If you’re just a fan of JRPGs with no love or knowledge of SAO, you’ll probably end up not enjoying your time here, and your money is better spent elsewhere. If you’re still curious, I’d recommend trying the demo to see if it suits your playstyle in Echoes of Aincrad. If you’re a fan of SAO, especially the Aincrad Arc, this is more than likely everything you’ve wanted from the previous games and more. It’s a huge step up from Last Recollection in basically every way—combat, story, graphics, etc.

There’s also no fan service or romance from what has been shown in gameplay of Echoes of Aincrad and discussed by the developers and content creators. Instead, Echoes of Aincrad focuses on the adrenaline and trauma of being trapped inside a death game during its early stages and how that affects the players. That’s a massive win, as the excessive fan service in previous SAO games has been one of their biggest drawbacks. Another major improvement is that the main cast from the anime and light novels are essentially cameo characters this time around.

The story finally steps out of Kirito’s shadow and introduces an entirely new cast of characters. Overall, Echoes of Aincrad is really only recommended for SAO fans who want to explore more of the Aincrad lore or immerse themselves in the death game. The positives are that Echoes of Aincrad is fun, the combat is enjoyable, the skills feel satisfying, and the combo system is excellent. The world is beautiful, and the town feels lively. That’s where the praise starts to taper off, though.
