With one hand, CD Projekt Red gives fans The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt DLC, and with another, it takes away, as the developers have confirmed that there are no plans for DLC for The Witcher 4, nor any of its planned sequels.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received two incredible DLC expansions shortly after its launch, with Hearts of Stone pitting Geralt against one of his world's many equivalents to the Devil, and Blood and Wine, which sent him to fantasy France for fancy parties and drama. Most fans had assumed this was it for The Witcher: Wild Hunt, until May 2026, when CD Projekt Red announced the Songs of the Past DLC, launching in 2027.
The Witcher 3 Ups System Requirements Ahead of New DLC
A new Witcher 3 experience means it's time to make sure your PC has new(er) hardware.
Naturally, fans assumed that the upcoming The Witcher 4 would be next in line for the DLC treatment, but that's not on the cards. During the most recent CD Projekt Red earnings call, CDPR joint CEO Michał Nowakowski answered a question about new DLC. According to GamesRadar, he shot down the prospect of The Witcher 4 receiving expansions, in the same way The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt did.
There Are No Plans For Future Witcher DLC After Songs Of The Past
According to Nowakowski, "As you mentioned in the question, the plans are pretty ambitious. Specifically, it's to release three Witcher games within a six-year period. It would be difficult, to be very honest, for us to add an expansion to the upcoming trilogy. This is where we are here and now with this particular issue."
Obviously, there are some caveats with Nowakowski's statement. The intention seems to be that DLC is difficult right now, because the intention is for Ciri to star in her own trilogy of The Witcher games. There were eight years between the launch of The Witcher and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and CD Projekt Red is trying to shave two years off that number.
Naturally, fans assumed that the upcoming The Witcher 4 would be next in line for the DLC treatment, but that's not on the cards
CD Projekt Red had plenty of time to make DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, considering it was the final entry in the trilogy, with no plans to continue it, at least not then, especially as the company was shifting focus to Cyberpunk 2077. It also helped that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was massively more successful than its predecessors, so there was far more interest in more content.
Perhaps it's a mistake for CD Projekt Red to release three The Witcher games in such a short period of time. There's a good chance CD Projekt Red could oversaturate fans with content, especially as they have to win people back after the underwhelming fourth season of the TV show, with its finale not expected to win back the crowd.
If The Witcher 4 is a massive success, then there will be a strong incentive to get out DLC for it. Let's say The Witcher 5 gets delayed, or the team want to take time improving the tech for the PlayStation 6/Project Helix generation? If this leaves holes in CD Projekt Red's schedule, then The Witcher 4 DLC feels like a natural way to pad things out with new content. Indeed, that's what many fans think is the case with Songs of the Past.
It's disappointing to learn that there are no plans for The Witcher 4 DLC, but there's a strong chance that could change in the future. CD Projekt Red is struggling to get the base game out, so conversations about extra content could easily happen later on.
