest warriors to create even more tactical combos.

If that isn't enough power for you, the Soul Swap mechanic takes things to a whole new level. This one allows players to temporarily channel the literal essence and souls of iconic fighters like Krillin, Piccolo, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Tien. So, activating a Soul Swap grants your protagonist some temporary stat boosts and lets you wield their signature skills mid-fight! It just adds an extra layer of strategic adaptation to one-up Kakarot battles, giving players the freedom to shift their fighting style on the fly to counter any cosmic threat.

Either way, we will have to wait just a little longer for a specific release date, as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is currently scheduled to arrive sometime in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam). Bandai Namco has promised to share plenty of new updates over the coming months, and I am definitely excited to see how this ambitious sequel continues to shape up.
